Fall of Liberty is a crossover fanfiction between Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare available on FanFiction.Net.

When a certain jade mask from the Old West is shipped to Liberty City, it awakens a nightmare not seen since the turn of the 20th Century. As the dead rise and the living become increasingly desperate to survive, Niko Bellic struggles to protect his family as martial law and armed gangs rule the streets and the city is quarantined and abandoned by the outside world.

Fall of Liberty provides examples of the following tropes:

• Absurdly Ineffective Barricade: The original LCPD checkpoints made up of police cruisers and NOOSE vans are shown to be almost useless in stopping the zombies. Nothing short of a twenty meter high concrete and steel wall can stop the undead hordes for long.
• A Million Is a Statistic:
  • By chapter six, Bohan has been declared an acceptable loss, leaving the inhabitants on their own.
  • By chapter 21, 99% of Liberty City and Alderney Island are dead or zombified.
• All Your Base Are Belong to Us: Broker and Bohan are completely overrun, while sections of Algonquin are eventually taken as well, and with Alderney barely holding out.
• America Saves the Day: In chapter six, CIA director Paul Ross tells Francis McReary that the Marines are going to be sent in to save Liberty City. Since Paul has gone through a Face–Heel Turn, this remains to be seen as either the truth or complete bullshit.
• Ancestral Weapon: Paul Ross carries a Browning Hi-Power as his main weapon, a family heirloom that has been passed down from great grandpa Edgar.
• Apocalypse How: A Class 0, and the CIA plans to keep it that way.
• Apathetic Citizens: Most likely the reason why Broker and most of Liberty City were overrun so quickly and later Algonquin is the fact that most citizens seem blissfully unaware of what is really going on.
• Armor Is Useless: Averted. LCPD riot armor and Kevlar vest help a lot against the undead menace.
• Artifact of Death: The only ones to touch the mask and live to tell about it so far is Niko Bellic and Paul Ross.
• Artifact of Doom: Our old friend, the Aztec Mask brings the undead to the 21st century.
• Awesome Personnel Carrier: NOOSE APCs start to get involved in the zombie killing in chapter thirteen.
• Ax-Crazy: The Algonquin Triads.
• Back for the Dead: LCPD Happiness Island guard Jill survives half a killing for no particular reason then returns much later, only to shoot herself.
• Badass Biker: The Lost MC. Who are not afraid to ride into zombie hordes with baseball bats and sawed off shotguns.
• Badass Crew: The team of Niko, Roman, Brucie, and Kate.
• Badass in a Nice Suit: FIB reinforcements still fight in their expensive suits.
• Badass Normal: Niko and every other survivor still alive.
• Berserk Button: Paul Ross gets pissed when the mask is stolen by Huang Lee.
• BFG: Browning M2s are now mounted as side door guns on NOOSE Annihilators that are used against zombies and civilians.
• Big Applesauce: Zombies invade the GTA equivalent of New York City. So close enough.
• Big Badass Battle Sequence:
  • The LCPD fighting against the undead as they storm Algonquin when the bridges are overrun in chapter eleven.
  • The LCPD again taking on a huge horde at the Libertonian in chapter thirteen.
• Big Bad: CIA director Paul Ross is revealed to be the villain in chapter fifteen.
• Black Helicopter:
  • CIA director Paul Ross arrives in a black UH-60 Annihilator helicopter to meet with Commissioner Francis McReary.
  • After a CIA hitsquad clears out Happiness Island, Director Ross arrives in a black CH-47 Chinook.
  • Black Cargobob helicopters transport troops to retrieve the mask in chapter fifteen.
• Bland-Name Product: Due to conflicts between the real and the GTA world, Patriots are considered generic Humvee type vehicles.
  • Chinooks and Cargobobs appear side by side.
  • Buzzard and Little Bird are used interchangeably as nicknames for the AH-6 attack helicopter.
  • A non-corporate example: FIB and FBI are seen as the same bureau.
• Bloodier and Gorier: You better believe it.
• Body Horror: The author isn't afraid to describe a group of zombies tearing apart some poor bastard, likewise most zombies tend to have many pieces of flesh missing from them.
• Boom, Headshot!: The only way to kill the zombies.
