Go To

but i wrote the words to the swan song is a Romeo and Juliet and The Avengers (2012) Crossover one-shot fanfiction written by theviolonist and published in 2013.

In the fanfic, Juliet Capulet is alive by the end of the play's events, albeit Romeo is still dead. As it turns out, Juliet is immortal and she spends centuries wandering around Europe and America, going under different names and experiencing history first hand.

The fanfic can be read for free on Archive of Our Own here

The fanfic contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Sexuality: While Juliet Capulet is presumably straight in Romeo and Juliet, in the fic, she is bisexual and has two female lovers, Carlotta and Liv, at different points in the story.
  • Alliterative Name: One of Juliet Capulet's aliases is Juliet Jones.
  • All Lower Case Letters: The fic's title is entirely written in lowercase letters.
  • Back from the Dead: Even if it took him a long time to come back, Romeo was resurrected at one point off screen and he reunites with Juliet at the end of the story.
  • Crossover: The fic is primary a Romeo and Juliet fanfic but Black Widow as she appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes a brief appearance over half-way through and recruits Juliet to join the Avengers. However, Juliet turns down the offer and the fic moves on.
  • A Deadly Affair: Subverted. The Ottoman dignitary that fell in love with Juliet offers to have his wife killed just so he can marry her. Juliet tells him that she'll settle being his mistress, thus it's implied the dignitary's wife is spared as a result.
  • I Have Many Names: Juliet Capulet goes by many aliases throughout her long-lived life, which has a common pattern of having widely different last names but first names being either the same or similar to her original name such as "Juliet Schnitzer", "Julieta Carvalho", "Juliet Bates", "Mademoiselle Juliette", "Juliet O'Hara", and "Juliet Brontë".
  • Immortality Begins at Twenty: While Juliet is 13 in the original play, it's implied she still aged as she's alive by the end of the play but eventually stopped as she has to leave Roberto and Carlotta when they begin to wonder why she isn't aging.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Juliet Capulet lampshades how obvious that her "Juliet Brontë" alias was partly her real name when Natasha Romanov asks about it.
"That obvious, huh?" she laughs. "Well, half of it is."
  • Missing Mom: No direct mention of Carlotta's mother is made and is only briefly hinted at by Roberto's status as a widower who raises his daughter alone.
  • The Mistress: Juliet becomes a mistress to an already married Ottoman dignitary that fell in love with her instead of marrying him and spends twenty years living a luxurious life with him.
  • Rejected Marriage Proposal: Juliet rejects Paris' second marriage proposal. When Paris asks if it has something to do with her being a widow or bearing a curse, Juliet responds that it's neither and she simply wants to live.
  • Royal Bastard: Invoked. When Roberto is surprised to hear that Juliet is from the noble Capulet family as they're all dead by the time Juliet is living with him, she makes up an excuse about being an illegitimate daughter and how Capulets don't bother giving fake names to one.
  • Sue Donym: While Juliet Capulet bothers with having widely different last names for her aliases over the course of her centuries-long life, all of her first names for her aliases are always "Juliet" or a variant of it. She even lampshades how obvious it was when Natasha Romanov asked if her "Juliet Brontë" alias was her real name.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: The premise of the fanfic is that Juliet Capulet is still alive, instead of being Driven to Suicide in Romeo and Juliet. In fact, she happens to be immortal as well.
