Boiling Ink is a crossover between The Owl House and Splatoon. The concept of the story is that, working with the Collector, Belos tries to make a new portal door, but something goes wrong and the worlds are cut off from each other. For the Isles, it's just under two weeks, but on Earth every one of those thirteen days is a thousand years. And then, right after the portal starts working again, an Octoling girl steps through...

  • Adaptational Badass: Luz in this universe is an Octoling who has participated in Turf Wars, so she has skills and gear that the canon Luz never had (especially in regards to her Octoling abilities).
  • Adaptational Species Change: Luz goes from a human to an Octoling in this AU, as does her family, and the other Earth characters similarly are replaced by evolved sea life.
  • All for Nothing: While Belos himself is unaware of it, his plot to return to humanity after killing everyone on the Boiling Isles is doomed to fail as humanity has long gone extinct and Inklings and Octolings are the dominant species on Earth now and, considering they know next to nothing about human history, wouldn't care about anything he had to say.
  • Dramatic Irony: When Eda asks Luz about humans, she briefly considers the legends of the sapient race that ruled the world before the Mollusk Era, but rejects the possibility due to the timeframes not matching up. Unbeknownst to her, humans are the Precursors of the Inklings and Octolings, Belos's portal attempt having caused a Year Inside, Hour Outside situation.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Luz and Eda do one in Chapter 12, in an attempt to feel out their respective abilities, and maybe figure out more glyphs. Eda ends up barely able to move in Luz's octopus form, while Luz has somewhat better control with Eda's magic, but isn't successful at finding any new glyphs.
  • Kill It with Water: As in Splatoon canon, water is a major weakness for Octolings like Luz.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Eda and Luz do a "Freaky Friday" Flip like in canon, but for experimental purposes.
  • Last of His Kind: Assuming that Belos still counts as human, he's now the last known one alive due to the Year Inside, Hour Outside disruption causing humanity to go extinct on Earth before the portal started working again.
  • Point of Divergence: Things diverge from canon a couple of weeks before the story would have canonically started, as an attempt by Belos and the Collector to create a new portal door disrupts the temporal alignment between Earth and the Demon Realm.
  • Translator Microbes: To get around the fact that neither she or Luz can speak each other's language, Eda gives her a necklace that can translate what they’re saying and make it so that the other can understand what the other is saying for them.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Thanks to Belos's failed attempt to make a new portal door with the Collector, time between the Human Realm and Demon Realm becomes temporarily disjointed, with 13,000 years passing on Earth while only thirteen days pass in the Isles.
