Gold Eyes To Red
is a Fullmetal Alchemist oneshot by ffrindyddraig. It's an AU where Hohenheim leaves earlier and Al is half-Ishvalan.
Edward and Alphonse Elric are two young brothers. They don't usually tell others that they're maternal half-brothers. They don't tell anyone that Alphonse's father is Ishvalan.
The oneshot covers how the manga could have gone if Alphonse was half-Ishvalan.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Alternate Universe Fic: Alphonse is Edward's half-brother. He's also half-Ishvalan.
- Disappeared Dad: Both Edward's father and Alphonse's father are absent. It's never clarified what happened to Al's dad.
- Fantastic Racism: Alphonse suffers racism because he's half-Ishvalan. During the war, his mother had to hide him from the military. When Al and Ed left their hometown, they began to experience racism more blatantly.
- Half-Breed Discrimination: Alphonse receives a lot of discrimination for his half-Ishvalan heritage. One instance is when a hospital refused to take him after he broke him arm as a child.
- Heritage Disconnect: Alphonse is half-Ishvalan through his Disappeared Dad. He was raised by his mother and feels nothing towards Ishvalan culture. This gets him into arguments with Scar, who believes Al should learn about Ishvalans more. In the end, Alphonse decides to take up Scar's offer to educate him on Ishvalan culture.
- Internalized Categorism: Alphonse is half-Ishvalan and feels discomfort about his Ishvalan traits, such as his red eyes.
- Morphic Resonance: Downplayed. Alphonse keeps his red eyes when his soul is put into the armor.
