Hopeless Devotion is a Danganronpa fanfic about Mikan Tsumiki getting into a relationship with Junko Enoshima. It mostly takes place during the time of the Despair Arc of Danganronpa 3 and is meant to be a canon divergence.

Note: The story works off of Last-Name Basis, so that is how characters will be addressed to remain consistent with the fic.

Spoilers for the franchise and the story will be unmarked.

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Saionji is making an active effort to be nicer to Tsumiki after their fight.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Mioda calls Tsumiki "Miki-chan."
    • With Enoshima's backward way of thinking, "Mucky-butt" would be this to Ikusaba.
  • Affluent Ascetic: Downplayed with Enoshima. She lives in a modest one-story house with some basic accommodation. Her bed, while vibrant and pink, is still nothing special as well as having to share her room with her sister. She also usually sleeps only in her underwear while having a bunch of fancy pajamas that she leaves unused in her dresser. During Tsumiki's first night with her, she only adds a tank top. She does mention that she has a limo and private jet as well as a home theater system in their living room though. And she puts a lot of thought into her appearance. While her appearance is rather flashy and expensive given her model life, her day-to-day lifestyle is rather plain.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Enoshima is this to Ikusaba. She is constantly putting her down, treating her like a servant, and generally mistreating her. Ikusaba seems to react to her sister's antics with a Seen It All attitude.
  • Apology Gift: Saionji, Koizumi, and Mioda pitch in to get Tsumiki a bag of medical supplies she wanted to make up for the fight that went on the night before. They say they had it planned for later, but Saionji suggested giving it to her now to make things up to her.
  • Attempted Rape: Tsumiki is saved from this by Ikusaba when three guys are approaching her to do it.
  • Bad Is Good and Good Is Bad: Enoshima's philosophy in life. She states that she thinks God is good because He allows us to experience suffering. And that's also why she hates Him because she thinks He uses it to bring people together, which she isn't a fan of. The reason Enoshima wants Tsumiki is that she finds her utterly repulsive and pathetic.
  • Butt-Monkey: Tsumiki is one played for drama. Her life has been nothing but people shitting on her. Even the one person who loves her only loves how pathetic she is.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Mioda sometimes makes lewd comments about her peers, but she generally means well.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After not being able to take Saionji's bullying, Tsumiki insults her back and then punches her in the face when things go too far.
  • First-Name Basis: The cast almost exclusively runs on a Last-Name Basis by the narration and other characters in this story, but there are exceptions.
    • Koizumi is the only one who refers to the others by their first names. Saionji returns the favor.
    • Sonia is the only character who is referred to by her first name, likely as the only one who isn't Japanese.
    • The Despair sisters refer to each other by their first names. Ikusaba calls her sister "Junko-chan," and Enoshima bases her sister's nickname on "Mukuro."
    • As part of the push for them to be closer, Enoshima makes this the case between her and Tsumiki.
  • Hate at First Sight: When Enoshima starts talking to Komaeda, she doesn't think much of him. Then he goes on one of his hope speeches and she immediately dislikes him.
  • Incest Subtext: The writer admitted that Ikusaba does have affection for Enoshima in that way, but its presence is limited to implications. There are several off-hand comments Enoshima makes to suggest that her sister is into her and that they've done things together that allude to this, and there is a moment where Ikusaba looks dreamily at her sister.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Saionji after she Took a Level in Kindness. She's still abrasive, but she's trying to improve and shed her jerk tendencies.
  • Living Lie Detector: Enoshima's true talent, SHSL Analyst, allows her to tell when people are lying.
  • Mood-Swinger: Enoshima's emotions will switch up on a dime without much reason.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Mioda lampshades an offscreen moment of this. Koizumi is usually very gentle with Saionji, but the argument with Tsumiki caused her to chew her out to the point that Saionji was crying. And Koizumi still persisted with chewing her out.
  • Promiscuity After Rape: It is implied that Tsumiki's sexual behavior is from the sexual abuse she endured, making her think that it's a common way to placate people.
  • Proud Beauty: Enoshima is very aware of her status as a beloved fashion model and is not afraid to brag about it. Oddly enough, she shows hints of having Big-Breast Pride and D-Cup Distress, but such contradictions are not uncommon for the character.
  • Rape as Backstory: There are hints that Tsumiki was sexually abused. The story opens with one such implication.
  • Resentful Guardian: Tsumiki's mother openly stated that she should have had her aborted.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: The scene of Tsumiki and Enoshima having sex for the first time is cut off just before they start doing anything heavy. It cuts back in the middle of the night while they're sleeping together.
  • Sleeps in the Nude: Downplayed with Tsumiki who usually sleeps in her underwear. Enoshima does the same thing, only adding a tank top to make Tsumiki comfortable for their first night together.
  • Talkative Loon: If you don't stop her, Enoshima will go on for hours talking about random subjects and jumping around at the slightest hint of an adjacent topic.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Saionji is doing her best to make it up to Tsumiki by improving her attitude and being a better person.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Considering that Enoshima is a famous and beloved fashion model, she does a good job of hiding the despair-obsessed maniac she really is. She's able to woo Tsumiki by appearing approachable, if still rather eccentric.
