Forget-me-not (don’t leave me behind) is a Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi fanfiction by Stelra_Etnae on Archive of Our Own. It is based on the premise that Madam Lan was presented with the opportunity to escape her confinement in the Gentian House when her two sons were very young.

Unfortunately, she could only take one of them with her when she left.

It can be read here.

This fanfiction includes the following tropes:

  • Action Mom: Yue Liu is a rogue cultivator who is raising her younger son on her own.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: As a result of being raised by his mother away from Cloud Recesses, Wangji is more open and befriends Wei Wuxian more easily.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Yue Zhan/Wangji for Lan Wangji, as he's using his mother's surname
  • Big Brother Instinct: Huaisang has an inverted version towards Xichen, whom he and his brother have been very close to since Yue Liu's departure with Wangji. He makes sure to warn Wangji to be gentle to the brother he abandoned.
  • Bookends: The fic starts and ends with Xichen getting a letter from his brother. Furthermore, it starts and ends with him having a box of correspondence from his family.
  • Cry into Chest: Xichen into Wangji’s when they reconcile. And then again into his mother’s chest when they meet again. Poor Lan Xichen.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Madam Lan fled the Cloud Recesses with one child, leaving the other behind. While relatively little has changed in-canon, the characters' personalities have altered pretty drastically. As a result, Wei Wuxian and Yue Wangji get along better, while Lan Xichen and his younger brother's relationship is more strained.
  • Missing Mom: For different reasons than in canon, Lan Xichen grew up without his mother.
  • My Greatest Failure: Letting down Xichen, for Lan Qiren. Abandoning him, for Yue Liu.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Madam Lan is known as Yue Liu.
  • Nom de Mom: Yue Zhan uses his mother's surname instead of his father's. He's been raised by her and more or less on the run from his own family for years, so it's justified.
  • Parental Abandonment: Yue Liu could only leave with one child. So she did, abandoning Lan Xichen in Cloud Recesses.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: Madam Lan, who died when her children are very young, is still alive as of the Cloud Recesses study arc.
