Fanfic / Dangan Ronpa Behind Bars

Go To

Dangan Ronpa: Behind Bars is an ongoing fanfiction created by the user Deictix and is inspired by the visual novel series Danganronpa. The story takes place in a prison setting and follows an original cast of sixteen students, who have been trapped and forced to participate in a mutual killing game by the warden, Monohebi. The only way to escape the prision is by killing a fellow student and getting away with the crime. The standard Dangan Ronpa formula.

The story is written in both a prose format and a script format. The prose format is used for the daily life segments and the script format is used for the class trials and flashback segments. This fanfic mimics the mechanics of the original visual novel series and is explored through the viewpoint of Wakana Kawashima, the Ultimate Waitress.

There are significant spoilers for all three of the mainline games: Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.

Trigger Warnings: Eating Disorders, Abuse, Self-Harm

Beware, spoilers may be unmarked

This Danganronpa fanfic contains examples of:

  • Anyone Can Die: Standard.
  • Asshole Victim: Furuhatais an example of this attempting to kill Terajima before being killed by Yamaguchi
  • First-Name Basis: The story follows Japanese conventions and as a result most of the students use each other's family names with honorifics. Exceptions include:
    • Carrasco who opts to use Spanish honorifics, instead of Japanese. Makes sense as she is half Spanish.
    • Ichigohara and Hayasaka use given names with Japanese honorifics.
    • Yamaguchi opts to not use honorifics for most of the students. Makes an exception for the protagonist, using the honorific -sama.
    • Starting from the in-game chapter 4 Oyamada and Terajima use each other's given names as a form of endearment to show how romantically involved they have become.
  • Genki Girl: Ichigohara, who follows the 'live and let live' philosophy. This annoys some of the students, most notably Niizuma.
    • The clash in attitudes leads to Niizuma murdering Ichigohara in the in-game chapter three. Niizuma explains that she finds Ichigohara's life philosophy abhorrent.
  • Green Aesop: Relates back to Ichigohara's Ultimate. She often preaches using the freshest ingredients and the importance of nature and taking care of the environment. Highlighted when she becomes uncharacteristically angry at Komatsu for not following recycling procedures.
  • Hot-Blooded: Furuhata and Komatsu are shown to be 'passionate'. Terajima and Domoto can also get like this which is presented as much more of a threat in the story.
  • Jerkass: This applies to approximately half the students.
    • Domoto, Kasparov and Niizuma can come across as cold and condescending when their standards are not met.
    • Furuhata, Hayasaka and Yamaguchi can appear combative and argumentative to those they see as beneath them.
    • Terajima and Komatsu are also shown to be rather blunt to those they disagree with.
    • In-game chapter 2 Aozora acts this way to Kawashima due to the events of the previous in-game chapter.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Domoto, Kasparov and Niizuma are all shown to be very intelligent and make several astute arguments and observations throughout the story, even if their delivery can be less than kind.
  • Omniglot:
    • Sakiko Motoki is the Ultimate Linguist and is shown to be competent in speaking foreign languages.
    • Mayumi Carrasco being half Spanish and half Japanese, often speaks in a mixture of both Spanish and Japanese
  • Shrinking Violet: Oyamada and Eguchi embody this trope.
  • Sweet Tooth: Komatsu and Domoto are shown to quite enjoy sweets, with the former absolutely obsessed with anything food related, often opting to eat far more than the others.
  • Weight Woe: Trigger warning: This is used as a coping mechanism by Hayasaka and Eguchi who both suffer from different eating disorders. Hayasaka suffered with anorexia and then bulimia. Eguchi suffers from binge eating disorder and bulimia.
