Note: This article assumes you have played Kid Icarus: Uprising. Therefore, all spoilers regarding the game's plot will be unmarked. You Have Been Warned.
Kid Icarus Uprising: The Novelization provides examples of:
- Actually Pretty Funny: Palutena's reaction to Pit asking Viridi if she wears foliage panties in Chapter 11. Viridi is less than amused.Pit: And, let me guess, you also wear foliage panties, right?
Viridi: Exactly! Hey!
Pit: Got you!
Viridi: Ew! Pervert!
Palutena: Now Pit, that wasn't very nice. But it was pretty funny.
Viridi: Yeah, real funny. Freak. - Adaptational Badass: Some characters in the story get this treatment, getting powers or traits that they did not display in the game:
- While she was already pretty strong in the game, Phosphora is much stronger in this fanfic, portrayed as a One-Woman Army and a Person of Mass Destruction who has a wider array of powers such as wind powers and a One-Winged Angel form strong enough to dominate Pit in their fight. Had it not been for his quick thinking, Pit would've been killed.
- Aurum Pyrrhon, a Stationary Boss in the game, can transform into a large, powerful mechanical dragon that would've nearly killed Pit had it not been for Dark Pit's Big Damn Heroes moment.
- The Chaos Kin is given a One-Winged Angel form in this fanfic as well.
- Adaptation Expansion: Though it follows the game's plotline closely, it adds in additional scenes and dialogue to further flesh out the story, such as giving Pyrrhon a Freudian Excuse as to why he tried to hijack the Aurum.
- Adaptational Intelligence: Pit himself. While he's far from a genius or a master tactician, he is much smarter than he is in the game, able to come up with good ideas on the fly. Also, he is a lot less reliant on Palutena's advice.
- Alas, Poor Villain: Though "villain" is pushing it, Pit takes having to kill the Chariot Master a lot harder than he did in the game, even crying for him.
- And This Is for...: Pit does this while whaling on the Chaos Kin in Chapter 21:Pit: This is for hurting Lady Palutena! This is for all the people you made me kill! This is for hurting Pittoo! And this... [pulls out the Daybreak Cannon] is for anything I missed!
- Ascended Extra: Some characters get more attention than they did in the game such as Dark Pit. One notable example is Phosphora, who is pretty much one of the main heroes. Chapter 4 also fleshes out the Great Reaper boss, naming him Cronus and giving him an Affably Evil personality.
- Audience? What Audience?: In Chapter 2, after opening the booby-trapped treasure box, Pit tells Magnus that he did it because the author made him do it. Magnus is completely clueless as to what he's talking about.
- Big Damn Heroes: In chapter 17, Dark Pit shows up just in time to help Pit defeat Aurum Pyrrhon.
- Bigger Is Better in Bed: This exchange between Pit and Hades in chapter 17:Pit: Seriously?! Why do bad guys always think Bigger Is Better?!
Hades: That's because, my dear Pit, bigger is better. Especially when you're dealing with the ladies, if you know what I mean.
Pit: Ugh, Hades, do I really look like I'm in the mood to hear about your sex life?! - Bloodier and Gorier: Than the game. For example, the opening of chapter 11 goes into detail about the violence the human soldiers are inflicting upon one another, including someone being beheaded complete with High-Pressure Blood.
- Brick Joke: In Chapter 11, Pit jokingly asks Viridi if she wears foliage panties, which she accidentally admits to. In Chapter 18, it's revealed that Viridi does wear foliage panties and threatens to slit Pit's throat if he told anyone about it.
- Curb-Stomp Battle:
- Pit and Phosphora's fight starts off even at first until she goes One-Winged Angel and proceeds to turn Pit into an angelic punching bag. Only his quick thinking managed to keep him from being barbecued.
- Likewise, the fight with Aurum Pyrrhon also starts off even until it goes One-Winged Angel and beats Pit unconscious. Only Dark Pit's timely rescue saves Pit from certain death.
- Curse Cut Short: Viridi during her little spat with Pyrrhon at the end of Ch 17.Viridi: Tree-hugger?! Come say that to my face, you flame-throwing piece of—
Palutena: Now, Viridi. I think Pyrrhon's learned his lesson, and his pride's been hurt enough. Now we can get back to eliminating the real enemy: The Underworld Army. - Darker and Edgier: Than the game. While the game has its share of dark moments, the fanfic has more mature moments such as the graphic detail given to the human war in Chapter 11 and Pit's recurring nightmares during the Chaos Kin arc.
- Dumb Blonde: Defied in Chapter 14:Phosphora: I may be blonde, but I'm far from dumb.
- Expecting Someone Taller: In Chapter 20, this is Pit's reaction to the image of the Chaos Kin Viridi shows him:Pit: That's it? I thought it would look more... imposing.
Viridi: Well, what were you expecting? An Eldritch Abomination so hideous you can't grasp its true form?
Pit: Something like that, yeah. - Foreshadowing: After defeating Aurum Pyrrhon in Chapter 17, Pit notices that Dark Pit has an identical burn mark to one he received during the fight, despite not having seen Dark Pit get wounded.
- Freudian Excuse: Pyrrhon is given one in chapter 17, after he hijacks the Aurum Brain:Pit: Why are you doing this?!
