Go To

Adventures of the Super Mario Bros is an ongoing Super Mario Bros. fanfic written by Nintendoman01.

The fic is an AU taking cues from all over the Mario mythos. Through multiple arcs, it will cover all the mainstream games of the Mario series, starting with the original Super Mario Bros.

Adventures of the Super Mario Bros provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Absurdly Long Stairway: Inverted when Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach go down the long staircase leading to Subcon.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Also combined with Adaptation Relationship Overhaul. In stark contrast to the original Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Junior games, Mario doesn't own Cranky Kong as a pet and he doesn't lock him up, instead helping him and his grandson Donkey Kong III (DK for short) return to their home when they escape from the zoo.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Mario sometimes calls his Luigi "Lu" for short.
    • Mary Pat is sometimes known as "Mips" or "MP".
  • Answer Cut: After Kamek and Kammy Koopa produce the Heart Container for Bowser, the Koopa King shouts, "NOW WHO'S GONNA STOP MEEEEE?!". Then we cut to Mario and friends arriving at Frappé Snowland.
  • Decomposite Character: Mario's dislike of mushrooms and initial lack of competence from the movie are given to his sister Mary Pat.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Birdo prefers to be called Birdie, having changed into a woman from a man per their backstory.
  • Dream Tells You to Wake Up: At the end of the second arc, Hassan and Amani tell Mario to wake up as the means to go home from Subcon.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Bowser may be a Card-Carrying Villain, but even he gets mad at Kamek for using Lame Brain on Mary Pat out of morbid lust for vengeance towards Mario and Luigi. The only reason Kamek is spared the full extent of Bowser's wrath is that he's the closest thing to an actual father Bowser had.
  • Genre Savvy/Wrong Genre Savvy: Mary Pat zigzags between these two tropes. On the one hand, she quickly realizes that she's Trapped in Another World, and that Bowser is the villain. However, given that Bowser is a family man and treated her well, she ends up fully trusting them. As it turns out, Kamek has none of the redeeming qualities Bowser has.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Mario slaps Luigi when the latter panics about the fact that they may not find their way back to Brooklyn.
Luigi: How are you so calm about this, Mario?! We're literally on another planet, and we have no idea how to get home!
Mario: And losing our cool and panicking isn't gonna help us find a solution.
Luigi: I think I'm entitled to a little panicking, Mario! (Mario slaps him across the cheek)
Mario: Get ahold of yourself, bro.
    Luigi: Thanks. I needed that.
  • A God Am I: Before battling Mario and Co., Wart states how the Dream Machine makes him powerful enough to dictate everything.
Wart: Through the power of the Dream Machine, I am all-powerful. Here, I make the rules. Here, I make the threats. Here, I... am... God.
  • Gratuitous German: Similar to Mary Pat, Ludwig is fluent in German, and sometimes speaks in that language. Unlike with Mary Pat, however, there's no heritage involved.
  • Gratuitous Italian: Mary Pat is fluent in Italian, given her family's heritage, and sometimes slips into that language. One of these instances was her calling Peach a whore. Thankfully, it was only because of the Lame Brain amplifying her negative feelings.
  • HA HA HA—No: In the beginning of the third arc, Bowser's response to Froswald's question about whether or not he will yield is a chuckle followed by "I do not", before burning the penguins' castle with his fire breath.
  • Hollywood Mirage: While traversing the Sands of Slumber, Mario runs toward what appears to be an oasis, but instead falls face-first into a sand dune.
  • Hope Spot: Mary Pat manages to escape a horde of Dry Bones after fleeing and barricading herself in an abandoned castle. Then, as she breathes a sigh of relief, she's knocked out by a group of Shy Guys and a Snifit.
  • Ice Palace: The penguins led by King Froswald III live in a castle made of ice. Bowser destroys it easily with his fire breath.
  • Lady Swearsalot: Mary Pat.
  • Mugged for Disguise: In Chapter 8, Mario, Luigi, Parakarry, and Toad beat up four Koopatrols and don their armor to sneak into what they thought was Bowser's Castle.
  • Neck Lift: Wart grabs a Shy Guy minion by the neck when the former finds out about Mario and Co. arriving at Subcon.
  • Never Say "Die": Pretty much every character uses the Game Over euphemism for referencing death.
  • Original Character:
    • Mary Pat is Mario and Luigi's little sister. She is used by the Koopa Troop to humiliate her siblings and teach them about forgetting their family. That is until Kamek doses her with Lame Brain to kill them.
    • Tiana is a Subcon fairy who accompanies Mario and Co. on their adventure in the second arc.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Luigi loses it before Mario and friends can go to Clawgrip's warehouse, angered that Mario doesn't listen to him when warned about something dangerous.
  • Reference Overdosed: There's so many pop culture references in almost every chapter that it's hard to keep track of.
  • Rump Roast:
    • Mario's butt gets burned by Tryclyde's fireball attack.
    • At one point in Chapter 10, Mario falls from an elevator lift into the lava pit, leaping out with his butt on fire again.
  • Sound-Effect Bleep: With Mary Pat being a Lady Swearsalot, it's somewhat of a Running Gag that whenever she cusses, something conveniently rings. The only time it didn't happen (when she called Peach a whore while under the effects of the Lame Brain), it was a Foreign Cuss Word.
  • Tampering with Food and Drink: Kamek slips Lame Brain potion into cups of tea that he provides Mary Pat with to kill Mario and Luigi.
  • Third-Person Person: Yoshi.
