Lord of Thrones: A Game of Rings is a crossover fanfic between Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings.

10 years after the death of the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit, the Dark Lord Sauron, having lost one of his Nazgûl in the battle at Dol Guldur, turns his eye to Westeros.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Adaptation Expansion: Sauron is worked into Daenerys' visions in the Houses of the Undying.
  • Agent Scully: Tywin is dismissive of Gandalf's warnings about the Ring worn by Stannis, and takes it for himself.
  • Ascended Extra: The Mouth of Sauron plays a much more substantial role in the plot as he corrupts Stannis with his promise of power accompanied by a Ring of Power.
  • Assassin Outclassin': Cersei sends a man to kill Gandalf in the street only for Gandalf to defeat him easily.
Gandalf: When you recover your senses, return to Cersei and tell her that if she truly wants to kill me, she will have to try quite a bit harder than that.
  • Been There, Shaped History: According to Gandalf, Elrond's foresight is the reason why the Targaryens left Valyria for Dragonstone.
  • But Now I Must Go: Gandalf leaves King's Landing after beating Stannis.
  • The Cynic: Elrond is skeptical of the usefulness of Gandalf's scheduled journey to Westeros, citing their corruption.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • A Nazgûl is killed by Saruman, which sets off the whole plot.
    • Stannis is captured after the Battle of the Blackwater and executed.
    • Walder Frey is stabbed by Robb at the Red Wedding.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Renly, who is incinerated by a ring-wielding Stannis.
  • Fat and Skinny: The two guards who accost Gandalf at the entrance to King's Landing are a fat man and lean man.
  • Fingore:
    • Gandalf beats a ruffian by striking him in the fingers with his staff.
    • Gandalf cuts off Stannis' fingers on the hand he wore the Ring on.
  • Flashback: To Gandalf's previous incursions in Westeros.
    • One in 266 AC in the Vale when he visited Jon Arryn.
    • One in 281 AC shortly before the Battle of the Trident.
  • Horrifying the Horror: Everything about the Ring given by the Mouth terrifies Melisandre. When she sees the Ring worn by Tywin Lannister, she completely gives up her plan to rescue Stannis.
  • Info Dump: Chapter 10 is an interlude that serves as exposition for how the religions of Westeros evolved from worship of Eru, the Valar, and Morgoth.
  • It Only Works Once: The dagger Saruman uses to kill a Nazgûl disintegrates, leaving only the hilt.
  • No-Sell: Melisandre attempts to use her shadow assassin on the Mouth of Sauron. He proves to be more powerful than anticipated as he strangles the shadow assassin.
  • Playing Both Sides: Gandalf was advising both sides of Robert's Rebellion, attempting to persuade the two sides to come to a truce. He does it again when Tywin shows up and heads to Riverrun.
  • Plot-Triggering Death: Saruman kills one of the Nazgûl, who leaves his Ring behind. The Mouth of Sauron takes the Ring and brings it to Westeros.
  • Religion of Evil: The Lord of Light is revealed to be an offshoot of the Morgoth-worshipping religion created by Sauron during the Second Age.
  • Ultimate Job Security: From the days of Aegon V, Gandalf holds a position on the Small Council that nobody can take away from him while the Seven Kingdoms last.
