Fanfic / A New Hope (Final Fantasy VII)

Go To

A New Hope is a Final Fantasy VII drama fic that was published on Fanfiction.net by Toshi-Ama in 2006. It takes place in an Alternate Universe where the main characters live in the real world, and have different personalities, backstories, and problems. The fic can be found here.

Needless to say, it has nothing to do with the famous movie that has the same words in the title. If you're looking for an index of Star Wars fan works, check here.

Tropes present in this fanfic:

  • Abusive Parents: Sephiroth was one of these towards his son Cloud. Some of his instances of abuse towards him include locking him in a bathroom after pouring bleach and ammonia into the toilet (as punishment for him not washing the dishes to a level he deemed satisfactory), withholding his arena winnings from him, and, most importantly, MURDERING HIS MOTHER RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM! In fact, his sons Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo are so disgusted by his treatment of Cloud that they form an orphanage, which eventually gains government recognition, to try to prevent further instances of this trope.
  • Attempted Rape: Zack did this to Aerith. Twice. The first time was a case of Slipping a Mickey (date rape), while the second time he tried to assault her in a dark alley. Thankfully, neither attempt was successful.
  • Babies Ever After: This happens to three couples: Cloud and Aerith, Leon and Yuffie, and Tifa and Reno.
  • Bad Boss: Luke, who owns the laundromat that Cloud works at, is one of these. He admonishes him for missing two weeks of work due to being in the hospital, and threatens to fire him if he doesn't show up for work the next day. But Cloud, being the Extreme Doormat that he is, puts up with it.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Leon has one of these for his sister Aerith. It's so strong that he filed a restraining order against Zack, and threatened to kill him if he ever does anything to Aerith. Of course, it doesn't stop him from trying a second time.
  • Blatant Lies: Leon tells the doctor taking off Cloud's bandages that the scars on his neck and back were the result of him accidentally falling on a cactus during a vacation in New Mexico.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Cloud coughs up blood during his first dinner at the Leonhart residence, Foreshadowing the discovery of his brain tumor.
  • Blood-Splattered Wedding Dress: Cloud gets attacked by Sephiroth after his and Aerith's wedding, causing his tuxedo to be covered in blood. After he's rushed to the hospital, a Flatline Plotline is triggered. Thankfully, he gets better.
  • Born in an Elevator: Cloud and Aerith's daughter Skylar.
  • Break Her Heart to Save Her: After Cloud is diagnosed with a brain tumor, he runs away from his new friends to avoid burdening them, which causes Aerith to become depressed. Luckily, he comes back after getting the surgery money from Sephiroth.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Overlaps with Belligerent Sexual Tension. Cloud finds himself hesitant to tell Aerith that he loves her, but he eventually tells her the old-fashioned way: having sex with her.
  • Caught with Your Pants Down: When Cloud catches Zack trying to rape Aerith in the dark alley, the former is only wearing his boxers. Then a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown ensues.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Cloud invokes this trope to convince Sephiroth to pay for his brain tumor removal surgery. Specifically, he tells him that he can't fight if he only has a few days to live.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Cloud responds to the news announcer asking him if Aerith is his wife by sarcastically telling her that she's actually the king of Spain's wife, and that she's cheating on her husband with him. The reporter even falls for it for a few minutes.
  • Easily Impressed: Cloud is mystified by a television in the Leonhart residence. Justified by the fact that he's been treated like a caged animal for 20 years.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo become good after Sephiroth stiffed them for the first and last time. They rub it in his face by starting up a government-funded orphanage.
  • Great Escape: Sephiroth was put in prison for human trafficking and running an illegal fight club, but was somehow able to escape. He gets locked up for good in the end, though.
  • Laser-Guided Karma:
    • Zack gets punished for trying to rape Aerith by being evicted from his apartment, and threatened with a life sentence in prison if he ever attempts sexual assault again.
    • Sephiroth gets a life sentence in a maximum security prison as punishment for his crimes.