• Brick Joke: The first responders that arrived at the Ojo del Diablo in chapter one reappear as zombies in chapter fifteen.
• Call-Back:
  • The mask itself is the same from Undead Nightmare.
  • Escalera, Nuevo Paraiso are mentioned as the mask's origins.
  • CIA director Paul Ross reveals he is Edgar Ross' great grandson in chapter six.
• The Cavalry:
  • Some members of the Hillside Posse save Niko, Roman, and Jacob from being eaten by a horde back in Broker.
  • When Francis' convoy to the Libertonian museum is overrun and leaves him on foot, some LCPD officers on horseback cut down a pursuing horde with rifles, shotguns, riot shields, and machetes.
• Character Death:
  • Henrique and Mallorie in chapter seventeen.
  • In chapter 18, Armando was revealed to have been fed to the zombies after he was captured by the Triads and Huang is killed by Paul Ross.
• CIA Evil, FBI Good: The FIB are briefly mentioned to be fighting alongside the LCPD against the zombies. The CIA on the other hand are partaking in clandestine operations, which include killing LCPD officers, civilians, causing tons of collateral damage. All in the name of national security.
• Citadel City: Algonquin quickly becomes this as the plague spreads, with twenty meter high concrete walls being erected on the bridges and around the edges of the island, whilst LCPD and NOOSE units protect all of the bridges and the city interior from undead attack. It doesn't work.
• Cold Sniper: Many examples,but the worst offenders are various LCPD officers protecting the bridges, as well as NOOSE and eventually CIA units getting in on the action as the situation in Liberty City dissolves into all out anarchy
• Continuity Nod:
  • Chapter six mentions how Bryce Dawkins is currently in a "re-education" camp following a gay scandal with a Serbian immigrant.
  • Packie McReary is mentioned to have moved to Los Santos sometime before the zombie plague came to town.
• Crapsack World: Oh where to start...
  • Broker, being ground zero of the zombie plague, was effortlessly overrun by the zombies and is now a warzone with looters scavenging what they can, LCPD surviving by any means necessary, and innocent civilians getting caught in the crossfire.
  • Bohan was lost just hours after the zombies appear, now militias and heavily armed gangs rule the district, and it has been declared a lost cause.
  • Alderney has become a war torn shithole, with police and armed gangs fighting for control of the streets.
  • After the undead breach Algonquin, the city quickly goes to complete shit.
• Crossover: Between Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. Later crosses-over with Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.
• Cult: The cult of Xolotol which Luis Cartes, the son of a Colombian drug lord and Paul Ross are apart of.
• Curbstomp Battle: Anytime the elite CIA operatives go into battle whether it's against the LCPD, civilian survivors, the Chinatown Triads, or even NOOSE operatives.
• Darker and Edgier: Way more than either Grand Theft Auto IV or Undead Nightmare.
• Death from Above: Played horrifyingly straight where NOOSE Annihilator gunships mow down innocent civilians running from a horde and also when CIA helicopters use their miniguns against the Triad stronghold.
  For a few agonizing seconds Niko felt the bullets fly past, the harsh thud of the helicopter blades mixed with the high pitched clatter of the heavy machine guns and dull cracks of the NOOSE trooper's weaponry. He saw a man, clutching a small child to his chest, disappear in a blast of crimson and a howl of pain as he attempted to take cover behind a blood stained taxi...
• Devil in Plain Sight: Paul Ross.
• Deadline News: When Weazel News Chopper Four attempts to get exclusive pictures of Broker being overrun, it doesn't end well for those on board
• Doomed Hometown: Liberty City.
• Driven to Suicide: Chapter seventeen reveals that Gay Tony purposely OD'ed on pills sometime before the outbreak.
• Eaten Alive: With zombies taking over the city, this is a common occurrence for many.
• Elite Mooks: Paul Ross' CIA agents.
• Elite Zombie: Bolters, Retchers, and Bruisers make appearances in the plague as well as undead police in riot gear and ballistic armor.
• Emergency Broadcast: Heard by Niko and the gang in Chapter Seven. Made worse by the fact that by then Broker had already been almost fully overrun.
