- "Twin Fics". The premise is simple. Since Tsuna, an only child, is the only blood heir of the Vongola Famiglia, what would happen if he had a twin? In those fanfics, almost invariably:
- Tsuna will be the oldest twin.
- The other twin will always be a boy named Ieyasu (after his ancestor) or some play on Natsu (following typical Japanese naming conventions).
- They are fraternal twins, with the other twin taking after their father.
- The other twin is popular, a Chick Magnet talented, athletic, good grades etc. Hana (the Only Sane Woman in all of the KHR fanfic world), Kyoko, Ryohei, Yamamoto, and Hibari are the only ones not attracted to his charm.
- Tsuna forms a tight-knit circle of friends with the above individuals.
- He bullies Tsuna relentlessly, frequently to the point of causing permanent physical and psychological trauma.
- Their father Iemitsu is blind to the bullying, and may even egg it on. Otherwise, he ignores Tsuna because he's preoccupied with the twin (whenever he's home, at any rate).
- Their mother Nana is either indifferent and maybe abusive towards Tsuna, or she's the only bright spot in his life.
- The other twin is chosen as the next Vongola heir.
- Once he arrives, Reborn doesn't take long to realize that the twin is or will be too morally corrupt to steer Vongola in the direction Nono (the current boss) wants and will turn his attention to Tsuna.
- The twin will be less talented in flame manipulation than Tsuna, and he will get his Guardians through bribes, blackmail, shallow bonds, or poor judgment.
- There are few variations where the other twin is kind and supportive to Tsuna and ultimately either abdicate the position of heir for Tsuna or Tsuna taking the position so his twin won't have to, but the most common variants are spoken above, where the other twin is popular, relentlessly bullies Tsuna and was the initially preferred heir, only to end up being The Poorly Chosen One down the line that eventually led to Tsuna being crowned the true heir.
- Female Tsuna, a.k.a. "Tsunahime" fanfics. Probably because there are far too few female members in the Cast Full of Pretty Boys, and Tsuna has the most feminine looks of them all. Tsuna will rarely be a girl at the beginning of the story. 90% of the time, this results in a Reverse Harem.
- Hacker!Tsuna. The gist is this: Tsuna is secretly an extremely talented hacker who works in secret and finds out about the Mafia and his father's involvement in it years before canon. Tsuna will become a Red Baron in the criminal community and once Reborn arrives he'll try to hide his identity and avoid becoming the next Vongola Boss for as long as possible.
- Time Travel fics. Those are:
- The 10th generation meets the 1st, either by going back in time or accidentally bringing them forward. Usually used for slapstick comedy.
- Tsuna goes back in time after the end of the story (or whichever point the author is at) to before canon and gets a chance to fix things.
- The 10 Years Later fanfics - the gang will travel to the future like in canon, but this time things will be different.
- The future arc means that the Reborn! (2004) Kink Meme is filled with age-specific pairing fics such as TYL!(10 Years Later)Xanxus with 14!Squalo. Kinda justified with the Adults!Acrobalenos if you want to avoid the ick factor.
- Kid!Fics are very popular stories in the fandom, usually caused by the Ten-year bazooka to send the protagonists to the past. AU fics about the First Generation Vongola family adopting or are the blood relations of the Tenth Generation are equally popular.
- The 10th generation are the Reincarnation of the first, and they have the memories too. This is implied to be the case in canon, so they're not too far-fetched. Naturally, things derail.
- Nana Sawada is heir to some mystic legacy that claims Tsuna before the Mafia. This is usually something supernatural.
- One of the most popular fanfiction ideas is stories centering around a Namimori Middle School Reunion, which usually involves everyone who used to bully Tsuna getting one hell of a shock when they find out that the scrawny idiot that they're familiar with is now a handsome, successful adult.
- Another variant to the "classmates learn that Tsuna is a badass" fics is the class trip to Italy, which is usually organized by Reborn. Everyone has to deal with the insanity that is the Vongola famiglia, while Tsuna is totally freaking out.
- Byakuran and Soichi send Tsuna - or his memories - to an alternative reality. Those exist in canon, but successful transfer... does not. Needless to say, prepare for canon derailment.
- There are fics that often re-characterize many of the female characters in the series to be BAMF. Though these fics are often very niche and can borderline on OOC.
- Tsuna becoming very talented in some extracurricular activities like dancing, drawing, music, etc. He usually builds a circle of friends, which Reborn will definitely think of as his guardians, long before the series' start. Reborn will invariably think how utterly useless Iemitsu and his informants are for giving him so inaccurate intel.
- Like Naruto, there are nail fics where Tsuna got help from a random crossover character of choice/an OC. Making him a bit better than canon by the time the story starts.
- Tsuna killing for the first time as a mafia boss, and becoming a Broken Pedestal to his guardians isn't as common as twin fics, but still there. This usually causes the guardians to think that the Tsuna they know is long gone, eventually abandoning Tsuna in the process. Though this contradicts canon because Tsuna's first technical kill was Byakuran during the future arc and in the underground world like the Mafia, killing is inevitable in one way or another.
