Anna, a fifteen-year-old from Hoenn, travels to the Cyberos region in search of a new adventure. She quickly finds it in the form of Soundwave, a cryptic teenager who devotes his waking hours to fighting Team Primeval. After a battle with said team, Anna manages to convince Soundwave to travel with her and the two set off to tackle Cyberos' gym challenge.

Inferior or Superior contains the following tropes:
- Adaptational Nonsapience: While the sapience of Soundwave's animal cassettes is continuity-dependent, Rumble and Frenzy are always depicted as intelligent Transformers who just happen to be small. The fic's version of Rumble is treated no differently than any other Pokemon and is just as articulate as one.
- A.I.-cronym: Delta Drome's town sign is equipped with a Robotic Affective Friend, or R.A.F., to act as a cheerful source of advice.
- Cyborg: Many of the Pokemon native to the Cyberos region have evolved to incorporate technology into their bodies.
- Fusion Dance: Professor Wheeljack's academic specialty is the study of Pokemon fusion. He rushes off at one point to witness the fusion of a Charizard and a Clawitzer.
- Gender Flip: Ravage is male in all iterations of Transformers canon he appears in. The fic's version refers to Ravage as "her" upon being sent into battle.
- Highly-Conspicuous Uniform: Team Primeval's grunts wear tailored suits and knight's helmets.
- Malicious Misnaming: While they're introducing themselves, Anna comments that Soundwave's name is weird. He responds by deliberately calling her "Annie" to rile her up.
- Mythology Gag:
- The R.A.F.note is named after Rafael Esquivel from Transformers: Prime.
- The professor's full name is Chris Latta Wheeljack; Latta was the voice actor of Wheeljack in the first Transformers cartoon.
- Oh, No... Not Again!: Knockout's response to Soundwave returning to the Pokemon Centre with a bite wound on his arm is to say "Oh not again!" and guess what's attacked him this time. Anna picks up on the "again" part and questions just how many times Soundwave has gotten bitten by Pokemon.
- Shout-Out: Two of the scientists working for Wheeljack are named Rick and Morty.
