Hunters Human Hysterics
is a The Owl House fanfic written by Allpissondeck.
It is a series of short Slice of Life chapters revolving around Hunter adjusting to a new life in the Human Realm, free of the pressures that being the Golden Guard came with.
Hunters Human Hysterics contains examples of:
- Acquired Poison Immunity: As part of testing his potions with tiny amounts of the substance in them, Hunter has built up a tolerance to battery acid.
- Adaptation Expansion: The first chapter explains more about Hunter’s time as the Golden Guard.
- Bizarre Alien Biology: A Running Gag in this fic is Hunter’s biology as a Grimwalker factoring into how his body processes certain foods.
- Hunter trying Pepsi leads to him floating up to the ceiling for a few minutes.
- Inverted in one chapter. When Luz and Camila introduce the others to Taco Bell, all of them but Hunter get food poisoning as a result of their witch biology.
- When the Hexsquad bakes a cake, Hunter takes it out of the oven with his bare hands, and doesn’t even feel any pain.
- Much to the Hexsquad’s collective joy, Hunter purrs like a cat when he’s happy. A later chapter reveals he can be influenced by catnip.
- Hunter’s teeth are so strong that not only is he able to break a gobstopper with them, but even back in the Boiling Isles, he had a history of chewing metal, even chewing on Belos' gauntlets as a kid.
- Getting a Brain Freeze causes Hunter to pass out.
- After trying some lemonade, Hunter’s eyes start glowing later that night.
- Eating a single melatonin gummy causes him to sleep for over two days with minimal breathing.
- Bizarre Taste in Food: Downplayed. Hunter’s tastes aren’t exactly outlandish, but he’s been able to down things with relative ease, like cough-ee mixed with battery acid, ratworm tails, and Hawaiian pizza.
- Brain Freeze: Hunter gets one of these in one chapter, and passes out as a result.
- Clueless Chick-Magnet: In one chapter, a barista at a cat cafe shows signs of attraction to Hunter, and even when she gives him three free cookies, Hunter assumes that she was just being nice.
- Conditioned to Accept Horror:
- Hunter sees nothing wrong with eating MREs, and when he explains his past to Camila, it’s only because he says he isn’t used to the taste of stuff like empanadas. Of course, as soon as the others find out, they decide to help Hunter develop healthier eating habits.
- Back in the Boiling Isles, Hunter cleaned up a lot of gross things like blood, brain matter, some of Belos’ goo, and even organs, so he’s okay with cleaning up any vomit when the rest of the Hexsquad gets food poisoning.
- When someone had attempted to poison Hunter in the past by putting battery acid in his cough-ee, because he had built up a tolerance to the stuff (see Acquired Poison Immunity above), he actually enjoyed the way it tasted.
- Eating Contest: Hunter takes part in a hot wing eating contest for the cash prize of $600 to help Camila. He wins, but he gets very sick in the process.
- Fishing Episode: Chapter 23 is this.
- Forgot About Her Powers: When Hunter is floating in the air as a result of drinking Pepsi, once he falls down, he misses the couch the others tried to push over for him to fall on. Afterwards, Hunter points out that Amity could have used her Abomination magic to create something softer for him to fall on.
- Interquel: This fic takes place during the timeskip in “Thanks to Them”.
- Kids Raiding the Wine Cabinet: Back in the Boiling Isles, Hunter drank alcohol at social events or to dull the pain from injuries. He didn’t even know there was a non-alcoholic version of apple blood.
- Lemonade Stand Plot: Averted. The Hexsquad tries to start a lemonade stand, but Gus and Vee’s attempt at making the drink fails miserably.
- Must Have Caffeine: Camila and Hunter share a love of coffee. Even before he went to the Human Realm, Hunter enjoyed the Demon Realm equivalent, cough-ee.
- Pineapple Ruins Pizza: One chapter has Camila introduce the Hexsquad to Hawaiian pizza. While Willow, Amity, and Gus all hate the pizza, Hunter actually enjoys it, much to Camila’s joy and Luz’s disgust.
- Plot Allergy: Hunter has an allergic reaction to kidney beans in one chapter. Unlike the other chapters, Hunter's allergic reaction is not Played for Laughs.
- Shout-Out: In the first chapter, Amity explains that back at home, her dinners consisted of expensive food in small portions, much like this comic by MoringMark.
- Team Dad: Discussed in one chapter. While Hunter is sleeping for over two days thanks to a melatonin gummy, the rest of the Hexsquad think about how noticeable Hunter’s absence is, given the fact that he’s the oldest one of the group, and that he often serves as the voice of reason.
- Unaffected by Spice: As part of a prank by Luz, Hunter tries the One Chip Challenge covered with Carolina Reaper hot sauce, but surprisingly, he’s barely fazed by it, and even calls it sweet.
