Like Father, Like Daughter is an Original Flavor Star vs. the Forces of Evil fanfiction created by ADdude.

After spending 16 years in another dimension Marco is finding it a little hard to readjust to his life back on Earth. Then a few days later Hekapoo shows up at his doorstep with a daughter, their daughter! Needless to say, he’s going to have a lot more stuff to get used to.

This fic is AU, diverting from the end of Running with Scissors. Instead of Status Quo Is God the effects at the end of that episode linger. Namely the effects alluded to at the end where Marco feels out of place returning to Earth after 16 years from his viewpoint. It also has the added consequence of him having a child with Hekapoo in what some assumed to be an Offscreen Romance they shared.

  • Action Girl: Seraph, Marco’s daughter, shows the same proficiency in fighting as her father. Both Star and Pony Head remark on how it should be obvious considering her parents.
  • Adults Are Useless: Averted. Marco’s parents show concern over the recent changes in Marco’s attitudes and try to talk to him about it. Then, when his daughter shows up, they tell him they will be there to help him and show nothing but love and support for the two of them.
  • A Glitch in the Matrix: The Dream Eater’s victims can be awakened by this method. For example, Seraph being mentioned in dreams where she doesn't exist gets some people, like Janna, to question things, and Marco is able to reach Alphonso and Ferguson fairly easily because they’re dreaming of being a centaur again, which is a recurring dream for them.
  • All for Nothing: When Ford tries to defend himself by saying he was trying to kill Bill, Hekapoo reveals that the nightmare dimension he was in was unstable and would have eventually collapsed on him and killed him without his intervention.
  • Almighty Mom: Hekapoo is Seraph's mother and one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Though it’s strangely averted when all that power doesn’t let her raise her daughter in her own dimension.
  • Alternate Universe: One where Marco and Hekapoo had a child during his trial.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Hekapoo has never been certain what influence, if any, Glossaryk had on her coming into existence and developing sentience.
  • Amicable Exes: Although she breaks up with Marco after learning what happened with him and Hekapoo, Jackie at least tries to be this with him after getting more information, since although Marco and Hekapoo were not in any formal relationship and they aren’t together now, they still seem to get along. That said, it's rather strongly hinted that both are still drawn to each other (namely when Hekapoo is under the spell of truth serum).
  • Apocalypse How: Hekapoo causes a Class X4 in her dimension after evacuating it to get around how reality rejects Erebus being damaged in order to permanently destroy him.
  • Ascended Extra: Brittney gets significantly more focus in this story, even joining the group on an adventure.
  • Badass Family: Hekapoo is one of the strongest beings in the multiverse, Marco survived 16 years in another dimension and became a hardened warrior, and their daughter easily fought off several magical robots that Star and Pony head had having trouble fighting by herself. And that's not even getting into Seraph's "uncles", the rest of the Magical High Commission.
  • Bad Future: A time warp ends up depositing Marco and Hekapoo in one where, in the 16 years after their disappearance, Erebus found out that Glossaryk was missing, killed the rest of the Commission, along with everyone on Mewni who didn't manage to flee to other dimensions, including Moon and Star, then went on a further rampage across the Multiverse, even recruiting the Lich after killing Axolotl, Time Baby, and Grob Gob Glod Grod, setting Orgalorg loose on Earth, who nearly extinguishes the sun, among other horrors. And if that wasn't bad enough, the fritz continues to get worse, with Seraph being one of the few beings, if the only being, whose abilities aren't meaningfully affected.
  • Big "WHAT?!": The reaction from everyone when they find out Marco has a daughter.
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Hekapoo under the truth spell admits Marco at thirty is 'not small' and was 'amazing' when they slept together.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: The Imperya, being a Straw Vulcan race with a Lack of Empathy, honestly couldn't understand that they were causing pain by experimenting on magical beings to improve their technology and understanding of the universe, which is part of why they were sealed away instead of destroyed. When some of them escape their imprisonment and end up on Earth, having evolved into a Hive Mind race calling themselves The Collective, they see nothing wrong with subjecting people to Unwilling Roboticisation and eventual Brain Uploading to join the Hive Mind themselves, since (as the narration points out) Living Forever Is Awesome, so why would they bother asking for consent or consider that the humans might not want that? Same for using the magical beings in the group as unwilling power sources to make that happen.