  "This is an emergency broadcast on behalf of the Liberty City Police Department. Until the current crisis is over Liberty City remains in a state of martial law. Due to the spread of the infection Algonquin Island is currently under a state of lockdown and any attempts to cross the bridges or use of other ways to reach the island shall be met with lethal force. All citizens are advised to barricade themselves in their homes and stockpile a weeks' worth of supplies. LCPD patrols will monitor the streets and any looting or crime will be dealt with swiftly."
  • Later Francis uses another one to announce the CIA as the enemy to all civilians.
• Enemy Mine: Chapter six reveals that guards at the Alderney State Correctional facility has released some prisoners and convinced them to help them guard the gates.
• Even Evil Has Standards: If you've played Grand Theft Auto IV, then you should know that Francis McReary isn't exactly such a good guy, but he is genuinely horrified at how the CIA is planning to cover up this entire incident and when director Ross kills one of his own agents simply because he had a tear in his hazmat suit.
• Everything's Deader with Zombies
• Everything Trying to Kill You: Zombies, zombie animals, looters, armed gangs, it just goes on and on.
• Evil vs. Evil: When Huang and the Triads ambush the mask's security escort, a CIA hitsquad are sicked on them when they shoot up the Triad HQ.
• Eye Scream: Henrique is killed from a shot to the left eye.
• Face–Heel Turn:
  • While not exactly giving off good guy vibes to begin with, Paul Ross turns in chapter sixteen.
  • Even though he was pretty much a Villain Protagonist in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Huang Lee was a relatively laid back, Affably Evil Deadpan Snarker. But after the zombie outbreak hits Liberty City, he pretty much becomes the mad emperor of The Triads and the Tongs, and pretty much kills any trespassers on sight. While this does lead to an Evil vs. Evil clash when his soldiers steal the Jade Mask from Paul Ross, they also shoot Henrique, feed Armando to the zombies, and Huang Lee himself chops off Malorie's head.
  • Karen, Francis' assistant, is reveled to have been a CIA mole in chapter 20.
• Friendly Local Chinatown: While on their way to Alderney, Niko and the crew cut through Chinatown to reach a marina. This Chinatown is not so friendly anymore and is under watch by Triads who will kill any and all trespassers.
• Gas Mask Mooks: LCPD, NOOSE officers, and CIA agents wear these due to thinking the zombie virus is airborne.
• Genre Savvy: Niko briefly in chapter five.
  Niko: "You did shoot them in the head didn't you? That's how they always kill zombies in those shitty horror stories..."
• Ghost City: Liberty City quickly becomes this, at first because of an LCPD curfew and later on as the zombies begin to overrun the city.
• Give My Regards in the Next World: Niko quips a Type 1 to a follower of Xolotl in chapter five.
  Niko: "If you see Xolotol on the other side (blows follower's head off) Tell him... fuck him and all his little followers!"
• Gorn: The author can be very detailed on people getting torn apart.
• Guns Are Worthless: Subverted. Guns are only useless if you don't aim for the head.
• Heel–Face Turn: NOOSE become a vital part of the resistance after Francis turns against the CIA and order them to stop killing civilians.
• Hellish Copter: Subverted to an extent. The only time helicopters are vulnerable to the undead is when they fly too close to the ground or when a RPG is fired at it.
• Heroic BSoD: Niko and his entire crew goes through this after Mallorie is killed by the Triads.
• Hero Killer: Paul Ross has already killed Luis Lopez and Francis McReary.
• Hold the Line: This seems to be the logic behind the LCPD sealing off Algonquin behind steel gates and high concrete walls and is also seen when riot police armed with nothing more than steel shields and batons fight against the undead as they pour through the breached Algonquin Bridge gates.
• Hollywood Tactics: Subverted. The LCPD, CIA death squads, and civilian survivors are competent when fighting the undead.
• Hope Spot: The CIA attack on the Triad stronghold, with Kate thinking it was the LCPD attacking.
• Horseback Heroism: Some LCPD officers on horseback save Francis from a horde and a column of police cavalry are seen by Niko in chapter fourteen.

• Immune to Bullets: Unless you land a head shot, the zombies will keep on coming no matter how many times they are shot anywhere else. This is especially true of the undead NOOSE officers first seen in Chapter Eleven
• Incongruously-Dressed Zombie: To show the true extent of the infection,the outfits of the zombies vary wildly, from news reporters and women in cocktail dresses and party outfits to paramedics, police officers and armored NOOSE personnel.
