A dragon prince, awakened...A Princess, in love...A plot to overthrow the Equestrian diarchy and break the very foundations of equine society...And an embittered Sorcerer willing to go to any lengths to realize his vision for the future...
Ranma Saotome doesn't care about ANY of that. He's on the wrong world, in the wrong body, and fate seems as determined as ever to drive the world's mightiest martial artist to an early grave. As schemes come unraveled and dark magic tears Equestria apart, all he really wants is to figure out what happened to Japan and keep himself fed.
But, alas, he always seems to be in the wrong place at the right time...
This story contains examples of the following tropes:
- Apocalypse How: A planet-wide solar storm triggered by Gosunkugi's cult obliterated humanity and fauna alike during the story's prologue, sparing only Ranma as he had been unwittingly trapped in the MacGuffin Stone at the time. Discord liked the world too much to just see it die off, so after events ran their course he worked to reverse the storm's effects the best he could, eventually resulting in Equestria as we know it.
- A Pupil of Mine Until He Turned to Evil: Blood Rite's relation to Princess Celestia, as he had been a student of her School For Gifted Unicorns decades before the events of the story, and apparently one that she had some pride in.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Ranma's rap sheet as the stories progress has some fairly serious crimes listed on it, such as arson and assault. Whenever the list is brought up, it always finishes with "dine and dash".
- Artifact of Doom: The MacGuffin Stone. When attached to someone long enough, it absorbs the victim into itself and uses their energy as fuel. That isn't to say that they can't be freed if one knows how, though.
- Big Bad: Blood Rite during the first story. He's still at large during the second, but time will tell if he continues to serve this role.
- Combination Attack: With the aid of a procured magic ruby, Trixie can provide Ranma with the fire necessary to help fuel his Hiryu Shoten Ha.
- Curbstomp Battle: Most of the fights that Ranma gets involved in, with one example being the mother dragonspawn at Sweet Apple Acres.
- The Dragon: Swan Song, towards Blood Rite.
- Dragon with an Agenda: In true Ranma 1/2 fashion, Swan Song falls in love with Ranma after her Polymorph spell turns him into a pony. She still follows Blood Rite's orders the best she can, but they're not so high a priority. The emotional stress from being used and rejected by Ranma and fired from Rite's employ eventually causes her to snap and attempt to kill them both.
- Death or Glory Attack: While Swan Song is a mare of many talents, this is ultimately her specialty.
- Even Evil Has Standards: Swan Song, the Dragon to someone who seeks to permanently alter Equestria's status quo, has this opinion of Gosunkugi's desire to destroy Earth when Ranma tells her about him.
- "Facing the Bullets" One-Liner: Kamikazan has one when faced with the full fury of the Hiryu Shoten Ha:"All I wanted was a date..." note
- Fastball Special: Ranma gets Twilight and Rainbow Dash to use him as a projectile during his fight with Kamikazan in Taming.
- Healing Factor: Kamikazan has one of these, as noted by Blood Rite. Within hours after his battle with Ranma, broken scales were already being shed and teeth in the process of regrowing, when a typical dragon would take much longer to recover from those wounds.
- Last of His Kind: Ranma, after the aforementioned solar storm. He firmly believes that Gosunkugi transported him to another planet, remaining blissfully unaware of the truth for quite some time.
- MacGuffin: The MacGuffin Stone, natch. According to Discord, its purpose is to provide a reason for the plot's existence by being a source of conflict and driving a narrative.
- Not Good with Rejection: Whoa boy, Swan Song.
- Not Me This Time: This is Discord's immediate response when Twilight's attempts to use magic on Ranma end with Golden Oaks Library being decimated.
- Plot Allergy: Ranma has one towards magic. If spells are used on him, just about anything can happen—though the end result is an explosion or something detrimental more often than not. This is also how Swan Song's Polymorph spell managed to permanently turn him into a pony.
- Poor Communication Kills:
- If the ponies who had issued the bounty on "Havoc" had bothered to check and see how much truth was in the charges against him, much of the trouble he goes on to experience could have been avoided.
- The belief that Twilight was in league with "Havoc" led to General Granite and a decent chunk of the Equestrian military trying to capture them both, leading to a brawl that envelops Ponyville. It takes direct intervention from both Celestia and Luna before the situation is corralled.
- Running Gag:
- Characters wondering along the lines of "Is it seriously called that?" about the MacGuffin Stone.
- Buildings unintentionally being set aflame wherever Ranma goes.
- Magic doing anything to Ranma other than what was intended.
- Spider-Sense: Anyone who was ever trapped in the MacGuffin Stone or has used it long enough gains the ability to sense in what direction the Stone is located afterward. Recipients of this ability include Ranma, Blood Rite, and Twilight Sparkle.
- Underestimating Badassery: Protagonists, antagonists, and everyone in-between underestimate what Ranma is capable of. One by one, most of them end up regretting it.
- Villain Team-Up: Kamikazan and Blood Rite eventually join forces in Taming. The former wants Princess Celestia. The latter wants to break the bonds of destiny and deprive Celestia of her power. And they both would like nothing better than to see Ranma dead.