  • Breather Episode: Chapter 29, "Only Time Will Tell", is a break from the high-stakes messes of the Dream Eater and the magic-eating lizard attacking Seraph, the main confluct being trying to understand why Marco is suddenly as physically old as he is in the Neverzone, and Seraph a baby, and the latter focuses more on her grandparents, Star, and their school friends gushing over how cute she is and playing with her.
  • Bullying a Dragon: OK, Marco underwent a 16 year-long quest, held off a coup that consisted of some of the multiverse's greatest warriors and has a kid with Hekapoo, one of the members of the Magic High Commission. Said kid also helped against the coup and is said to be incredibly powerful. So naturally, Heinous thinks the best option is to attack them, try to kidnap Seraph and insult Marco and Hekapoo’s affair right to Marco's face. Not the best idea in hindsight…
  • But I Can't Be Pregnant!: Hekapoo and Marco were both sure it wasn't possible to have a baby together, so when they do have a child together, they call her a miracle. Hekapoo thus didn't realize that she was pregnant until she went to the hospital and went into labor right then and there. Janna assumes that H-Poo was lying since Marco should have been careful enough to use contraceptives, though later chapters confirm that none of the rest of the MHC thought that it was possible either, and a room that forces everyone to only say the truth makes it clear that Hekapoo was being honest.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: Once Erebus finds out that Glossaryk is gone in chapter 30, his rampage makes things get dark fast.
  • Character Development: Marco has started to show more mature traits returning from Hekapoo’s dimension and more fatherly traits after meeting his daughter.
  • Children Raise You: Raising Seraph has caused Hekapoo to mature a bit.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: The Dream Eater is defeated via a Portal Cut variation of this, with Marco and Hekapoo creating so many portals around it that it creates a rift that tears the entity apart, ripping its substance across multiple realms.
  • Dream Stealer: The Dream Eater, which has laid waste to entire civilizations. It tries to make the excuse that it legitimately needs to feed, but Marco and Hekapoo point out that it didn't need to gorge itself as it did, and it enjoyed twisting dreams into nightmares.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Brittney might be a cliche Queen Bee stereotype and admits as much, but the moment she realizes that Seraph might physically be a teenager but it still mentally a little girl, Brittney can't bring herself to be mean to her anymore.
  • Explosive Breeder: When Hekapoo learns that Earth has around seven and a half billion humans on it, she directly compares humans to rabbits, wondering if they're the most fertile sentient race in the universe, and saying that she's no longer surprised that Marco got her pregnant.
  • Expy: There are a number of expy in the battle tournament arc.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: The Collective creates a sock puppet avatar after arriving on Earth, having chosen it based on scans of the internet, to make communication easier.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Discussed. It's pointed by Star that if she arrived in Hekapoo's dimension just a little sooner, she would have prevented Marco and H-Poo's night together that led to Seraph's conception.
  • Friends with Benefits: Marco and Hekapoo's relationship during the trial has traits of this, though Marco suggests that this isn't exactly what they are, saying it sounds too tawdry for what they had and asks his mother never to say that phrase again.
  • Gag Penis: Marco has one, or at least will have one by thirty as revealed by Hekapoo under a truth spell.
  • Generation Xerox: Oddly enough, Marco and Hekapoo’s daughter looks a lot like Angie, her grandmother.
  • Genius Loci: Hekapoo's true species, which was kept secret because they normally don't have free will, and while Hekapoo is her own "master", there are spells that could change that, which would cause a Death of Personality for her.
  • Heal It With Fire: Hekapoo can’t actually heal with her fire powers. What she can do however is use heat to help with blood circulation, preventing bruising, loosening up muscles, and causing the natural healing process to go just a little faster.
