Go To

Uzumaki Naruto grew up with lofty goals, guts, and determination. Instincts of a born fighter made him grow; duty to his home drove him. As the battle lines begin to blur, he must find a way to reconcile all he's ever known with the man he hopes to become.

Hurricane Suite is an AU Naruto fanfic by Dr. Snakes MD following a different Naruto who isn’t the Kyuubi Jinchuuriki, as he learns about the worst parts of being a ninja and what he can do to change things.

Hurricane Suite contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Inverted. As Naruto isn’t the Kyuubi Jinchuuriki he didn’t suffer from the All of the Other Reindeer treatment and has no more angst than any other orphan. Played straight post-timeskip where he develops quite a lot of angst for different reasons.
  • Adaptational Badass: Nagato defeated Hanzo without injury and so has had the opportunity to train the abilities the Rinnegan gives him, to levels well beyond his canon self. Naruto outright asks him if there’s anything he can’t do and Nagato replies that he’s yet to find out.
    • Ino became Tsunade’s apprentice instead of Sakura and is able to use Tsunade’s Super-Strength technique.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Possibly with Nagato. He’s much less of a misanthropic nihilist and his plan to bring about peace is both reasonable and humane but there are hints he’s not quite as sane and sincere as he presents himself to Naruto. Akatsuki’s manipulations were the cause for the escalating tensions between Konoha and Iwa in the first place.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Sasuke didn’t defect to Orochimaru and hasn’t grown in strength as fast as a result. Naruto states that Sasuke at 18 years old still wouldn’t stand a chance against Itachi.
  • Age Lift: Naruto is a year older than his canon self and Konohamaru is aged up four years to replace Naruto as the Kyuubi Jinchuuriki.
  • A God I Am Not: Nagato tells Naruto that he isn’t a god and still a mortal, fallible man, even with the Rinnegan. He does still encourage the citizens of Ame to worship him as one, as people are more willing to obey the orders of what they think is a god.
  • Alternate Universe: The Third Shinobi World War lasted longer than in canon and didn’t end until several years after the Kyuubi attack. This is why Minato still kept Naruto a secret despite him still being around for the first year of his life.
  • An Ice Person: Naruto’s primary method of combat is ice techniques, which he perfected by training with Haku. Naruto’s method of controlling ice is different though. Rather than having Haku’s bloodline which creates ice by combining water and wind chakra, Naruto’s suiton affinity is so high he can freeze water and still manipulate it.
  • Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better: Sasuke and Itachi have exactly the same abilities and methods of fighting, with Itachi being better at all of them with the exception of Sasuke’s lightning techniques. Naruto tells Sasuke that his best chance against Itachi would be to develop strengths independent of his Sharingan to catch Itachi by surprise.
  • The Bait: Orochimaru is still after the sharingan, so Sasuke is assigned to Naruto’s team to tempt Orochimaru into fighting them, rather than just running away as he normally does.
  • Balance Between Good and Evil: A strong belief of the salamanders and something that Ibuse frequently tells Naruto about. He tells him that striving for peace is a noble goal, but that chaos and destruction is a part of nature and can’t ever truly be gotten rid of.
  • Better the Devil You Know: Itachi says exactly this in response to choosing to side with Obito or Nagato. He’s doesn’t believe that Nagato’s plan is any better than Obito’s and thinks he’d be more easily able to deal with the latter. Once Obito is dead and he gets a full explanation of what’s been going on, he seems to willingly join Nagato, but his true loyalties are still in question.
  • Blunt Metaphors Trauma: Subverted. Ibuse pretends that he can’t understand metaphors due to him being a salamander, but he actually just likes to annoy people by pretending to be obtuse.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Hayate can still be a ninja after the lung injuries he received from the Iwa kill squad but won’t ever advance further than special jonin, due to his new cough ruining his stealth capabilities.
    • Mai had to retire from being a ninja after a fight with a Kumo ninja in the chunin exams. She was caught in an electrified net and suffered severe nerve damage.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture: Naruto suffers this when he gets captured by Iwa shinobi. When they can’t manage to break him, they try sending in Roshi, who attempts to make Naruto talk by force-feeding him lava. That doesn’t work either.
  • Combat Medic: Daisuke fills this role on Naruto’s ANBU squad. He’s Sakura’s cousin and shares her talent for the field.
