Gym Leader Wiki by OkonoMiyagi is a Pokémon fanfic themed around giving the Indigo League and Johto gym leaders realistic-seeming Wikipedia pages.

The fic is written like a Wikia article. Each chapter revolves around a gym leader or Elite Four member, in the order they are battled in the games. Gym Leader Wiki uses a mix of game canon and anime canon to create fictionalized summaries of the characters lives.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • Blue's name is "Gary", but he predominantly goes by a childhood nickname.
    • Red's real name isn't "Red".
    • It's mentioned that the male protagonist of the Johto games (Ethan) is known as "Gold", but no one knows his true name.
  • But Not Too Foreign: Despite being the "Lightning American", Lt. Surge was actually born in Vermilion and only moved to NYC as a teen.
  • Childhood Friends: Professor Oak and Agatha are childhood friends (and rivals).
  • Composite Character: The characters are mixes of their game and anime incarnations.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation:
    • It's implied that Lt. Surge suffers from PTSD due to his military experience.
    • Erika is narcoleptic, explaining why she's such a sleepyhead.
    • At age ten, Will was blinded in his left eye due to an Onix attack. This is why he covers that eye.
  • Disappeared Dad: Falkner's dad died in 2000, leaving him in charge of the gym.
  • Driven to Suicide: Jasmine began the Piedras Project, the first anti-suicide organization in Johto. It's named after former Olivine Gym Leader, Nicholas Piedras, who commited suicide at age 66.
  • Fictional Counterpart: Some in-universe shows have their real names but others, like Who Wants to be a Pokémillionaire?, use altered titles.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Like in the anime, Misty has one. Blaine made the error of poking fun of it on his quiz show, causing Misty to storm out mid-show and quit as a question reader.
  • Last-Name Basis: "Surge" is Lt. Surge's surname.
  • The Mafia: A rumor is that Giovanni was born into a mafia family, but it's been disputed.
  • Meaningful Rename:
    • At ten, Kyo changed his name to "Koga" because he wasn't fond of having a one-syllable name.
    • Janine's birth name is "Anzu". She chose a new name at age ten by reversing the word for "ninja". She changed her name because people would frequently pronounce "Anzu" incorrectly.
    • Clair's original surname was "L'Aigle". She changed it at 16 due to people frequently misspelling it.
  • Memetic Badass: invoked "Gary Motherfucking Oak" is an actual internet meme even in-universe.
  • Named by the Adaptation: All the gym leaders are given full names:
    • Brock is named "Brock Slate".
    • Misty is named "Misty Waterflower".
    • Lt. Surge is named "Mayfield Surge".
    • Erika is named "Erika Aoyama".
    • Koga is named "Koga Shimizu". Similarly, his daughter Janine is named "Janine Shimizu".
    • Sabrina is named "Sabrina LaFay".
    • Blaine is named "Blaine O'Donnell".
    • Giovanni is named "Giovanni Pavesi".
    • Falker is named "Falkner Jausch".
    • Bugsy is named "Bugsy Silvestri".
    • Whitney is named "Whitney di Marco".
    • Morty is named "Morty Levin".
    • Chuck is named "Chuck Morris".
    • Jasmine is named "Jasmine Diamante".
    • Pryce is named "Pryce Howard".
    • Clair is named "Clair Lee".
    • Lorelei is named "Lorelei von Kleinheardt".
    • Bruno is named "Bruno Jacobs".
    • Agatha is named "Agatha Christiansen".
    • Lance is named "Lance Chevalier".
    • Will is named "Will Powers".
    • Karen is named "Karen Rénard".
  • Only Known by Their Nickname:
    • Red's name is not really "Red". That's just what the media knows him as.
    • Blue's name is "Gary", but he's been called "Blue" since childhood because he really likes the color. Most know him as such, but his birth name is also frequently cited thanks to internet memes.
    • The male Johto protagonist is only known as "Gold" to the press.
  • Parental Abandonment:
    • Bugsy was abandoned at a month and left in the custody of Kurt.
    • Lance was raised by his grandmother because his parents were killed by an Ursaring when he was four.
    • Clair was raised by her grandmother, but it's not mentioned why.
  • Patchwork Fic: The story is mainly based on the games but it takes elements from the anime, such as Brock's background and trainers frequently going on journeys at 10.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Cousins Clair and Lance were raised together by their grandmother, making Clair's rivalry with Lance closer to a Sibling Rivalry.
  • Show Within a Show: Blaine has hosted several, such as Poké Quiz Attack 25 and Poké Family Feud.
  • Sleepyhead: Erika's frequent sleeping in the games is attributed to narcolepsy. Her narcolepsy can be triggered at bad times, such as when she fell asleep on Blaine's quiz show.
  • Supreme Chef: Brock is supreme at making food for both humans and Pokémon. He has released two critically acclaimed cookbooks - Rock-Solid Recipes: Food For the Soul and PokéCook: Keeping Your Pokémon Healthy. He's also a regular on Iron Chef.
