- Cruel Mercy: L believes that Light just killing him would have been much more merciful than his "saving" him.
- Dating Service Disaster: Light snarks that the Kira case brought them together better than any dating service ever could. One lonely bored genius seeks another lonely bored genius...
- Deal with the Devil: When L begs Light to stop killing as Kira, Light tells him he can't because he's made a deal with two Shinigami.
- Everyone Can See It: Watari wants to know what's going on between L and Light.
- Evil Gloating: Light feels the need to inform L that yes, he is Kira.
- Fetishized Abuser: Light is an overall Crazy Jealous Guy asshole who feels entitled to L and restricts his freedom. On one occasion, Light attempts to rape L. L, on his part, is torn between being repulsed because Light is a serial killer and being in love with Light. L even finds the attempted rape sexually arousing.
- He Who Fights Monsters: when L gets out he wants Revenge he wants to make Light feel just as horrible and powerless as he felt. He wants to rape Light.
- Hypocritical Humor: Light makes disparaging comments about his sister for sleeping around when he's doing the same with Misa and L.
- Irony: Chief Yagami wants Light around the house more to be a good role-model for his sister.
- Love Martyr: L really does have feelings for Light but he's repulsed by them because Light is a Serial Killer and Light really does have feelings for L but since he's psychotic he has trouble expressing them.
- My God, What Have I Done?: L has this reaction after he attempts to "rape" Light in Revenge. He feels even worse when he realizes that Light didn't mind.
- No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Dine: the highlight of Light's day is returning to his apartment and bringing his hostage his cake.
- "Not If They Enjoyed It" Rationalization: Light uses this rationalization and later L believes he failed to rape Light because he enjoyed it.
- Operation: Jealousy: After L "dumps" Light, Light begins hitting on Matsuda to make L jealous.
- The Plan: L messes with the plumbing in Light's apartment so that building maintenance will force the door open and he can escape.
