Go To

"When did you start to remember?" He asked next, relaxing further in his seat, which Kyo found calming.

Kyo wakes up in a strange place, not sure what year it is or what is going on or if anything she remembers is actually reliable. So she just does what she's always done; live her life. It soon enough becomes more about survival than anything else.

In which another lease on life is a bit more complicated than Kyo had at first anticipated.

Hear the Silence by EmptySurface is a Naruto Self-Insert fanfic.

Reborn to Shiranui Kou and Isshun a few years before the outbreak of the Second Shinobi War, Shiranui Kyo is thrown into a world far darker than the one she read about in a manga.

Has a collection of short side stories, Between the Silence, covering scenes that were not included in Hear the Silence.

Hear the Silence contains examples of:

  • Achilles' Heel: Regardless of her talent and graduation from the Academy at age 6, Kyo is still a child and does not have the endurance of her older teammates. This is even more pronounced during her time in ANBU, where her teammates end up carrying her for large stretches.
  • Acquired Poison Immunity: A trait of the Torikabuto Clan, described as not quite being a kekkei genkai similar to the Uzumaki ability to create chakra chains, is their ability to adapt to toxins and eventually become immune to them entirely.
    • Kou is a downplayed example, has picked up a slight resistance to poison after all his time with Isshun.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Amikichi Naoki has parts of both legs amputated after being severely injured by an Iwa shinobi during a border clash during the Second Shinobi War.
  • Badass Teacher: Yamanaka Katsurou, Kyo’s Jounin instructor, is one of Konoha’s best sensors and a talented Jounin with a reputation for using Mind Rape on his enemies. He is also an ANBU operative.
  • Beneath Suspicion: The reason why Kyo is chosen to infiltrate Kiri during the Chuunin exams. The Jounin being sent to Kiri would be under enough scrutiny they wouldn’t be able to move without being noticed. The young Genin, on the other hand, might be able to get away with it if they were skilled enough simply because they will be dismissed because of their age.
  • Blessed with Suck: The Acquired Poison Immunity of the Torikabuto applies to painkillers and sedatives as well, meaning that Kyo has to suffer through surgery without it being numbed. Kou says that Isshun had the same problem. It also turns out to nullify the drugs and shots that kunoichi use to prevent their periods.
  • Boring, but Practical: Kyo’s ninjutsu usage, she states she would prefer to use small but devestaing ones compared to large and flashy ones.
Kyo: It’s not like someone will be more dead just because you take out all the surrounding trees together with your target.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Naoki Amikichi is no longer able to continue being an active shinobi due to the amputation of both his legs. There is still some hope that Jiraiya will be able to get into cryptography though.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Kyo’s preferred method of fighting is to nail her opponents with poison needles, while supressing her chakra and with her chameleon jutsu active, without them even realising she is there.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The teenage shinobi Kyo saves from being killed by Ame forces in Chapter 37? Chapter 89 reveals it was Senju Nawaki, who is still alive.
  • Crippling Overspecialisation: Isshun was described by the Hokage as one of his best assassins, being tremendously skilled in stealth and poisons, but Kou states that she wasn’t as skilled in any of the other areas and she wasn't really trained for the battlefield. It is what killed her in the end.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Fuuinjutsu as a whole. Jiraiya states that there are very few things you cannot do with fuuinjutsu, being limited only by your imagination, skill level, and competence. Unfortunately, anything beyond the basics becomes increasingly complicated and there is a high death toll associated with the art, hence why more shinobi don’t go into the field.
    • Seal tattoos especially fall under this. Due to chakra pathways in the body, the seal would have to be entirely personalised and made from scratch, not to mention taking into account multiple factors around the individual’s chakra. Uzumaki Hinata points out that very few people pursue them for these reasons, in spite of the advantages.
  • Door Stopper: Currently at over 600,000 words.