    • Haku manages to completely heal Naruto’s injuries from his torture, despite Naruto having holes melted through his digestive system.
    • Ino is officially assigned as the medic of Naruto’s Orochimaru hunting team.
  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: Naruto’s first solo black ops mission is to assassinate one of Kumo’s spies. He kills her in front of a large crowd of academy students and their parents, including the spy’s son.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Naruto’s combat test with Sasuke and Ino is incredibly one-sided. Neither of them manage to land a single hit on him that he doesn’t completely ignore.
  • Cycle of Revenge: Defied by Ibuse. He may have been Hanzo’s partner for decades and isn’t happy that Nagato killed him, but he understands that Hanzo had it coming and that the ninja world is violent enough already and he promises to keep giving Naruto his full support should he join Nagato.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Konan has emotional talks with Yahiko, when Nagato isn’t using him. She may do other things as well.
  • Deader than Dead: Nagato rips out and destroys Obito’s soul with the Human Path and erases it from existence.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Itachi admits that his plan to get killed by Sasuke wasn’t the best one he’s ever come up with, but he was both 13 years old and in an extremely bad place, mentally, at the time. He’s determined to stick to it though, as he believes his crimes are too severe to allow any other outcome.
  • Driven to Suicide: The son of the Kumo spy that Naruto assassinated killed himself a month later.
  • Due to the Dead: Naruto recovers Haku and Zabuza’s bodies from the swamp and buries them on a beach that was a secret place of the Seven Swordsmen, with Kubikiribocho as a marker.
  • Evil Former Friend: Naruto becomes friends with Mizuki after being promoted to chunin. Their friendship was genuine, but it wasn’t enough to stop Mizuki betraying Konoha and trying to kill Naruto when he caught him.
  • Fake Memories: Naruto hides his memories of Akatsuki and the reasons he returned to Konoha from the Yamanaka Mind Probe he’s subjected to upon his return by casting a genjutsu on himself and sealing the memories with fuinjutsu. He shows them an altered memory of Nagato finding him in Tea Country, with Nagato replaced by Itachi, warning him about Akatsuki.
  • Fiery Salamander: Honosuke, one of Naruto’s closest friends among the salamanders, specialises in fire jutsus.
  • Fog of Doom: Naruto frequently uses the Hiding in Mist technique and developed a chakra radar jutsu to let him sense other people while using it. His effectiveness with it greatly increases after creating a version of the jutsu that turns the mist pitch-black and getting training from Zabuza on how to best use it.
  • God Guise: Nagato pretends to be a god to inspire the people of Ame to help him achieve his goals and make sure peace continues after his death, since people are more likely to follow a god’s commandments than a dead man’s.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: Naruto defects from Konoha and joins the seemingly good Akatsuki.
    • Kiri is under Akatsuki’s control, so either Mei or a no-longer-brainwashed Yagura has allied with them.
  • Heroic BSoD: Haku goes nearly catatonic when Roshi kills Zabuza. Naruto just manages to move him out the way of Roshi’s next attack and talk him back into the fight.
  • Heroic RRoD: Naruto ends up hospitalised from damaging his chakra coils after kawarimi-ing one of his thrown kunai to finish the Iwa kill squad.
    • He’s hospitalised a second time after getting chakra poisoning from overdosing on soldier pills during the Sand-Sound invasion. It would have been a lot worse if he wasn’t an Uzumaki.
  • Humble Goal: Naruto never even considered becoming Hokage when he was young. He planned to just be a normal jonin and have a family, to stop his clan from dying with him.
  • Humble Hero: Naruto makes sure to keep himself as one of these to stop himself from developing the ego he had before failing the bell test. It’s later revealed that Sarutobi deliberately suppressed talk about Naruto so he wouldn’t realise how impressive his achievements were and keep himself grounded and eager to improve, as part of his stealth Hokage training.
  • Improbable Age: Naruto graduated from the academy at nine, became Konoha’s youngest chunin, by a considerable margin, at ten and became the youngest ANBU, since Itachi at twelve.
  • Insult of Endearment: Naruto and Ino nickname one another as bitch and douchebag. Naruto is rather embarrassed when he calls Ino that, when they meet again after the timeskip.
  • Jack of All Trades: This is what Naruto trains himself to be in the beginning, attempting to emulate Sarutobi who embodies what Naruto thinks a ninja should be. He later stops taking this path and becomes a suiton ninjutsu and genjutsu specialist.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The sadistic Iwa-nin responsible for Naruto’s torture decided he wanted Naruto to die painfully. Unfortunately for him, the method he chose was drowning and he got his throat slashed open.
