Kirby: Planet of the Cats is a Kirby fanfiction written by CVGW James. He wrote it sometime in 2019, taking down parts of the story while doing extensive editing, until finally, the story was finished in its complete form on July 7th, 2023.

After the events of Kirby's Adventure, Planet Popstar is visited by alien cats led by Prince Furrnutso, who need Kirby’s help in taking down a lion warrior who took over their planet. Naturally, Kirby agrees, and brings King Dedede, Meta Knight, and several Waddle Dees on his journey.

You can read the story on FanFiction.Net here, or on DeviantArt here.

Kirby: Planet of the Cats contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: King Dedede is referred to and portrayed as a benevolent ruler, with none of his greedy tendencies addressed (at least, not as any current issues). Justified, as the character has demonstrated more noble acts as the series progressed anyway.
  • The Atoner: Toneygus offers to clean up the mess he caused while he was possessed by Shadow Matter, even though he technically wasn't in control of his actions.
  • Big Bad: The story’s antagonist is Doofustacar Barkleyastum Toneygus, a lion warrior who took over the planet and is trying to turn it into a corrupted world of evil. Subverted in that he’s a puppet for Shadow Matter, the story’s true villain. Toneygus himself is actually a nice guy.
  • Fusion Dance: The Star Rod from Kirby’s world is fused with the Magic Fur Rod from the cats’ planet in Chapter 3.
  • Good All Along: Not only is Toneygus not the true villain, he’s actually a nice guy once he’s freed of Shadow Matter’s possession.
  • Original Generation:
    • Dream Land is said to have rival nations (Jurdastine, Haydesium and Woodsland), but none of them appear in any games, main series or spinoffs.
    • The titular cat planet and its inhabitants don’t make any appearances in the Kirby franchise either.
  • Jumped at the Call: Kirby and Dedede wholeheartedly agree to help the cats in Chapter 2, appropriately titled “Accepting the Cat Prince’s Plea”.
  • Stealth Prequel: While the story taking place after Kirby's Adventure is no secret, Shadow Matter is clearly related to Dark Matter, the monstrous entity that made its debut in Kirby's Dream Land 2. Sure enough, after being defeated, it promises that its brethren will cause woe to Kirby in the future.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Kirby has been shown to speak here, unlike in the games, where he was more of a Heroic Mime, or the anime, where he was only learning to speak (being a baby).
  • We Will Meet Again: The final chapter features both a villainous and a non-villainous version of this.
    • After Shadow Matter is defeated, he says this to Kirby:
Shadow Matter: Curse you, Kirby! This is not the end, there is more of me out there! One day, my brethren will take their revenge and avenge my defeat and loss. Until then, YOU CAN HAVE YOUR THRONE BACK, PRINCE FURRNUTSO!
    • Following that, Toneygus thanks Kirby and friends for freeing him of his possession, and hopes to see them again someday.
