Fan Nickname / The King of Fighters

Go To

Sometimes, some moves and/or characters stick out more with the names the fans give them over the years.

Characters

  • In order to differentiate Kyo from his clones, fans often refer to his NESTS depiction as "Shin Kyo" (as in "True Kyo").
    • In Japan, the clones Kyo-1 and Kyo-2 are known as Mero and Hoki after their respective favorite foods (two different kinds of fish), while Kusanagi is abbreviated to Nagi.
  • Fathena or Athiccna for Athena's appearance in XII and XIII: Moeness and chubby legs.
  • Kim is sometimes nicknamed as The Beijing King, thanks to the My Way Entertainment fan dub of one of the Fatal Fury OVAs.
  • Chang and Choi are sometimes referred to as "Tom and Jerry".
  • Adelheid is mostly known in Spanish-speaking communities as RugalitoEnglish .
  • Cheesenitz and Goenadz for Goenitz himself, thanks in part to his tendency to spam his Yonokaze in any of his appearances (most especially in his KOF '96 iteration).
  • Geese is usually called Geeser the Cheeser and Geeseter Bunnie.
  • Due to having the most tournament wins in KOF canon (as well as his tendency to be on the Hero team in every saga in some capacitynote ), Benimaru is sometimes jokingly called the LeBron James of KOF.
  • Much like Ash In-Universe, many a player has also referred to his sororal figure, Elisabeth Blanctorche, as "Betty" (or alternatively, "Liz") for short.
  • K9999 is obviously known as the "Tetsuo of KOF" as well as Tetsuo9999, being very popular in South America. Even in M.U.G.E.N there's a version of him with dialogs directly ripped from the movie and new moves that resembled AKIRA, called as "Another K9999." More or less still applies to his alter ego Krohnen in KOF XV, since they're the same character.
    • The same fans rejected Nameless as his replacement, calling him nicknames like KOF Sasuke Uchiha or NESTS Emo Teen as others.
  • Ash, being the Base-Breaking Character that he is, has no shortage of them - derogatory or otherwise:
    • There's Ass Crimson, if you hated his guts. Or Ass Crapson, Fish Crimsonnote , or Fist Crimson. Then there's Ashley Crishit and Ash Shitson for really vulgar examples.
      • Of course, most of these would eventually become discredited after the events of XIII, as well as for his eventual return in XV.
    • On a lighter note, he's often referred to as the Guile of KOF. And for good reason given both characters' similar gameplan as well as the fact that they mainly use Charge Input Specials. As such, Ventose and Nivose are often called "Sonic Boom" and "Flash Kick", respectively.
  • Chuuni for Shun'ei in XIV due both to his design giving off vibes of the stereotypical chuunibyou teenager and the similarity of his name to the term.
  • Meitenkun on the other hand is often called "Sleepy Boy (or Boi)" for obvious reasons.
  • Due to an unfortunate case of Pop-Cultural Osmosis as the character hasn't been seen in a fighting game for 25 years, in XV Yashiro Nanakase has been given the nickname of "Dancing Urien" or "Dancing Bryan Fury". This is despite the fact that Yashiro predates Urien by at least a few months.note
  • Mongolia - Maxima, with one of his normal moves being a Mongolian Chop. It's from the Japanese M.U.G.E.N community where they call him such due to parody videos involving him doing that move a lot.

Moves

  • "Bodega"note  for Kyo's Aragami/Dokugami series of Rekkas. Sometimes even Kyo himself is called as such.
  • Iori's Ge Shiki Yuriori (Back plus Light Kick while airborne) cross-up is likewise called the "taco".note
  • Yuri's parody of the Shun Goku Satsu, the Yuri Chou Enbu, is sometimes called the Shin Yuri Satsu.
  • Ralf's Neo MAX from XIII has been christened as the MAN retsuken (a play on Ryo's Zanretsuken), due to the overflowing abundance of GAR.
  • Robert's Hien Shippu Ryuujin Kyaku Neo MAX is alternatively called Robert Garcia's Pro Skater XIII and Rider Kick.
  • Geese Howard's Raging Storm DM has the nickname of "The Pretzel" due to the move's absurd input command that was made that convoluted just for the sake of nostalgia.
  • Rugal's Dead End Screamer (which he only ever had in KOF '98) is dubbed by the M.U.G.E.N community as the "Rugalspin" for a rather self-explanatory reason when you see the move for yourself.
  • The Goenitzpin, another meme spawned in the wake of the Rugalspin thanks to his new HSDM/MAX2 in 2002: Unlimited Match.
  • Krauserspin or Gigatech Cyclone for Krauser's Gigantic Cyclone SDM. Again, blame M.U.G.E.N.
  • Clone Zero's Mabu Kousou (or Satan's Red Rage depending on the translation) is also known more infamously as the "Zero Fart". Look at the move for yourself and you'll know exactly why.
  • Shingo's notebook full of information on his techniques has been known as both the Death Note and GameFAQs thanks to his HSDM in 2002: Unlimited Match (and also his Taunt back in '98).
  • Due to its visual effects looking like he's swimming in the stuff (and really, most of his fire effects in XV giving this impression), Ash's Sans-culottes (and by extension, Espoir, his new Climax Super) has been dubbed the Mountain Dew explosion.
    • Maxima's in a similar boat, with his lasers instead being dubbed the Mountain Dew Baja Blast!

Teams

Even some teams, custom or otherwise, gain fan nicknames, too.
  • From XIV (and also XV), we have "Team My Two Daddies", made up of Rock Howard, Terry Bogard and Geese Howard.
  • In XV, with Luong replacing Seth/Ramon as the third member of the Secret Agents team alongside Mary and Vanessa, a myriad of nicknames for this team have ranged from, "Team Heidern's Angels" to references to Totally Spies!, to "Team MILF", among others.
  • With Athena, Mai and Yuri teaming together as the Super Heroine team in XV, fans have given them the nicknames "Team Athena And Friends" and "Team Yuri And Friends", referencing Saigado's (in)famous doujinshi series.

Other

  • Yaoiori for Iori, thanks to all of his Ho Yay with Kyo. The infamous "Yagami is I'm-a-gay backwards" joke didn't help in this regard; his tendency of throwing out ambiguously gay lines in his special intros with Kyo probably helped even less. This is teased to no end by various official/fan works.

Rugalspin your way back to the YMMV page here! HAHAHAHAHA!!!
