Fanfic / Gravity Falls: Once More

Go To

Gravity Falls: Once More is a Gravity Falls Continuation Fic by Absolute Rift.

After leaving Gravity Falls, Dipper and Mabel return four years later to dig up new mysteries and encounter friends and enemies, both new and old.

This fanfic provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: As in canon, Dipper and Mabel have trouble remembering Blendin's name until directly told it.
  • Agent Scully: Derrick, at first, in regards to Gravity Falls' weirdness. An encounter with a dragon disabuses him of this idea.
  • Ant Assault: Dipper, Mabel, and Pacifica get themselves shrunk, and a colony of ants try to crown Dipper king and get him to sign a peace treaty between humans and ants. Dipper tries to explain that he doesn't have the authority to promise that humans will no longer step on ants, and he has his own life to live. The ants don't take it well.
  • Ascended Extra: Thompson, whose only main character trait in the original series was being the Butt-Monkey in Wendy's friend group, gets to be the focus in a few A Day in the Limelight episodes.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other:
    • Shermie initially lashes out upon seeing the Stans again, but he quickly admits that he missed his brothers.
    • Ryland and Evan don't get along at first in "Looking After the Wiser" due to Ryland not really appreciating his talent with computers. Ryland apologizes for not being involved in his brother's life, and their relationship improves as a result.
  • Back from the Dead: Bill. And unfortunately, he's still in Stan's head, at least at first.
  • Badass Biker: Mabel's opinion of Ryland, who does BMX as a hobby. To be fair, he's pretty good at it, though he thinks he's not because of his rival Yuri using Gideon's old amulet to sabotage him.
  • Blatant Lies: In her account of their first adventure, Mabel tells Ryland that Dipper was kidnapped by gnomes and she saved him by taming a dragon. He buys it, but she ends up having to fess up to the lie when they meet an actual dragon.
  • Bully Hunter: How Dipper first meets Derrick Mendez. Derrick punches out a bully who was picking on Dipper, leading the two to become best friends.
  • Child Prodigy: Evan Reeds, who becomes Ford's apprentice. Dipper takes this poorly at first, but he gets over it.
  • Cooldown Hug: Stan gives one to Dipper when he's having a breakdown over Bill's return, Wendy being turned into a statue, and having no idea if their plan to fix this will work.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Derrick.
Robbie: Kid, I'm gonna throw you off my balcony if you keep it up with the smartass comments.
Derrick: And I guarantee that'll be much more entertaining for everyone than whatever the hell this is.
  • Downer Ending: "Red Herring." After all the efforts the heroes made to try to prevent Bill's restoration, he ends up re-taking control of Stan and forcing Wendy to shake his statue's hand, freeing him while forcing Wendy to take his place. Also, Robbie and Tambry end up breaking up after she learns that he still has feelings for Wendy.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Stan briefly considers mentoring Wendy in a life of crime upon thinking her family situation is similar to his own, but backs out when he realizes that Wendy's father actually cares about her, unlike his, and Wendy is trying to escape from the expectations her father is placing on her.
  • Four-Philosophy Ensemble & Four-Temperament Ensemble: Dipper, Mabel, Derrick, and Ryland have this dynamic in the storylines the four of them have together.
  • Generation Xerox: When Dipper and Mabel are sent to the Wild West era of Gravity Falls, they meet the ancestors of several characters who look identical to their modern descendants.
  • Halloween Episode: "Stan-doff" has all the elements of one. In addition to Bill Cipher coming Back from the Dead and possessing Stan, the B-plot involves Dipper and Mabel attending a Summerween costume party at the Mystery Shack.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Despite helping Dipper and Mabel out in "Where the Weirdness Is", Jeff returns to his old Queen-seeking ways in "Back to the Bunker" upon Mabel rejecting him one too many times.
  • Irony: Mabel tries very hard to play matchmaker for Dipper and Pacifica, but finally gives up when they make it perfectly clear that they're not interested... which is around the time that they actually do start crushing on each other, with Mabel remaining oblivious to all the signs of this going forward.
  • Original Character: The fic has a few. Dipper's rebellious friend Derrick, new Mystery Shack employee Ryland, and Ryland's hacker brother Evan. However, they are generally secondary characters to the main cast.
  • Put on a Bus: Candy and Grenda are absent for the first part of the June arc due to attending band and wrestling camp respectively. They return during the Stans' Welcome Back Party in "Many Happy Returns."
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: "The Gossiper" has Dipper and Mabel tag-team Gideon after learning that despite Gideon's claims of turning over a new leaf at the end of the original series, he still let the president of the Gravity Falls Bank coerce him into writing a series of unflattering articles about the Mystery Shack. This ends up invoking enough of a Heel Realization in Gideon that he shows up to rescue the Mystery Twins when they're being held prisoner by the aforementioned bank president later on in the episode.
Gideon: Let me help! Ya know, just in case things go wrong! I can back you two up!
Dipper: No. Things will only go wrong if you're around. You could still be working for this guy for all we know.
Mabel: Especially considering you just refused to sell him out a minute ago.
Gideon: It was paid order! It was an opportunity!
Dipper: Everything's an opportunity to you, Gideon! But you never take a moment to think about what you'll end up doing to others! I mean, did you once think about us when writing that article?
Gideon: [smiles nervously] Well, to be fair, it has been four years since our last meeting.
Dipper: [facepalms] See? This is why we can't take you seriously. I can't believe I thought you could change. [exits Gideon's office] Let's go, Mabel.
Gideon: B-but I have changed! I'm not evil anymore!
Mabel: It isn't about whether you're evil or not. Maybe you're not "evil" anymore, but you're still just as selfish as you've always been. You're still a thorn in our sides. A smaller thorn, but a thorn nonetheless. [follows Dipper out of the office]
  • Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Wendy's mother, Valora Courderoy, was sucked into a portal to the Nightmare Realm and presumed dead. She isn't, and she even made it back to Gravity Falls, but she avoids letting her family know because she thinks it would only cause more heartbreak.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: The Shapeshifter in "Back to the Bunker" attempts to get revenge on Ford, Dipper, Wendy, and the others.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: Mabel and Derrick cannot stand each other.
  • Shipper on Deck: Mabel tries to set Dipper and Pacifica up, but they're mostly annoyed by her efforts, and Mabel has to realize that you can't force love. Only for Dipper to realize he actually does have a crush on Pacifica after Mabel stops trying to force the issue.
  • Smells Sexy: Ford created a few hygiene products with unfortunate side effects during college that he's having trouble disposing of safely, and Dipper accidentally uses a bottle of cologne that works far too well.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Jeff isn't over Mabel, and when Mabel starts dating Ryland, he's not happy.
  • Taken for Granite: Wendy at the end of "Red Herring." She gets better.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Pacifica chews out Dipper for dragging her along on his investigation of the alien mummy tomb, when Ford had specifically warned him not to carry out that investigation in the first place.
  • With Friends Like These...: Played for Drama with Thompson, who tries various things to keep his friend group from falling apart. He succeeds in the end, only to realize none of them really considered him a friend in the first place.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Dipper's reaction to learning that Blendin's alias while living in the Wild West is "Blake", which was the name that he and Mabel had previously mistaken as his actual name.
