Hermione Learns A Thing is a Harry Potter fanfiction story by mp3.1415player.

Hermione, a very bright young girl, is eternally curious about many things. When her frustration at a circuit board she was building shorting out causes it to jump across the room, she suddenly finds a new outlet for her curiosity.

It can be found on FF.net or on AO3.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: This goes both ways:
    • Hermione, not realizing that the cause of her telekinetic abilities is her accidental magic, discovers a way to focus and channel it, even without a wand, going so far as to uncover a new energy field where the power to achieve said feats comes from. She's even managed to allow her parents to develop telekinetic abilities as well, despite magic supposedly being genetic.
    • From what Hermione has managed to glean from the wizards she's come close enough to sense, they've seemingly avoided managing to tap into the H-Field proper, instead connecting to a separate but connected field, and while their wands are highly inefficient to Hermione's eyes, they let them do things with an incantation and wave that Hermione is still figuring out through complex experimentation, though she's a quick study of whatever she observes.
    • When Hermione captures the fear-eating Emotion Eater, something in itself an amazing feat that it itself assumed impossible, she causes a global drop in night terrors of 90%. The wizard method of using anti-ghost wards against it is also a case of this, as they only work because they annoy the creature so much it sticks largely to Muggle prey.
  • Adaptational Intelligence: Hermione was already frighteningly intelligent in canon sometimes. Here she's even more intelligent somehow, showing an interest in electronics before she even hits double digits in age. Her IQ is outright stated to be in the 180s, even if it is also noted at that high the exact number is irrelevant. Thankfully she is also rather emotionally mature for her age as well.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Hermione, being a brilliant girl in Britain, is obviously a huge fan of Stephen Hawking, and once what she can do starts getting full attention from academia she gets to meet him and even work with him.
  • Background Magic Field: Hermione discovers that the energy she's tapping into when moving things with telekinesis comes from something she calls the H-Field. It exists at a seemingly constant level everywhere Hermione can sense, with any increases or decreases from her activity quickly stabilizing.
  • Cast from Stamina: Moving objects with her powers strains Hermione significantly. To that end, she devises a way to put the strain entirely on the H-Field.
  • Child Prodigy: Hermione in a nutshell. She even manages to discover a way to control her accidental magic without a wand soon after learning about it, all without a wand.
  • Emotion Eater: The omake "It comes from the dark" deals with an ancient entity that eats fear, and causes a huge number of night terrors, though unlike its distant cousins the dementors it's not as obvious or ravenous, except on Halloween. Unfortunately for it, it makes the mistake of going after Hermione...
  • Failed a Spot Check: The wizards all so much...
    • For starters, they are completely blind to all the 'underage magic' which Hermione is performing on a daily basis.
    • One of the experiments at Oxford is interfering with the magical instruments meant to detect such magic, and thus preventing them from knowing what is going on there too.
    • Hermione realises that the wizards lack the ability to sense energy which she unlocked, which (among a number of things) prevents them from understanding just how inefficient their current spells are.
  • Magitech: Hermione soon discovers a way to manipulate the H-field with technology. Her greatest example so far is functional hologram technology.
  • Mugging the Monster: An Emotion Eater that feeds on fear, and gets particularly ravenous on Halloween, makes the mistake of going after Hermione, whose abilities not only lets her sense it, but trap it, something that it never thought possible.
  • One-Man Industrial Revolution: Discussed by a few characters. Hermione's already come up with innovations that could revolutionize society, and she's only just started to delve into what the H-Field can do. So far she's the only one who can create her Magitech, and she obviously doesn't want to just spend all her time making them, but given the fact that she can teach others to access the H-Field...
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Thankfully for Hermione, she has run into several of them. Not only with her supportive parents and grandma, but also how the staff at Oxford diligently works to be as professional and respectful as possible. They have also come to appreciate the potential threats of people wanting to weaponise Hermione, as well as the consequences if she is pushed too far, and are taking steps to avoid this.
  • Super-Empowering: Through exposing them to an H-field distortion, Hermione allows her parents to recognize its presence and use it themselves.
