Fanfic / Consequences And Control

Go To

"Consequences and Control" is a Downton Abbey fanfic by Sara K M where Mary Crawley's night with Kemal Pamuk has even larger repercussions.

Completed, has a spinoff called "Her Own Position" where Mary passes the exam to become a solicitor.

Tropes that appear in this fanfic:

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Since the story's events line up with Season 1, several characters appear earlier than in canon.
    • Martha Levinson shows up for Matthew and Mary's wedding which is much earlier than in canon.
    • The Flintshires make a relatively early appearance when the Crawleys make a visit to Scotland, including an 11-year-old Rose.
    • Since there are a few scenes at Violet's house, Violet's butler Spratt appears earlier than Season 4.
    • Ivy, the scullery maid in seasons 3 and 4, appears much earlier than in canon as it is implied Robert fired Daisy being unsure who helped Pamuk find Mary's room. This also applies to Baxter since O'Brien is let go as well.
  • Adaptation Expansion: Sybil's first season is shown while it was mostly offsreen in canon.
  • Adaptational Karma: In canon, Thomas is apparently never found out about helping Pamuk find Mary's room. Here, once it's ascertained that one of the servants (while the family doesn't know who) helped Pamuk, he's let go.
  • Ascended Extra: Ada Grey, Dickie's wife and Posthumous Character in the show, makes a full appearance in Chapter 16 during Sybil's debut season.
  • Baseball Episode: Chapter 11 features the annual Downton cricket match and Mary goes into labor during it.
  • The Butler Did It: Reversed since Carson is the only person who couldn't have helped Pamuk get into Mary's bedroom because of his loyalty to the Crawleys and Mary in particular.
  • Character Witness: When the servants are being laid off, Carson asks for Mrs. Hughes to stay as housekeeper, Mary asks to keep Anna on as her lady's maid and Robert asks Bates to stay as valet.
  • Child by Rape: Grace, given that Mary was taken without consent.
  • Deceptive Legacy: Matthew and Mary are determined to keep quiet about Grace's true parentage as Kemal Pamuk's daughter.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Mary realizes this is something she and Matthew have in common after he comes home injured after extricating Sybil from the brawl at Ripon.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Thanks to Mary getting pregnant with Kemal Pamuk's child, it causes a lot of ripples in the story.
    • Matthew and Mary are married a lot earlier than in canon because Mary is trying much harder to look for a husband.
    • Thomas, William, O'Brien, and Daisy are laid off from Downton because Violet decides that at least one of them helped Pamuk get into Mary's bedroom.
    • Connected to the above, O'Brien tries getting Cora to slip much earlier than in canon but because Cora isn't pregnant yet she only suffers a broken leg.
    • Because O'Brien is gone from Downton much earlier, Cora carries her fourth child to term: a son named Edward who becomes heir to Downton.
    • Edith marries Sir Anthony Strallan because Mary isn't there to sabotage her.
  • Give Him a Normal Life: At first, Mary intends to give up her child in Italy before Anna and Matthew talk her out of it.
  • In Spite of a Nail:
    • The brawl at the vote-counting in Ripon where Sybil is injured plays out almost exactly as in canon.
    • After O'Brien hears she's going to be laid off, she puts soap out so Cora slips. However since this happens earlier than in canon, Cora suffers a broken leg instead of a miscarriage.
    • Matthew volunteers for World War I.
    • Mary and Matthew have a son named George in the sequel.
  • Internal Reveal: In Chapter 12, Mary reveals to Violet that Pamuk is Grace's father.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Violet suggesting firing a large number of the staff is harsh, but makes sense because one of them clearly helped Pamuk rape Mary by guiding him to her room and they don't know who. Even Robert agrees with her.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Thomas winds up losing his job because he helped Pamuk get into Mary's bedroom (admittedly Robert doesn't know it was him).
  • Mr. Smith: Mary picks the name Grace Smith to use as an alias abroad, with Anna accompanying her as her sister.
  • "Near and Dear" Baby Naming: Mary gives her daughter the middle name Anne for her maid Anna.
  • Oh, Crap!: Mary when she realizes that Matthew figured out she's pregnant.
  • One-Night-Stand Pregnancy: Mary's night with Kemal Pamuk results in becoming pregnant with his child.
  • The Only One I Trust: Carson is the only one exempt from the various firings because of his loyalty to the Crawleys and Mary in particular; everyone else who stays is only allowed to by personal appeals or if they're New Meat hired after the Pamuk incident, i.e. Mrs. Hughes being asked to stay by Carson himself or Tom Branson being hired after the Pamuk incident.
  • Original Character: James Blake, Matthew's friend at university who also becomes Grace's godfather.
  • Paranoia Fuel: In-universe. When Matthew tells Mary he knows she's pregnant, the latter starts inwardly panicking, believing that one of the servants revealed her secret.
  • Parental Substitute: Matthew is perfectly willing to raise Mary's child as his own.
  • Practically Different Generations: Mary, Edith, and Sybil are all at least 20 years older than their younger brother Edward.
  • Replacement Flat Character: Christopher and Samuel, the two footmen who replace Thomas and William, are much less fleshed out than their predecessors.
  • Running Gag: Cora's pens running out, breaking, or just plain running.
  • The Scapegoat: Violet suggests firing a number of the staff after learning about Pamuk having his way with Mary, pointing out that someone clearly helped him reach her bedroom and were neglectful at best.
  • Shotgun Wedding: After finding she's pregnant, Mary frantically tries to find a husband, settling on Matthew before long.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Thomas's advance on Mr. Pamuk, which Pamuk used to blackmail him into Mary's bedroom, winds up setting off a chain of events that result in Mary's pregnancy, most of the servants getting fired, and, most significantly, Cora carrying her child to term.
  • Someone to Remember Him By: The nail that changes events is Mary finding herself pregnant with Kemal Pamuk's child after he dies in her bed.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Mary's daughter Grace mostly resembles her aunt Sybil with her dark hair and blue eyes.
  • Wacky Fratboy Hijinks: Matthew and James; James recalls a time when Matthew ran around the dorm in his union suit while drunk (and why Matthew keeps a firm lid on his own drinking) while Matthew threatens to speak of James' exploits with three girls.
