Fanfic / I Thought This Was A Mystery Dungeon

Go To

A man suddenly finds himself in the body of Tyrunt in the Sinnoh region towards the beginning of the Diamond and Pearl anime. Sounds pretty standard. However this isn’t the typical Pokémon world, and our protagonist isn’t a typical Tyrunt. This story is a Pokémon self insert by Older-Than-Time on Sufficient Velocity.

Can be found here.

I Thought This Was A Mystery Dungeon contains examples of:

  • Accidental Hero: According to his in story Pokédex entry, the protagonist’s preference for eating Pinsir and Heracross (invasive species) has allowed the native population of insect Pokémon to make a rebound.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Dawn and Ash go their separate ways early on after the latter decides he can’t handle Tyrunt's carnivorous instincts. While they part on relatively good terms, there is still some slight antagonism between the two.
  • All There in the Manual: Background information in detailed in the informational "Dex" entries that the author occasionally posts.
  • Blood Knight: Tyrunt definitely qualifies as this. From professor exposition and what we see from other Dragon-types in the story, it seems to be a genetic trait.
  • Came Back Wrong: Its revealed that all pokemon revived from fossils are technically this due to how the revival process is set up. The process uses dna from modern pokemon to update the revived pokemon’s immune systems to modern bacteria and remove genes that heighten aggression, which allows them to survive in the modern wold and makes them safer for trainers to own, but at the cost of making them weaker than they were originally.
  • Conditioned to Accept Horror: Dawn is surprisingly comfortable around the gore from Tyrunt’s hunts. Apparently her mother's Glameow would kill birds that woke her up when she was a baby and bring her their corpses. One of the first indicators that something is wrong with Dawn after Alamos is that she gets sick at the sight of gore.
  • Darker and Edgier: This fic has a more realistic take on the Pokémon world, particularly where carnivorous diets are concerned.
  • Friend to Bugs: Inverted. Bug type Pokémon are Tyrunt's preferred food.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Team Magma seems to pulled one of these and become TM-Red. Surprisingly, this appears to be genuine. However, one of the admins mentions 'disposing' of Rocket and Plasma goons who tried to investigate their base of operations, leaving us to wonder whether going straight is just a front, or that TM-Red holds to Good Is Not Nice.
  • Heinz Hybrid: Tyrunt is genetically engineered as a composite species with elements of Flygon and Charizard DNA added to a Tyrantrum base, which affects his physical appearance and growth, as well as the moves he can learn. He's longer, faster, and more agile than a normal Tyrunt, but at the cost of some muscle bulk and durability.
  • Related in the Adaptation: While Dawn's father has never been brought up in canon, here her father is suspected to be Professor Sebastian, a Team Rocket scientist.
  • Retired Badass: Dawn's mother, Johanna Berlitz, was a famous Pokemon coordinator who held a six year victory streak in regional contests.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Ash comes off as one of these in this fic.
  • Shout-Out: At one point, a band called the Upstreet Lads is mentioned.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Stanley Dallas. Not only does he steal Tyrunt, a ten-foot-tall lizard with razor sharp teeth and a volatile temperament, but he genuinely seems to believe that possessing Tyrunt's Pokeball is enough to ensure his loyalty. Fortunately for him, Tyrunt has enough restraint to avoid killing him. He just gets his legs ripped off.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Tyrunt and Piplup have this dynamic. They both insult and occasionally threaten each other, but both share common ground in that they deeply care about Dawn.
  • Weirdness Magnet: A sidestory reveals that people who have been involved with legendary Pokémon become these. Maximillian Lang has made protecting those kind of people one of TM-Red's new missions.
  • Worldbuilding: The author has posted several informational posts expanding on various things that have been mentioned in the fic.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Our protagonist’s appearance gradually changes away from that of a typical Tyrunt. Justified in that he is revealed to be a composite resurrection with Flygon and Charizard DNA in addition to Tyrantrum DNA, with two of those Pokémon being capable of primordial reversion in the story.
