- Actionized Sequel: "A Troublesome Charge" is a humorous character-focused piece. Its sequel, Ghost Roads, is a more straightforward adventure.
- After Action Patch Up:
- Lan Xichen helps Nie Minglin with some minor injuries she's picked up on a Night Hunt.
- Lan Sizhui heals an injured Jin Ling in Ghost Roads, even fixing a curse mark.
- The Atoner: Nie Minglin, for the sins in her past life. Lan Xichen tries telling her she doesn't have to be, seeing as that was a past life, but she still struggles with it.

- Nie Minglin's first meeting with Lan Xichen involves their hands brushing during a salute ceremony, just as Meng Yao's first meeting did.
- Nie Minglin ends up falling down a staircase. She manages to stop herself before she ends up too far down this time, at least.
- Jin Ling's proposal to Lan Sizhui parallels Wei Wuxian's love confession to Lan Wangji pretty closely: it comes at an inopportune moment, while they are in the presence of several others, notably Lan Xichen and the reincarnation of Jin Guangyao. Based on her reaction, she notices the parallel.

- Strong Family Resemblance: Jin Ling has picked up on Jiang Cheng's mannerisms as he's gotten older, including restless pacing and threatening to break loved ones' legs.