  • The Leader: Raidou is in command of Naruto’s first long-term chunin squad and its strongest member. He doesn’t last long. A similar fate befalls Naruto’s ANBU captain, Housei and his Root captain in Kusa, though it takes more time for them.
    • When he returns to Konoha, Naruto is put in charge of a mission to capture Orochimaru so Konoha can learn what he knows about Akatsuki.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Sasuke regarding the real situation with Itachi. Naruto questions the wisdom of placing Sasuke on his team, given his own links to Itachi and the fact that the mission is acting on intelligence Itachi (supposedly) gave. Naruto relents once he learns how much easier Sasuke’s presence would make finding Orochimaru.
  • Making a Splash: Naruto’s elemental affinity is water here, rather than wind.
  • Master of Illusion: Genjutsu is one of Naruto’s greatest strengths and he acted as his ANBU squad’s illusion specialist. Itachi even tells Naruto that he’s never met a non-Uchiha who could counter his Sharingan as well as him.
  • Mentor Archetype: Ibuse the salamander patriarch taught Naruto a great deal about chakra and helped him through dealing with his trauma. Naruto frequently asks him for advice whenever he has doubts or doesn’t know what to do.
  • Miss Kitty: Shoko, the matron of the teahouse/brothel that Zabuza drags Naruto to.
  • Mole in Charge: This is Akatsuki’s plan to bring peace within the five Great Villages. By installing shinobi loyal to them or their goal of peace as the Kages, they can all coordinate to improve relations between the villages and work through disagreements peacefully. Naruto is acting as their agent in Konoha.
  • Mushroom Samba: According to Jiraiya, the oil the toads use for senjutsu training causes bigger trips than Wind Country mushrooms.
  • No Dead Body Poops: Averted. A Suna ninja Naruto decapitates voids his bowels soon after.
  • No Man Should Have This Power: Akatsuki is collecting the bijuu as both a smokescreen for their real goals and because jinchuuriki have been one of the biggest causes of conflict since their creation. Removing them from the equation makes achieving peace much easier.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Itachi tells Naruto this when they discuss their motivations and Itachi reveals the truth behind the Uchiha Massacre. Both are child prodigies who became missing-nin after they were recruited into black ops and ordered to commit atrocities at incredibly young ages. They developed pacifistic ideals after seeing the horrors of war and dedicated their lives to bringing about peace. Some differences are that where Itachi embraces The Needs of the Many, Naruto refuses kill anyone no matter the circumstances and where Itachi thinks he can only atone for his crimes by Sasuke killing him, Naruto never lost his will to live, even in his darkest moments and wants to atone by making the world a better place.
  • Positive Friend Influence: Naruto seeing why Haku fought, to protect people he cared about, despite him hating it, helped Naruto re-examine his own motivations for being a ninja and move past the naïve nationalism he developed in Konoha, becoming a kinder and more peaceful person in the process.
  • Power Fist: Naruto often encases his fist in ice when he engages in taijutsu.
  • Precocious Crush: Naruto had one on a teenage librarian named Mai, who was the first real friend he had when he was young.
  • Protectorate: Kusa and Taki both have this status with Konoha, helping Konoha’s interests in exchange for protection in the event of war. Thanks to Akatsuki’s manipulations, Kusa plans to break their treaty with Konoha and ally with Iwa in exchange for Iwa giving them one of their Jinchuuriki.
  • Rescue Romance: Ino develops an interest in Naruto after he saves her during the invasion. Not that she enjoyed the fact she needed saving. She wastes little time when she meets him again after he returns to Konoha.
  • Resigned to the Call: Naruto knows himself well enough to understand that he can’t stop being a ninja and he’d eventually find something that would make him start fighting again. He joins Akatsuki to fight for the right reasons on his own terms.
  • Retired Badass: Downplayed with Sarutobi. He concludes that he can no longer act as Hokage and steps down after the invasion but takes command of ANBU, after Orichimaru killed its previous commander, rather than stop being a ninja completely. Unfortunately, this had the consequence of ANBU not transferring their loyalty from Sarutobi to Tsunade, with many of them already having a low opinion of her after her defection.