  • Heroic Bastard: Seraph was conceived from the sexual relations in Marco and Hekapoo's unique relationship.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Wukong made one in the Bad Future to get everyone out of his dimension when Erebus came, the General made one to stop Orgalorg from destroying the sun, and the future Seraph makes one to allow her parents to return and Set Right What Once Went Wrong.
    • Hekapoo attempts one to defeat Erebus, setting her dimension to self-destruct to create a localized X4 Class Apocalypse How that will get around his ability to have space reject his injuries. Marco manages to save her, though, but since she was her realm's Genius Loci, it takes jumping through a few more hoops afterwards to keep her alive.
  • Hero Killer: Erebus has apparently killed the MHC several times. After he learns that Glossaryk is missing, he goes on a rampage in Mewni, killing Lekmet first, and finishing the chapter with killing Moon.
  • Humans Are Special:
    • Played for Laughs, when Hekapoo jokes about evacuating Earth to keep the Dream Eater contained, she learns that there are over 7.5 billion humans on Earth, which shocks her, causing her to exclaim that they must be the most fertile race in the universe and that it's no wonder that Marco managed to get her pregnant.
    • Erebus likes how humans are determined and passionate.
  • Hurl It into the Sun: Erebus has apparently suffered this at Glossaryk's hands.
  • Immortality: Hekapoo suffers from this. She knows full well this means she will outlive her daughter and is distressed by the fact.
  • Interspecies Romance: Marco, an ordinary human. Hekapoo, the all-powerful immortal magical ruler of her own dimension. They might not be together officially after Marco reverted back into a teen, but under a truth spell, Hekapoo all but bluntly admits she still feels strongly for him.
  • Is That Cute Kid Yours?: Marco publicly introduces Seraph as his daughter, so everyone at school understands that part. This trope comes into play when everyone assumes she's Star's daughter. Especially since Seraph has real horns that look similar to Star's fake ones; one student assumes Star gave them to Seraph as a "mom-gift."
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: When Hekapoo talks to Star about her feelings for Marco, she assures her that she has no intentions of getting in Star's way, because while Hekapoo does like Marco, her immortality means that he would grow old while she stays the same, and she feels that he deserves someone who would grow old with him. Star can tell that she's still sad about it despite giving her permission to ask Marco out, though.
  • Kids Play Matchmaker: Mabel and Seraph make a deal, Seraph helps Mabel pair up Dipper with Pacifica, and Mabel helps Seraph push her parents closer together.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Brittney's butler is the one who shows up for her meeting with the principal. Later Seraph all but spells out that none of Brittney's friends actually like her. They just enjoy the perks that having a rich friend bring.
  • Love Potion:
    • Zigzagged. When Marco and Hekapoo come back from her dimension after seconds away note  acting lovey-dovey and planning to get married, Star believes that Hekapoo put a love charm on Marco. She's half right. Marco is charmed… but so is Hekapoo. It's also noted that Marco and Hekapoo used health potions so even if they are charmed, there would be no way of making a distinction between the effects of the health potions and a love spell.
    • Averted with them both. It's not a love charm affecting them. Rather a parasite that causes the infected to feel great love for each other… before laying eggs in them and letting their babies eat their victims alive then spreading to those nearby.
  • Love Triangle: A potential one between Hekapoo, Marco, and Star.
  • Magic Eater: A type of lizard found in Hekapoo's dimension can absorb magic to grow larger, and seems to prefer magical creature as prey. One attacked Seraph when she was younger, leaving her with large scars on her stomach, and another appears at the high school after the Dream Eater attack.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Erebus was responsible for the Love Bugs and the Dream Eater escaping and coming to Earth.
  • Mundane Utility: When the Diazes, Hekapoo, and Star take a trip to Oregon, Rafael has the dimensional scissors used to travel there immediately and save on gas.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: When Hekapoo self-destructs her dimension to defeat Erebus, it and/or the prep for it is felt or detected throughout the multiverse.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • A lot of stuff seems to have happened in Marco's trial in Hekapoo's dimension.