• Kill It with Fire:
  • The LCPD begin burning the dead early on in the outbreak.
  • Ross borrows USAF and US Navy planes to drop napalm bombs.
• Killed Mid-Sentence:
  • A NOOSE commander at the Algonquin bridge when a Retcher attacks him.
  • Henrique in chapter seventeen, when he is shot in the eye.
• Let's Get Dangerous!: As the situation grows more and more dire, the LCPD and the NOOSE whip out the attack copters, missiles, and even NOOSE APCs.
• Leave No Survivors: The standard protocol of CIA agents.
• Lightning Bruiser: The Bruiser zombie appropriately enough.
• Machete Mayhem: Some LCPD officers on horseback carry machetes.
• Manipulative Bastard: Paul Ross.
• The Mafia: Mentioned in chapter seventeen, where they are fighting against the Triads for turf in Alderney.
• Meaningful Name: Ojo del Diablo, the name of the cargo ship that brings the mask to Liberty City means "Eye of the Devil" in Spanish. It is also a location in Red Dead Redemption.
• Militaries Are Useless: Subverted. Actual ground forces have yet to make an appearance, so only the LCPD remains to fight the zombies. When well trained CIA operatives go up against the undead and the USAF are called in to help try keep the virus contained, they prove themselves very competent
• Mob War: One is still being fought between the Alderney Mafia and the Triads.
• The Mole: Karen aka Michelle.
• More Dakka:
  • NOOSE Annihilator helicopters have been outfitted with .50 cal Browning machine guns which are used against zombies... and civilians.
  • NOOSE Little Bird helicopters make appearances after Algonquin is overrun.
  • Survivors at the church led by Luis Lopez. use light machine guns against a horde.
• Motorcycle Jousting: One sided. The Lost MC ride their bikes into zombies hordes while taking them down with baseball bats.
• Mugging the Monster: In one chapter, a group of looters tries to kill Niko and his crew, it doesn't end well for the Looters.
• Necessarily Evil: How the lock-down on Algonquin is seen as.
• Night of the Living Mooks
• Not Using the "Z" Word: Averted unlike in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.
• No FEMA Response: Subverted. The US government have placed a seven day quarantine on the city until the infection is deemed to have burned itself out or until everyone is dead.. At the end of this period they plan to send in the Marines and clear up the city.
• Off with Her Head!: Mallorie is executed this way by Huang Lee in chapter seventeen.
• Oh, Crap!:
  • Niko has this reaction in chapter three when he hears a horde of zombies approaching... just as him, Roman, and Jacob are getting arrested.
  • Niko again in chapter three when he sees a rioter at an LCPD roadblock pull out a gun and kill an officer which leads to the other police at the to roadblock to gun down unarmed civilians.
• Offpage Moment Of Awesome: In chapter six, it is briefly mentioned that The Lost MC were filmed charging at zombies hordes on their motorbikes only armed with baseball bats and sawed off shotguns.
• Police Are Useless: The LCPD are overrun by the Zombies in Broker, Bohan, and eventually parts of Algonquin while the Alderney PD is fighting both the zombies and armed gangs who want to make their own kingdoms. However, the NOOSE seem to doing better but are still getting torn up out there. This is later averted as the LCPD become more battle hardened and experienced in zombie warfare.
• Police Brutality: As the situation goes more and more down the shitter, in Broker, the LCPD start firing on unarmed civilians, which even horrifies Niko and for good reason.
• Put on a Bus: Little Jacob decides to stay with what remains of Hillside Posse in Broker.
• The Quisling: A recently infected man shows an attacking Bolter his bite wound in a desperate attempt to be spared. It doesn't work.
• Raising the Steaks: As the infection spreads zombie dogs, horses, and other animals become a threat.
• Rank Scales with Asskicking: Francis McReary, Agent Hill, the head of the Liberty City branch of the FIB, and CIA Director Paul Ross are not afraid to fight the zombies alongside their guys in the field.
  Francis considered his options. Either he sat behind those strong walls back there and waited for the Marines to come rolling through in five days' time, or he went out and actually tried to save the remaining people of Algonquin from the nightmarish fate that awaited them at the hands of the zombie hordes.
