Between the Beats
is an Amphibia fanfiction written by justburnitwithfire and the first in his Passing Place for the Soul series. The Fic takes place after the Season 3 episode Turning Point and focuses on Sasha and Grime putting together the Wartwood resistance, while Sasha grapples with trying to be a better person, grappling with her feelings for Anne and getting to know the Wartwood residents that make up her new resistance during the 3 months Anne and the Plantars spent on Earth.
The sequel, Worthy Of Your Heart, began publishing on June 6, 2022. It focuses on the period of time after Anne and the Plantars returned.
Between the Beats contains examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: More or less the entire point of the fic, focusing on events that occurred entirely off-screen during the actual show.
- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: A fair amount of the fic focuses on Sasha's guilt and regrets over her actions during the show.
- Angry Collar Grab: How Sasha reacts when Bog tells her about the events of Toad Tax and having Fens break Anne's arm.
- Ascended Extra: Several of the Wartwoodians play a much bigger role in this fic then they did in the show, including some who only made short, cameo appearances in the show's third season.
- The Atoner: Sasha
- Berserk Button: Bog steps on Sasha's when he talks about having Fens break Anne's arm during the episode Toad Tax.
- Catapult Nightmare: How Sasha wakes up from her last nightmare shown in the fic.
- Cliffhanger: Chapter 6 ends with Sasha being poisoned.
- Clothing Damage: Sasha's toad army armour takes a beating over the story, necessitating it be replaced by the outfit she wears in latter half of Season 3 midway through the story.
- Converse with the Unconscious: Sasha wakes up in the middle of Grime doing this to her after she first passed out from being poisoned.
- Dark Reprise: After Grime gives Sasha the guitar Anne had used during the battle of the bands, she uses it to play a much sadder version of No Big Deal focusing on all the things she's done wrong and everything she's lost.
- Drowning My Sorrows: What Sasha initially plans on doing when she comes to believe that nothing romantic could ever happen between her and Anne. After spending some time thinking on it and how her parents and Grime have used alcohol to cope in the past, she ultimately chooses to avert this trope.
- Everyone Can See It: While not exactly everyone, quite a few characters notice and point out Sasha's obvious feelings for Anne.
- Forgotten Birthday: During a conversation with Ivy, Sasha realizes that she had forgotten her own birthday, which would have been around the time that she and Grime came to Wartwood.
- The Ghost: Anne, Marcy, and the Plantars (mainly Sprig) are mentioned throughout the fic, but never appear in person due to the time frame the story takes place in. At least, not until the last chapter, which is from Anne's perspective and takes place a few days after she and the Plantars returned to Amphibia
- Guilt-Induced Nightmare: Sasha has several throughout her time in Wartwood.
- In Love with the Mark: How Mrs. Croaker met her late husband, who she was originally ordered to assassinate during her time as a spy before falling in love with him and running off to Wartwood together.
- It's All My Fault: Sasha starts displaying this attitude towards Marcy being stabbed after a poison induced nightmare, thinking that she could have done some other action to prevent her being stabbed.
- The Medic: Felicia Sundew takes this role in the resistance, and is perfectly happy to invoke DoctorsOrders on both Sasha and Grime.
- Precious Photo: The photo of Anne, Sasha and Marcy that each of the girls has a copy of, just like in canon. Sasha ends up losing her copy when she runs into Mrs. Craokers burning house to save Archie.
- Rebel Leader: The Fic explores how Sasha became the leader of the Wartwood rebellion, and her early days in the role.
- Ruder and Cruder: Downplayed, as the story mostly sticks to the type of language the show uses, but does slip in some slightly more adult language now and again.
- Save the Jerk: While she hesitates about it Sasha ultimately saves Bog from being eaten by a Heron
- Scrapbook Story: The fic uses a journal being written by Sasha as a framing device between scenes depicting the actual events of the story. The last chapter reveals that someone snuck it into Anne's belongings when she got back, and she had been the one reading the journal entries
- Shipper on Deck: Both Ivy and Mrs. Croaker are encouraging towards Sasha's crush on Anne.
- Sleep Cute: How the fic ends, with Anne going into Sasha's quarters and asking to sleep next to her while trying to grapple with her feelings after readings Sasha's journal
- Surprise Party: New Wartwood ends up organizing one for Sasha's birthday shortly after Ivy learns that Sasha had forgotten her own birthday happened earlier in the story.
- Tears of Joy: Sasha breaks into these when she sees the surprise party New Wartwood threw for her.
- Wham Line: Sasha's journal entry that ends chapter 6.So it turns out that I was poisoned.