    • Erebus mentions several, like Solaria bisecting him the long way and his previous encounters with Glossaryk and the Magic High Commission.
  • No OSHA Compliance: Quest Buy not only sells "Slaughter-nauts" and "Murder-Golems", but the sloth employees also leave them on inside the store.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Hekapoo decided to teach her daughter some basic math before she sent her to live on Earth. Turns out that you need a pretty advanced understanding of dimensional physics to use dimensional scissors, much less make them, so Seraph's "basic" math answers have to be sent to college professors for grading.
  • Not Me This Time: When Hekapoo realizes who Ford is and tries to arrest him, it's commented that for once it's not Stan who's in trouble with the law.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Janna claims that Hekapoo 'must' have lied to Marco about thinking he couldn't get her pregnant because there is no way that 'The Safe Kid' wouldn't have used protection before sleeping with his baby mama.
  • O.C. Stand-in: Seraph's design is heavily inspired by the unnamed Marcapoo daughter from a non-canon page in MoringMark’s ''Ship War AU'’ fan comic.
  • Older Than They Look: Discussed In-Universe. Moon admits to herself that she often forgets that Hekapoo is far older than her despite looking far younger.
  • Overnight Age-Up: Thanks to doing an errand for Omnitraxus regarding a time magic artifact, Marco is temporarily aged up to his Neverzone age while Seraph is reduced to an infant again.
  • Parental Neglect: Brittney's parents are apparently not around very often. When she fights with Seraph and gets in trouble, her butler shows up instead of her parents, who are apparently in Milan for an undetermined amount of time.
  • Perverted Drooling: Hekapoo starts doing this when she's telling her daughter about her and Marco's first date and reaches the part about the first time they slept together. Fortunately for Seraph, her mom stopped actually telling the story after she got to the part about their first kiss and started staring off into space.
  • Playing with Fire: Both Hekapoo and Seraph seem to have that fiery talent.
  • Portal Cut: The Dream Eater is defeated by opening so many portals around it that it creates a spatial rift that basically shreds it, ripping its essence across the dimensions the portals connected to. In the end, it was begging Marco and Hekapoo to hurry up and kill it.
  • Queen Bee: Deconstructed. Brittney thinks she is the queen bee of the school. However, Seraph is quick to point out that's not true. Nobody fears or respects her. She might be rich but there are other kids in the school with even greater wealth and status than her note , and unlike Brittney, they actually have real friends thanks to being more likable. Meanwhile, Brittney doesn't have anyone who actually likes her. Just people who enjoy the perks of her wealth such as her parties.
  • Rapid Aging: Seraph has physically aged to her teens while living in Hekapoo’s dimension, with only it being a month's time from her own perspective.

  • Recursive Fanfiction: Partially one of MoringMarks Ship War AU, as Seraph is an O.C. Stand-in based off of the non-canon Marcapoo daughter from one joke panel of the comic.
  • Scars Are Forever: Seraph was attacked by a magic-eating lizard when she was living in Hekapoo's dimension, and while Hekapoo rescued her and healed her, she still has the scar on her torso from where it tried to eat her.
  • Seers: An oracle appears in chapter 34.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Once Marco and Hekapoo arrive in the Bad Future, they become determined to go back and set things right. That version of Seraph even makes a Heroic Sacrifice so they can, rendering herself Ret-Gone in the process.
  • Sex God: Hekapoo is forced to admit via a truth spell that while he was an adult, Marco was 'amazing' in bed.
  • Ship Teasing: Played with but continually subverted. Hekapoo and Marco are very close but not together, and she claims that because of her immortality she can't be with him. Jackie understands Marco's perspective as to why he slept with Hekapoo but still breaks up with him and Star was smitten with him but hurt he had a kid with Hekapoo. However all of these girls 'still' want to be with Marco and nothing has been stated to be completely off the table yet.
