Did It Hurt When You Fell? is an AU story of Hazbin Hotel, in which Vaggie falls as a child and is taken in by Carmilla Carmine, who witnessed the event.

Did It Hurt When You Fell? provides examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Lucifer, only remembering that her name was a shade of red, thinks that Carmilla's last name is "Scarlet". Luckily this is before the ball actually starts, so Charlie corrects him.
  • Adaptational Villainy: If you thought Adam and Lute mutilating Vaggie and leaving her for dead in Hell was bad in canon, try reading about them doing it to her as a little girl.
  • Age Lift:
    • Vaggie is a child, around four or five years old, when she's cast into Hell in this AU, in contrast to canon when she's an adult.
    • Lute herself first appears when she's around sixteen or seventeen.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Odette and Clara immediately show concern for little Vaggie's injuries when they first see her, and easily accept her as their foster sister. According to Camilla, they both adore her.
  • Broken Angel: Little Vaggie isn't used to walking everywhere after losing her wings. She wants to be carried by her mother a lot.
  • Child Soldiers: Adam tries to make Vaggie, who can't be older than four or five and whose Exorcist helmet is almost comically oversized, kill a Sinner, and Lute is apparently only in her mid-to-late teens herself at the time.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: After witnessing Vaggie's mutilation and abandonment from within her safehouse, Carmilla ducks out to grab the angelic weapon Lute left behind in a Sinner they were trying to make the girl kill, and hears Vaggie's cries from under a tarp in a nearby alleyway. She makes it all the way back to the door, but she ultimately ducks back and grabs the young Fallen Angel, taking her to safety.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Mother: Carmilla's very much against Vaggie's work with the Hazbin Hotel, due to her worries about Vaggie (who doesn't remember her angelic origins) potentially catching the attention of Heaven again, and the two apparently had a massive argument about it that left them on silent terms.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: Carmilla mutters "Hostia puta!" (Spanish for "holy shit") when she finds Zestial suddenly in her chambers.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Husk first met Vaggie in this AU when Alastor offered Carmilla his services watching Vaggie at a gala for Velvette officially joining with Vox and Valentino and he ended up taking her flying. They met up a few more times before Alastor put a stop to it, and a flash-forward to after the Hotel gets started establishes that Vaggie doesn't remember him.
  • Happily Adopted: Vaggie is taken in by Carmilla, who witnessed her mutilation from inside her safehouse, in this AU.
  • Harmful to Minors: When Vaggie is only a little girl, Adam and Lute try to make her kill a sinner. She is too afraid to do it, so they cut her wings off, slash our her eye and leave her for dead in Hell.
  • Identity Amnesia: By the time she hits her adult years, Vaggie has long since forgotten that she's a Fallen Angel and genuinely believes she's a Sinner demon. This is a major source of conflict between her and Carmilla, as her work with the Hazbin Hotel runs the risk of Vaggie regaining her past identity and potentially making her a target, and Carmilla actively trying to keep that fact a secret means she refuses to tell Vaggie why she doesn't want her there.
  • Interspecies Adoption: Carmilla, a human turned sinner demon, adopts Vaggie, a little fallen angel.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite Vaggie having fallen at a much earlier age and getting adopted by Carmilla, she still ends up meeting and dating Charlie, with them still working on the Hazbin Hotel years later.
  • Is That Cute Kid Yours?: When Alastor offers Husk's services watching Vaggie when the family and Zestial are at a party celebrating Velvette officially joining Vox and Valentino with the other Overlords, the former Overlord assumes that Carmilla and Zestial somehow managed to get around the limitation that Sinners can't have biological children instead of Vaggie being adopted.
  • Like Mother, Like Daughter: Despite being adopted, it's made clear Vaggie takes a lot after Carmilla, with both being no-nonsense, tough-as-nails, and having very fierce tempers when provoked. Husk notes the similarities are to the point where he'd have assumed they were biologically related if he wasn't told otherwise.
  • Loophole Abuse: Alastor should be able to force Husk to give up what he's learned about Vaggie when he questions the cat demon, but since Alastor had made Husk swear a binding oath to keep the girl safe when forcibly offering Husk's services, Husk is able to lie to Alastor's face because telling him that Vaggie is a Fallen Angel would make her anything but safe.
  • My Beloved Smother: By the time Vaggie hits her adult years and works at the Hazbin Hotel, she calls Carmilla out on being this. While it is justified by the fact that her daughter's a Fallen Angel (which would paint a massive target on her back if Hell found out), Vaggie still finds it immensely frustrating. Part of the issue is that Vaggie doesn't remember her origins by this point, and Carmilla won't tell her out of paranoia, so she can tell that something about the Hotel scares Carmilla but has no idea what specifically it is.
  • Poor Communication Kills: The issues Carmilla and Vaggie have when the latter is an adult are partially fueled by the fact that not only has Vaggie forgotten that she's an angel, but that Carmilla won't tell her that she's an angel, even when she's helping Charlie with the Hotel and thus potentially putting herself back in Heaven's sights, so Vaggie can tell that something about the Hotel scares her mother but not what specifically that is.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: Name-dropped by Carmilla when Vaggie gets Zestial to carry her when Carmilla tells her to walk (since she's used to flying and Carmilla is trying to get her accustomed to walking on her own).
  • Quirky Girl, Quirky Tux: In Chapter 8, Vaggie, who is around 18 and in a rebellious phase, wears a half dress, half tuxedo similar to the one Michael Urie once wore to a royal ball.
  • Secret-Keeper: Zestial is the only one that Carmilla gives the full story about Vaggie's origins to.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: Husk is well aware that Vaggie's a Fallen Angel since she unwittingly told him when she was still a child. While it's clear Vaggie neither remembers Husk nor even that she's from Heaven by her adult years, he still strives to keep the secret in order to protect her.
  • Sick Episode: Chapter 6 has Carmilla come down with the flu.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Adam screams at Vaggie and slaps her hard when he can't make her finish off a Sinner despite her only being four or five, and stands by when Lute mutilates her and leaves her for dead.
  • Villain Takes an Interest: Alastor is visiting Rosie when Carmilla and Zestial visit to get Vaggie some new clothes, and seems to sense something about her. He later volunteers Husk's services as a babysitter when they're at a party for Velvette.