  • Explosive Leash: After being kidnapped by Kumo shinobi, Kushina and Ashika are fitted with arm restraints that explode if someone tries to take them off. The blast wouldn’t be enough to kill hem, but would wound them badly.
  • Killed Offscreen: Isshun is killed on a mission during the Second Shinobi War. Word of God establishes that she was killed on an ANBU mission when an assassination went wrong.
  • Last of His Kind: Before Kyo, and later Genma, were born Isshun was the last living member of the Torikabuto Clan who were actively hunted and killed off in the First Shinobi War due to their particular skillset. After her death, Kyo and Genma are the last two of Torikabuto descent left.
  • Late to the Tragedy: When Konoha receives a distress signal from Uzushio, they are forced to deploy the ANBU due to the imminent siege of Konoha by a regiment of Iwa shinobi. By the time Konoha’s ANBU arrive at Uzushio the village’s barriers have already been destroyed and most of the village has already fallen to the combined forces of Kiri and Kumo.
  • Magic Antidote: Firmly averted. Katsurou is stuck in a medically induced coma for some time after being poisoned due to his lungs sustaining damage and it is a whole year before he has recovered enough to be sent back out into the field.
  • Mind Rape: Yamanaka Katsurou has a particular reputation for this. After being on the wrong side of a genjutsu specialist on a mission he apparently shredded three Konoha shinobis’ minds before he was incapacitated.
  • Mundane Utility: Jiraiya uses earth ninjutsu in order to create a new road for a village.
    • Uzumaki Aita uses sealing scrolls to store the huge amount of groceries for the Uzumaki Clan compound.
  • News Travels Fast: Kyo filing an inappropriate conduct report against Jiraiya gets around Konoha on the day she filed it. She muses that the Konoha gossip mill works fast.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Kou’s mother does not approve of Kou’s marriage to Isshun because she is a kunoichi, considering her own Stay in the Kitchen mentality.
  • Ominous Fog: Kirigakure is constantly shrouded in deep mist. Ameyuri tells the Konoha shinobi present for the first Chuunin Exam not to wander into it, because they might catch something unfortunate or there might be someone waiting in there. Then comes the “second” stage of the Chuunin Exams, where Kiri Genin are lurking and waiting to strike. Plus the grown Kiri shinobi who keep putting the Konoha Genin under genjutsu.
  • Rank Up: Kyo is promoted to Chuunin in Chapter 30. She is promoted to Jounin in Chapter 81, in the wake of the Kiri mission.
    • Minato is promoted to Chuunin during the Kiri Chuunin Exams.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Inuzuka ninken whose partner die typically fly into a rage and try to kill as many enemies as possible. Kisaki ripped out the throat of a Suna shinobi before ripping his head off after Taku died.
  • Running Gag: “Don’t piss off the poison specialist” is a line repeated several times by Konoha shinobi.
  • The Shrink: Generally falling under the Awesome category, and are mandatory for anyone ranked Chuunin or above in Konoha. Katsurou is Kyo’s, and it is mentioned that Yamanaka are often territorial of their own students. Minato has Yamanaka Chie, who Kyo goes to when Katsurou is out of the village.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: Tsunade was pregnant with twins after Dan’s death, but was unsure whether she wanted to go through with the pregnancy. She eventually decided to go through with having them, naming them Shinrin and Kiko.
  • Stealth Expert: Isshun and Kyo. Isshun dryly points out that generally people are not happy about assassinations, whether successful or not, so being difficult to locate is a necessity. Kyo combines being able to suppress her chakra with a chameleon jutsu, making her incredibly difficult to detect.
  • Take That!: Kyo takes a swipe at the confusing timeline of the manga.
“And no matter how much fanfiction she'd written about the many and varied characters in Naruto, she quickly realised she didn't remember everything. The author had screwed up the time-line, too, so who knew what the hell could happen!?”
  • There Are No Therapists: Pointedly averted. Any ninja ranked Chuunin or above is required to have sessions with a shrink to ensure that at the very least they are stable. Jounin have stricter requirements, considering one of them going off is worse than if it was just a Chuunin.
  • You Are Number 6: Potential ANBU recruits are given a number painted on their blank masks during the week-long trials, and that is their name for that week.