  • Ship Tease: Hekapoo and Marco seem rather close despite not having any formal relationship. Flashbacks show that much to Angie’s relief her granddaughter was not born out of base lust but moments made by explicitly romantic feelings.
  • Shoot the Medic First: The trope is referenced directly when Erebus is on his rampage, right before he kills Lekmet.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Supernaturally Young Parent: Marco in a very odd case.
  • Super Powerful Genetics: Considering Seraph's parentage, it's not surprising that she inherited some of Hekapoo's Playing with Fire powers. What is, however, is that she also inherited the understanding of advanced math and physics that Hekapoo uses to craft dimensional scissors. To the point that Ms. Skullnick had to send the girls to work to scientists to get graded.
  • Surprise Pregnancy: Both Marco and Hekapoo are surprised at Hekapoo's pregnancy as neither thought it was possible for them to have a child together. Hekapoo even states that she didn't even know she was pregnant until she went to the hospital to find out why she felt 'sick,' only to find herself going into labor right when she arrived. Janna doesn’t buy Hekapoo’s story and insists she was lying about thinking Marco couldn't impregnate her, noting that a boy like him WOULD use protection. She later confronts Hekapoo about this when in a room that forces everyone to tell the truth, and it's revealed that Hekapoo was being honest.
  • Tell Me About My Father: Hekapoo spent a lot of the time she had with Seraph telling her about Marco.
  • There Are No Therapists:
    • Averted. Marco ends up talking to Mr. Candle on his parent’s insistence after 16 years of adventures and suddenly becoming a father.
    • Similarly, there's a long line out Mr. Candle's door after the Dream Eater incident.
  • Tournament Arc: The Battle Nexus Tournament.
  • Truth Serums: During the quest in Paris, half the group ends up in a room that forces people to tell the truth when they speak, and apparently keeps from just not speaking when asked a question, which Janna uses to confront Hekapoo about whether Seraph's conception was really an accident (it was). They can only leave when one of them says something deeply personal without being prompted, which Hekapoo does after Janna confronts her, talking about Seraph.
  • Uncanny Family Resemblance: Seraph looks a lot like her grandmother Angie.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Ruberiot's Song Day song clues Erebus into Glossaryk being missing, and since Glossaryk was the one being that he came close to fearing, he goes on a rampage that leaves most of Mewni destroyed and the inhabitants either dead or fled to other dimensions.
  • Weirdness Magnet: As in Gravity Falls canon, the town has a field that literally draws in weird things like a magnet, the weirder the being the stronger the effect. This is a big problem for Toffee when he rigs Mewni and Gravity Falls to collide; while by his dimension's standards he's not that odd the field works by what's weird on Earth, and thanks to everything he's done he's too weird to escape without a pair of dimensional scissors.
  • Woman Child: Seraph is a unique case, as despite physically being 14 she will sometimes act much younger. This is justified as she 'is' only about a month old, and didn't seem to grow up as fast mentally as she did physically. She is often shown to act like an overexcited child. She still has dolls and responds to moments where she believes she is in trouble like a small child would.
  • Wham Line: "We decided to get married."
  • When Dimensions Collide: This universe's version of the "Battle For Mewni" sequence has Toffee try to twist the knife further on Moon by destroying her kingdom... by creating a rift to cause it to collide with Gravity Falls.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Hekapoo has started to see the downsides to immortality with her daughter being mortal. Seraph's Rapid Aging in her dimension doesn't help matters.
  • Wizard Needs Food Badly: According to Hekapoo, magic comes with increased caloric requirements.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: After Janna gets her to try and summon a ghost, which ends up animating a spectral mammoth, Star has a minor breakdown over her latest screwup, thinking that all her mistakes will mean that she'll be a terrible godmother for Seraph and that it's only a matter of time before she screws up the girl as well, Jackie and Janna reassure her, pointing out that someone as safety-conscious as Marco wouldn't have made Star Seraph's godmother if he even thought that such a thing was possible.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: Seraph is forced to leave her mother's dimension for good because of her Rapid Aging issues.