• Redshirt Army: The LCPD at first but they get better later on.
• The Remnant: Units of the LCPD in Broker become this as more stations get overrun.
• Run or Die: The undead hordes are so large that anyone who attempts to fight them head on is quickly overrun or infected themselves. The main reason Niko and the gang manage to survive is because,when they face the undead, they are prepared to run than fight pointlessly.
• Semper Fi: In chapter six, Paul Ross states that the Marines are going to be sent in to save Liberty City... in seven days. So until then, the LCPD and the entire city are on their own.
• Senseless Sacrifice: In chapter four, one of the LCPD officers that arrested Niko, Roman, and Jacob chooses to help his fellow officers rather than getting the hell out of there. He along with his comrades end up a zombie chow but it gives the crew a chance to escape.
• Shout-Out:
  • Many of the chapter titles are references. Examples include 'Isolated System' , 'The Salvation Gates , 'The Morning of the Dragon' , 'Fire and Blood', and 'Armageddon Rides to Town' (A reference to one of the author's other fanfictions)
  • In chapter seven, a horde of zombies brings down a Weazel News helicopter by latching onto the sides and taking it down with sheer weight.
  • As far as Francis knows, Gerry was executed by the supposedly psychotic governor of the newly established Alderney State Safe Zone at the prison.
• State Sec: The LCPD and the NOOSE turn into these when the zombies start overrunning entire districts of the city.
• Survival Horror
• They Did What They Had To Do: Francis McReary decides to lock-down and secure Algonquin at the expense of abandoning the rest of the city.
• Took a Level in Badass: The LCPD, who are usually depicted as complete dumbasses, are shown fighting bravely against the zombies. By chapter fourteen, they have completely adapted to the hellhole that the city has become and are way more battle hardened than ever before.
• The Great Wall: The wall built around Algonquin in the early stages of the outbreak, including twenty meter high steel gates on the bridges, watchtowers and barbed wire at the top, backed up by snipers in helicopters patrolling the skies above, all to keep the zombies and other survivors out of Algonquin.
• The Triads and the Tongs: After Algonquin is overrun, the Triads fiercely protect Chinatown and will kill any trespassers, whether human or zombie. With Huang Lee leading them. Meanwhile in Alderney, the Mafia and the Triads are still fighting turf wars.
• Title In: Every chapter begins with the location it starts in.
• Undead Child: Subverted in the case that they do appear, but Niko has not killed one yet.
• Unwitting Pawn:
  • Paul Ross had everyone from the LCPD to the US Government fooled on his true plans for the mask.
  • As for his CIA Elite Mooks, they too have no idea of his real plans, but still carry out horrible actions all in the name of national security.
• The Virus: Caused by the mask once again.
• Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Roman loses his lunch after the Landstalker him, Niko, and Jacob were riding in crashes.
• Watching Troy Burn: Francis McReary is forced to watch the rest of Liberty City descending into anarchy from the safety of Algonquin and then has to see Algonquin itself fall to the undead when the bridges are overrun.
• Wham Chapter:
  • Chapter eleven where the previously uninfected safe zone of Algonquin is overrun and descends into chaos
  • Chapter sixteen when Paul Ross pulls off a Face–Heel Turn.
  • Chapter seventeen, where Mallorie is executed by Huang Lee.
  • Chapter 20, where Kate is pulled from Niko's escape helicopter by zombies...
  • Chapter 25, ... only to return minus a leg, using Francis' legacy to organize The Remnant.
• What Happened to the Mouse?: We hear bits and pieces about their current state, but we currently have no idea what exactly is happening in Bohan or Alderney.
• We ARE Struggling Together: Some survivors are not afraid to attack other humans or the LCPD, the Alderney PD are fighting against both the zombies and heavily armed gangs, and the Mafia and The Triads are still fighting turf wars.
• You Are in Command Now: With the mayor on a "comfort trip" to Las Venturas and with deputy mayor Bryce Dawkins in a straightening asylum, Francis is left as the highest authority in Liberty City .
• You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Director Ross orders the NOOSE officers who aided him in securing the mask to be executed by his CIA troops when the mask is in his possession.
• Zerg Rush: Go on, guess.
• Zombie Apocalypse: Not on a global scale, but you get the idea.