Pyrrhon: Why?! I'll tell you why! Everyone knows who Palutena is. Everyone knows who Viridi is. Everyone even knows who Hades is! But what about me, huh? Does anyone even recognize me? Anyone worship me? Anyone even acknowledge me?! No. Well, that's all about to change. Now it's Pyrrhon's time to shine! I'll make everyone remember me! Even if I've gotta carve my name into the very fabric of this planet! - Heel–Face Revolving Door: As lampshaded by Pit in Chapter 17, Dark Pit constantly shifts between helping Pit and trying to kill him.
- Humans Are the Real Monsters: In Chapter 23, Hades gives such a lecture to Pit:Hades: Poor Pit. Ever the idealist even when in the cosmic scheme of things, nothing you do has the least bit of significance. Even if you defeat me, so what? It's in human nature to go to war. And though you might be able to defeat me, you'll never be able to beat human nature. I merely gave them a reason to fight. They didn't have to listen to me. But, like I said, humans will fight for any damn reason. A dispute over territory, an assassination of a ruler, or just because they want to. Yet here you are, desperately trying to see the good in humanity. It'd be admirable if it wasn't so pathetic.
- Hyperspace Arsenal: Unlike in the game, Pit is able to swap between his different weapons on the fly thanks to Palutena. The only downside is that he can't use multiple weapons.
- I Just Want to Be Special: Pyrrhon's Freudian Excuse, as he states in his Motive Rant, is that he was fully aware of how he was considered an outcast among the Divine Pantheon and was never recognized by anyone. Thus, he decided to take control of the Aurum and use its massive fleet to finally get the recognition he thinks he deserved.
- In Your Nature to Destroy Yourselves: In Chapter 23, Hades outright tells Pit that all he did was give the humans a reason to go to war. As he states, it's in human nature to go to war for any reason, and while Pit may be able to defeat Hades, there's nothing he can do to stop human nature.
- Kill It with Water: In Chapter 14, Pit defeats Phosphora by blasting her with the Poseidon Cannon and shorting her out.
- Motive Rant: Pyrrhon gives one in Ch. 17 as shown above.
- Nightmare Sequence: Pit has several during the Chaos Kin arc.
- No Fourth Wall: Much like in the game.
- Not a Morning Person: Pit is described as usually being asleep at six in the morning in Chapter 15.
- Not in Front of the Kid/Think of the Censors!: On at least two different occasions, one of the characters (usually Pit) chastises the others for dropping F-bombs, because the kids might be reading the fic.
- Oh, My Gods!: Pit says this word-for-word when he sees the Aurum Islands in Chapter 15.
- One-Winged Angel:
- In Chapter 14, Phosphora assumes such a form, complete with blue skin, purple eyes, and Power Echoesnote , and proceeds to utterly spank Pit until he uses the Poseidon Cannon on her.
- In Chapter 17, Aurum Pyrrhon becomes a giant robotic dragon; it's only thanks to Dark Pit's timely intervention that Pit comes out alive.
- In Chapter 21, the Chaos Kin uses one of these to turn the tables on Pit and Dark Pit.
- Playing Possum: During his fight with the possessed Palutena in Chapter 20, Pit briefly does this to dupe the Chaos Kin into revealing itself, thus allowing him to fight it without fear of hurting Palutena.
- Psychic Powers: In Chapter 23, Palutena scans Dark Pit's mind (more specifically, his connection to Pit) to ascertain that Pit is inside Hades' body.
- Punch Catch: In Chapter 20, Pit pulls one off against Phosphora using his Brawler Claws, which are made of rubber to insulate against her electricity.
- Ruder and Cruder: Unlike the original game, the fanfic has some swear words. For example, the two soldiers that Pit saves in Chapter 11, Leo and Jack, get into a brawl about how joining the army led to their situation, insulting each other and one of them even gives the other the middle finger, to the point that Pit has to stop them from dropping more F-bombs. Pit himself uses some surprisingly strong language on occasion, such as in Chapter 20 when Viridi keeps interrupting him as he tries to talk with Palutena when he notices that she's not herself, and later tells Hades to go to hell after he made a joke about Pit killing Palutena.
- Shock Stick: Phosphora wields one in Chapter 14 that she created herself which can also separate itself into two smaller batons to electrocute opponents with. She can even fire Sword Beams from it.
- Unstoppable Rage: When the Chaos Kin goes One-Winged Angel and nearly kills Dark Pit. Pit goes absolutely livid and proceeds to beat the everloving crap out of it. Considering everything else the Chaos Kin had put him through, that was likely the final straw.
- Wave-Motion Gun: Pit uses the Daybreak Cannon to deal the final blow to the Chaos Kin in Chapter 21.
- Welcome to Hell: Viridi's word-for-word reaction when Pit enters the Chaos Vortex in Chapter 21.
- What the Hell, Hero?: In Chapter 13, Viridi chews out Arlon for letting Pit and Palutena destroy the Lunar Sanctum, pointing out that he could have gotten them to back off if he had just told them why the Sanctum was built in the first place.
- Xanatos Gambit: Hades' Evil Plan for the Wish Seed and the Phoenix in Chapter 10: if Pit slays the Phoenix, it'll kick-start a war between the human nations, but if he does nothing, the Phoenix will attack humanity. Either way, the death toll will serve Hades' plans. He even outright mentions TV Tropes and the trope itself while gloating about it.
