Fanfic / Homecoming, 2026

Go To

Homecoming, 2026 is a Whateley Universe fanfic about the titular homecoming at Whateley Academy.

This fanfic provide examples of:

  • Artificial Intelligence: Mei Hartford has programmed a digital entity, presumably some kind of AI, as it talks, and is programmed by Mei Hartford, a Cyberpath. Mei Hartford has not been seen in canon, and given the existence of Artificial Intelligences in Generation 2, which is in the past of this fanfiction, the implication is that the unnamed entity is an artificial intelligence of some stripe:
The video feed on the projection screen [...] interrupted by a female figure appearing on the screen [...] began to speak [...] my programmer, Mei Hartford.
  • Brain Uploading:
Cyberpaths risk exhibiting Palm's Syndrome. Palm's Syndrome was named after doctor Able Palm and is signified by the attempt to transcend the mor(t)al realm into a cyber entity.
  • Fan-Created Offspring: Mei Hartford. She is presumably daughter of the canon Amelia Hartford and her apparent husband.
  • Hologram: An entity programmed by Mei Hartford manifested as a portrait on a video screen, "before stepping 'out' of the screen, leaving a static image behind. [and turning into a] [...] holographic figure[.]
  • Mad Bomber: As Energizers come in Electical, Pyrokinetic and Explosive variants, and Deidrick's syndrome is a mental illness, this trope is discussed with the phrase:
energizers have a risk of exhibiting Deidrick's syndrome[.]
  • Must Have Caffeine:
"Who would build a security system into their cooking station?"
"Someone who was concerned that someone would steal their pizza teleporter or coffee maker.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: In a Shout-Out to the "This. Is. Sparta!" line of 300:
    This! Is! Halloween!
  • Psycho Electro: As Energizers come in Electrical, Pyrokinetic and Explosive variants and Deidrick's syndrome is a mental illness, this trope is discussed with the phrase:
energizers have a risk of exhibiting Deidrick's syndrome[.]
  • Pyromaniac: As Energizers come in Electical, Pyrokinetic and Explosive variants and Deidrick's syndrome is a mental illness, this trope is discussed with the phrase:
energizers have a risk of exhibiting Deidrick's syndrome[.]
  • Shout-Out:
    • To Navi and her reminders in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time:
As additional students and visitors wandered through the culinary laboratory, a ball of light with wings flickered into existence over the shoulder of one of the school's shide students. The Virtual Assistant flitted in front of its master and began speaking. "Hey! Listen!"
"What is it Navi?" Came the expected response.
    • To the "This. Is. Sparta!" scene of 300:
After several long moments of silence, a jazzy tune sounded throughout the stadium and the lights snapped back on. The display screen was gone, it's place taken by a hemisphere shaped object, floating at about the height of the basketball hoops. Standing in the object was a student dressed like Marvin the Martin and twirling a parade marshal's baton. His voice boomed out across the stadium, "Ladies and Gentlemen. This! Is! Halloween! Are you ready to party?"
    • Skyball is conceptually a renamed version of Quidditch from Harry Potter.
    • Splatterball is a teenage version of Doc from The Whiteboard.
    • Gary (Waite)'s VI is one to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
    • Gateway of Destiny is to EVE Online what GEO, from the fanfic's source, the Whateley Universe, is to World of Warcraft. Basically an enhanced version of what we have.
  • Technopath: Cyberpaths, an alternate name for those with the power, are mentioned.
  • Title by Year: The 2026 in the title is the year of the Whateley Academy homecoming that the story's about.
  • Virtual Sidekick: Someone has created Navi of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as a Virtual Assistant to remind them of things:
[A] ball of light with wings flickered into existence over the shoulder of one of the school's shide students. The Virtual Assistant flitted in front of its master and began speaking. "Hey! Listen!"
