Fanfic / Hermoine Granger And The Child Protection Movement

Go To

Hermoine Granger and the Child Protection Movement is a series of Harry Potter For Want Of A Nail fanfics in which Hermoine wrote to her parents during her first year about the signs she’d observed that her friend Harry had an abusive home life before coming to Hogwarts. Since the non-magical world has laws against such things, the Grangers decide to do what they can to ensure Harry doesn’t go back to the Dursleys at the end of the year.

This results in Harry being adopted by the Grangers and navigating his subsequent years at Hogwarts with the support of a loving family. In the process, Hermoine becomes aware of just how far behind the Wizarding world is compared to the Muggle world when it comes to having laws and procedures in place to protect children from mistreatment and abuse.

There are currently five installments:

Hermoine Granger and the Child Protection Movement contains examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: Lucius Malfoy and many of the other Death Eaters are abusive to their children.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Draco and many of the Slitherin students. Snape becomes a much more pleasant person.
  • Calling Parents by Their Name: Harry refers to Jean and George Granger by their first names initially, but over time gets used to calling them Mum and Dad.
  • Calling the Old Man Out:
    • Harry and the Grangers finally call out Dumbledore for his decisions in Revelations & Revolutions.
    • Neville also calls out his grandmother for trying to make him be his father instead of appreciating him for who he was.
  • Death by Adaptation: Dan Granger was alive and living in Australia at the end of the books. Here, he’s killed by Voldemort while trying to protect Harry.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of being killed by Snape at the end of Harry’s sixth year, here Dumbledore is killed by Voldemort when the Death Eaters attack Hogwarts.
  • Disney Death: Cedric returns from the third task announcing that Voldemort has returned and killed Harry. The following chapter immediately reveals that he survived.
  • Dead Person Conversation: Harry talks to his father when they meet after Voldemort’s killing curse destroys the horcrux inside Harry.
  • Death Faked for You: While Cedric publicly declaring that he saw Harry die from Voldemort’s killing curse was premature, Harry and the Grangers decide to take advantage of it and let the rest of the world (outside of their close friends and associates) continue to believe in Harry’s demise for a little while longer.
  • Friendly Rivalry: Draco and Harry’s initial rivalry from their first year develops into this as they get to know each other through the AA meetings, to the point where they only continue the rivalry in public to keep the existence of the group a secret, and with it, the fact that Harry is no longer living with his relatives.
  • Happily Adopted: Harry by the Grangers.
  • Muggles Do It Better: One of the main premises of this series is that this trope is in effect when it comes to laws against child abuse.
  • Parental Neglect: Xenophilius, due to his constant traveling to research magical creatures, doesn’t spend much time with Luna and often leaves her home alone.
  • Polyamory: Hermoine, Fred, and Victor all end up in a relationship with each other.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Neville’s grandmother tried to make him into one for his father.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Cedric Diggory, Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, and Severus Snape.
  • Tropaholics Anonymous: At the start of their second year, Harry and Hermoine form a support group for Hogwarts students living with neglectul or abusive families.
  • Trust Password: In Kinship and Peril, James instructs Harry to give Remus twenty galleons to pay off a bet about his first day at Hogwarts, which Harry would have no way of knowing about normally, in order to prove that his conversation with his father really happened and wasn’t a hallucination.
