Flames Among the Faith
is a fanfic written by Miss_Creant, which uses Catherine's ability to sense crests to upend the plot of Three Houses, in ways that no one could have expected. The fanfiction focuses on the relationship between Edelgard and Rhea, from enemies, to teacher and Student, to lovers, and beyond. The first chapter was posted on September 23rd, 2022, and it is ongoing.
Flames Among the Faith contains examples of:
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: Flayn is usually quite happy despite the events in canon, but after she catches feelings for Aribetha, she starts taking sleeping pills to deal with her fear of rejection due to how young she looks, in spite of her age.
- Adaptational Nice Guy: Zig-Zagged with Cornelia. She allies herself with the Church to being peace between the Agarthans and the Nabateans/Humanity, and She's far more cordial thanks to Sitri's influence on her. However, Her hand in killing Dimitri to give his uncle the crest of Blaiddyd, and assisting in the first battle of Garreg Mach is far worse than what she does in Canon.
- Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Regardless of route, Edelgard and Rhea end up sworn enemies in canon. Here, due to Rhea acting as Edelgard's tutor, they're able to much better understand each other and do away with the misconceptions they've had about each other, becoming closer in the process until they fall in love.
- Adaptation Deviation: While this story follows the plot of white clouds, with a Byleth who chose the Black Eagles, it deviates heavily from either the Silver Snow or Crimson Flower path when Edelgard undergoes tutoring by Rhea, leading the both of them to get closer together, and eventually averting their canonical fates as sworn enemies.
- Big Damn Kiss: Happens between Edelgard and Rhea at the end of Chapter 28.
- Death by Adaptation: Given the nails that are placed by Catherine finding out about Edelgard's crests, quite a few people die during the story.
- Dimitri dies at the hands of Cornelia, so that his uncle Rufus could get a crest, instead of at the hands of Edelgard. As for his uncle...
- After the first battle of Garreg Mach, Rufus dies at the hands of Mercedes, who did so to avenge the death of her brother Emile
- Hotter and Sexier: If the age rating of the fic wasn't a giveaway, the fic is significantly less chaste when it comes to depicting romance than the game it was based off of. Edelgard and Rhea's love-making sessions after they become a couple are very lovingly detailed.
- Official Couple: Edelgard and Rhea. They start out as enemies (from Edelgard's perspective) before they slowly change their perspectives on each other, to the point of kissing each other at the end of Chapter 28.
- Ruder and Cruder: Characters are significantly more profane here than they ever have been in the main game.
- Shipper on Deck: Dorothea acts as one for Edelgard and Rhea.
- Student/Teacher Romance: Rhea becomes Edelgard's tutor in this continuity, and the two of them end up falling in love.