    • Naruto’s ANBU squad-mate Hikari decided she’d had enough of fighting after her ANBU tour and decided to stay in Konoha and work for her clan rather than return to normal missions.
  • Scars Are Forever: Naruto has a large scar on his chest from where Roshi melted a hole in him.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!/I’m Badass: Normally abandoning Konoha the way Naruto did, would have him labelled a missing-nin and be sentenced to death. However, Naruto being such a powerful ninja and the Fourth Hokage’s son has Konoha be so glad to have him back that they’re not willing to do anything more than keep a close watch on him.
  • Sensor Character: Naruto senses chakra and people through infusing the water in the air with his chakra. It’s how he navigates through his hiding in the mist jutsu and gives him hyper-awareness of his surroundings when he fights.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Naruto post-timeskip. After the horrors he experienced in Grass Country he became a pacifistic hermit, constantly haunted by his memories. After reading his psych evaluation, Ino is astonished he’s being allowed back in the field.
  • Shout-Out: The chapter titles are also the titles of various other fanfics.
  • So Proud of You: Kakashi expresses this sentiment to the second and third time he meets Naruto when he sees how much he’s grown and how well he learned the lesson the bell test was supposed to teach him.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: Naruto never had many friends growing up and none who were his age until he met Haku. He’s usually rather awkward and unsure of himself when interacting with people casually.
  • Sole Survivor: Naruto is the only member of his team to get out of Kusa alive. Since nobody could claim otherwise, he decided to let Konoha think he hadn’t been an exception.
  • The Stoic: Naruto’s captain in Kusa due to her Root training. Even Zabuza thinks she’s too callous. The war eventually got to even her and Naruto once found her curled up and crying.
  • Summon Magic: Naruto signs the salamander contract, after they find his body in a river and nurse him back to health.
  • Survival Mantra: “X days. X+1 is better, though.” Referring to how long it’s been since Naruto last killed someone.
  • Taking the Bullet: Haku saves Naruto the same way he saved Zabuza in canon. Jumping out of an ice mirror to get between Naruto and Roshi’s lava-enhanced punch.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: After realising the pointlessness of the shinobi system and defecting from Konoha, Naruto vows to never kill anyone, ever again. He’s aware that he may not be able to keep his vow forever if he’s going to play his part in Akatsuki’s plan, but he has no intentions of breaking it even when going up against people like Orochimaru.
  • Time Skip: The first part of the story ends as Naruto enters the secret war in Kusa. It then moves on several years with Naruto living on a beach as a hermit.
  • There Are No Therapists: Averted. Naruto is assigned a therapist to help him work through trauma from the invasion. When he returns to Konoha, Naruto is ordered to attend sessions with Inoichi Yamanaka. Since Inoichi mind probed Naruto earlier to learn why he came back to Konoha, they’d normally assign a different person Naruto would find easier to trust but the details are too highly classified to justify involving more people.
  • Trust Password: Naruto’s squad in Kusa uses a complicated passphrase to identify Naruto when he meets them. Longer passphrases are used to more efficiently find imposters by making them unsure if they have the correct reply.
  • Villainous Rescue: While only villains from Naruto’s perspective, Itachi saves Naruto from being killed by Roshi and the historically, Ame-affiliated salamanders heal his wounds.
  • War Is Hell: Naruto came within a hair’s breadth of breaking completely due to his experiences in Kusa. The constant killing, stress and danger kept adding up and the fighting got so brutal that Naruto could barely remember what he was even doing it for. When it was over, he could barely sleep and had to have his sensing jutsu constantly up to convince himself he wasn’t about to be ambushed.
  • Weather Manipulation: Nagato learned how to control the weather after spending several months sitting in a cloud. He teaches Naruto how to create lightning the natural way by manipulating tiny ice crystals, to up Naruto’s combat potential while getting around his poor raiton affinity.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Itachi suspects that Orochimaru’s body-jacking technique leaves him extremely weakened, as Itachi is sure he wouldn’t have beaten Orochimaru so easily under normal circumstances.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Naruto is perfectly willing to fight women and won’t hold back against them, but he’s always hated having to do so.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Naruto’s captain in Kusa executes a pair native criminals who were used to test Naruto at the start of the mission, as they’d given the information they had on the country’s layout and served no further purpose and would no longer need paying.
    • Nagato decides that the time’s finally come to get rid of Obito shortly after he recruits Naruto. It goes quite smoothly.
