Dangan Ronpa: A New Horizon of Despair by Koopakirby is a Danganronpa fanfiction.

It features an original cast of sixteen characters, all of them Hope's Peak Academy students. The students have been trapped on a space station known as the Kumet, and their only way of escaping is to commit the perfect murder.

It's written in script style and incorporates puzzles and mechanics from the original Dangan Ronpa games. It will feature spoilers for both games.

Dangan Ronpa: A New Horizon of Despair contains examples of:

  • Adorkable: invoked Said by Tarou to describe Tetsurou, who is not pleased with being described as such.
  • Angel Face, Demon Face: Hakari plays this trope all by herself, switching frequently between a caring smile and a disarming glare.
  • Asshole Victim: Uchuu turned out to be this. Though friendly and genial to most before being murdered, he was actually horribly cruel to Chishio, who more or less murdered him for it.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Tarou spends the better part of Chapter 1 acting nothing but kind and positive, calling everyone Friend and always doing his part to help and lift spirits. However, he turns out to be heavily involved in the murder that occurs that chapter, and claims to be a "good guy" afterward. He still tries to be friendly after the trial, but the others are far less trusting of him.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Ittetsu is the Ultimate Tsukkomi, but is missing whomever his actual boke might be. He makes do with Masaka.
  • Cannot Keep a Secret: Played With in the case of Tarou, who kept Shin's secret of being the Ultimate Loser until Shin made the knowledge public during the first trial, but told every one of his classmates about Abed's family being ruling class, which Abed didn't want anyone to know.
  • Chew Toy: Masaka becomes this for Ittetsu, much to her irritation.
  • Comical Overreacting: Ittetsu derives most of his comedy from this.
  • Control Freak: Hakari shows shades of this attitude, particularly once her leadership of the group is revoked in favour of Abed. When the revolver given to them by Monokuma is discovered, and Abed is the one given free access to it, she flies into a panic and steals the gun, even shooting Abed in the leg, albeit by accident.
  • Deadpan Snarker:
    • Minami occasionally gets this way when she's bothered by something.
    • Both Shin and Kaguya, also, although the former usually keeps his comments to himself.
  • Earth All Along: A discovery made in the beginning of Chapter 2 suggests that the students have actually been on their home planet the whole time.
  • Easily Forgiven: Hakari, mostly. With the exception of Ittetsu, who is deliberately cruel about everything anyway, everyone has forgiven Hakari for accidentally shooting Abed by the day after it happens, including Abed himself.
  • Evil Wears Black: Shin is surprised that Kaguya is pretty friendly despite being this.
  • First-Person Smartass: Like many Dangan Ronpa protagonists, Shin shows shades of this.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Tarou, ironically enough given his talent, becomes this after the first trial and his involvement in Uchuu's murder is made clear.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: Part of Itami's shtick, although she sometimes forgets herself.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: Hakari's hair always covers one of her eyes, but she switches eyes whenever she switches personalities.
  • If My Calculations Are Correct: Kimiko, the Ultimate Mathematician, says variations on this sometimes.
Kimiko: I've been running the numbers.
    [...]
Shin (thinking to himself): You "ran the numbers?" What numbers?
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Mei says this a couple times during her introduction.
  • Irony in the setting being outer space. Naturally, the Ultimate Astronaut kicked the bucket first.
  • It's All About Me: Minami has this attitude at times, speaking highly of herself at the expense of the others and becoming very unhappy if her greatness is challenged.
  • Jerkass: Ittetsu and Mei are primary examples, and Hozumi was this closer to the beginning of the story.
    • Even Uchuu turns out to be one, although almost exclusively towards Chishio, who would eventually murder him.
  • The Leader: Tarou tries to be one at the beginning, but Hakari almost completely usurps him. She becomes the leader of a group of several of her classmates, with only a handful of the students staying loyal to Tarou.
    • However, since this division amongst the students is largely responsible for causing the first murder, Hakari and Tarou are forced to step down, and the group system is dismantled. In its place, Abed creates a more democratic system, in which there is supposedly no de facto "leader", but Abed still fits this role regardless.
  • Loser Protagonist: Apparently Shin, whose talent is literally Ultimate Loser.
  • Mama Bear: Itami gets like this with Tetsurou, to the point that she's irritated just by people acting unkindly toward him.
  • Man of a Thousand Voices: Chishio is this In-Universe, being the Ultimate Voice Actor. He does startlingly accurate impressions of the others.
    • This is ultimately how the others come to accuse him in the first trial. With his skills, he was able to impersonate the voice of one of his classmates.
  • Meaningful Name: The name of Uchuu Hoshi, the Ultimate Astronaut, means "Space Star" in Japanese. This is Lampshaded by Shin.
  • Motor Mouth: Takamasa becomes this when he gets really into his auctioneer shtick.
  • The Nicknamer: Masaka is this, but only because she has trouble remembering her fellow ensigns' names.
  • Oh, My Gods!: Abed says "Ye gods" in reaction to seeing the first victim's body.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Abed becomes truly furious for the first time at finding out how actually involved Tarou was in Uchuu's murder.
    • At the end of the first trial, Mei, usually very eccentric as well as obnoxiously rude, offers the culprit a simple "Goodbye..."
  • Perp Sweating: The primary point of Hozumi's talent as the Ultimate Interrogator.
  • Pungeon Master: Accounts for about half of everything Chishio says.
  • Recycled In Space: Part of the main premise of the story; the killing game appears to take place on a spaceship piloted by Monokuma.
  • Secret-Keeper: Tarou promises to be this for Shin, who doesn't want anyone else to know his Ultimate talent.
  • Shout-Out: According to Word of God, contains a few to other Fangan Ronpas, such as Legacy of Despair and Forever Despair.
  • Shrinking Violet: Tetsurou stutters frequently and has trouble speaking for himself.
  • Taught by Experience: Tarou is this, since he has participated in two previous mutual killing games, and he tries to use this to the group's advantage, but he still isn't able to prevent the inevitable tragedies.
  • Technicolor Eyes: Abed and Itami both have violet eyes. Abed's even allegedly allow him to see in the dark.
  • Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: Tetsurou and Itami, one of the obvious duos in the group, easily qualify, with Tetsurou standing 5'4" and Itami 5'11". Ittetsu and Masaka also qualify, what with Ittetsu being the shortest of the group.
  • Verbal Tic: Uchuu frequently tacks on "space" before nouns to create such phrases as "space tasks" and "space look on your face" and, inevitably, "space space."
  • Wicked Witch: Mei is the Ultimate Witch, and she certainly fits the wicked stereotype.
  • Younger Than They Look: Mei is sixteen, according to her E-Handbook, though she claims to be immortal.
