All God's Little Creatures
is a Sherlock Holmes fanfic by KCS.
Watson, coming home wet and tired from a day of work, encounters two Baker Street Irregulars, Bert and Alfie. When the doctor invites them inside to warm up before going home, he has no idea what else he has invited in.
This work includes examples of the following tropes:
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Unable to convince the boys to take the kittens away, Sherlock hits on the idea of sending them to Mycroft. The younger Holmes claims his brother deserves it for sending him on a wild goose chase recently just to test his suitability for a certain type of office and gleefully contemplates the chaos likely to result from having four different colors of fur spread all over Mycroft's apartment.
- Catch Your Death of Cold: It is rather wet outside when Watson runs into Bert and Alfie, and the flu has been going around, so he invites them in. He namedrops the trope when Alfie resists his efforts to take Alfie's wet coat.
- Death Glare: Watson gives the Irregulars a stern, parental-style look when he finally realizes they're hiding something and forces them to explain what's going on.
- Death of a Child: An animal variant. Alfie and Bert explain that they caught another kid, Ratter, and his gang being mean to a group of new kittens; Ratter meant to kill them all because of how noisy they were and he succeeded with one of the kittens before the two Irregulars fought him and escaped with the rest.
- Evil Cannot Stand Cuteness: Downplayed; Holmes isn't evil, but he is often a jerk. Watson and the boys immediately hide the kittens when they hear him coming in, because Holmes isn't fond of fuzzy animals.
- Eye Scream: Bert punched Ratter in the eye for killing one of the kittens.
- Food as Bribe: Bert, not being as familiar with Watson, resists being pushed through the door of 221 Baker Street, but Alfie makes him stop by saying that the doctor will give them some cocoa.
- Noodle Incident: While Holmes is trying to convince the boys that the house isn't animal-friendly, Watson mentions a previous incident involving his bulldog pup about which he's still mad at Holmes.
- Open Heart Dentistry: Downplayed. Alfie asks Watson if he can help a hurt kitten. Watson notes that to a boy, all doctors probably seem alike. The wound is such that Watson can fix it, despite not being a veterinarian.
- Secret Pet Plot: Downplayed. The secret gets out before very long, but the fic starts with Alfie and Bert smuggling some kittens they rescued into 221 Baker Street in their clothing. For several minutes, they manage to hide it from Watson, but then the kittens become too loud to conceal. When Holmes arrives, the doctor and the boys try to hide the kittens again, but one of them gives the game away by walking Alfie's hat across the room.
- Significant Green-Eyed Redhead: Alfie, one of the Irregulars who plays a major role in the fic (and other significant roles in other fics written by the same author), is a redhead with green eyes.
- Tender Tears: Alfie tears up when remembering that he and Bert were too late to save one of the kittens.
- Unusual Pets for Unusual People: Watson notes early on that Holmes doesn't like animals much besides some reptiles and after his younger brother sends the kittens to him, Mycroft Holmes sends him a piranha in return.
- Your Tomcat Is Pregnant: Downplayed. One of the boys holds out an injured kitten to Watson, asking the doctor to "fix him." Watson notes immediately that the kitten is actually a girl.
