A Choker And A Scalpel
is a short Young Justice (2010) based fanfic.
The story revolves around Black Canary, or more specifically the choker that Black Canary wears. At age nine she tried to cut out her vocal cords. It didn't go as planned and she was left with a scar as a constant reminder of that day.
This fanfic provides examples of:
- Adaptation Dye-Job: Black Canary has naturally black hair in the comics and only dyed it as an adult. The fic implies she's a natural blonde when it's mentioned that at seven she was a blonde.
- Artistic License – Biology: Used in-universe. As a kid, Dinah tried to cut out her vocal cords. Being only nine, and having a F in biology at that, Dinah didn't know where her vocal cords were actually located. She cut the wrong spot but luckily her mom caught her before she could do anything worse than leave a permanent scar.
- Covered with Scars: It's mentioned that Dinah has a lot of scars as an adult. It comes with being a superhero.
- Elective Mute: After accidentally screeching and hurting the ears of several of her classmates, Dinah stopped talking from age seven to twelve. She stopped her vow of silence to save her mother using her supersonic scream.
- One-Steve Limit: Dinah's mother is unnamed, likely because they share the same name.
