Early Installment Weirdness / Uncanny X-Men

Go To

  • The X-men are very popular in their early appearances, despite acting like jackasses around soldiers and civilians alike.
  • Bobby (Iceman) and Jean Grey are often considered/referred to as the weakest members of the team.
  • Professor X preforms Mindwipes on a weekly basis.
    • Worse yet, he removes all memories from Bobby's parents concerning Bobby's mutant powers. Yeah, that sure turned out great.
  • Magneto acts like an actual Nazi. Special mention goes to forcing the Scarlet Witch to try to seduce Namor.
  • For that matter, Magneto's treatment of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver can come off as very odd, seeing how they were later retconned to be his children.
  • Some of Claremont's early issues have telepaths able to damage the Sentinels. The robotic, entirely non-organic Sentinels.
  • Wolverine's exact deal hadn't been worked out in the early days, so it takes a while before we start hearing him talking about his healing factor, or his adamantium skeleton. In the very early issues, it's hinted that his claws are the extent of his powers, nothing more.
  • In issue 110, Warhawk is established to be working for some nebulous, evil "master." The first issue of the Dark Phoenix Saga reveals that it's Emma Frost, but the dialogue in issue 110 doesn't exactly jibe with Emma's characterization under Claremont (the fact there was a good several years between issue 110 and Emma's first appearance might have something to do with that).
  • Silver age Magneto's power of "magnetism" apparently does whatever you want it to do, including but not limited to:
    • Sealing up holes in ice... Magnetically!
    • Creating invisible barriers (of magnetism, not metal) that can tie soldiers up... Magnetically!
    • Draining the life out of Iceman... Magnetically!
    • Hypnotizing people... Magnetically!
    • Tanking Cyclops's Optic blasts... Magnetically!
    • Resisting Jean Grey's Telekinesis... Magnetically!
    • Resisting Phoenix's attempt to kill him... Magnetically! (Oh come on!)
    • Removing Professor X's Mindwipe of the Blob... Magnetically!
    • Creating an astral projection of himself... Magnetically!
      • Also doubles as a psychic projection of himself, apparently.
  • Iceman's ice powers have a similar problem:
    • In issue two he freezes two gloves. That is not to say he merely covers them in ice — he turns one into solid ice and the other into ice-cubes.
    • Speed-seeking ice grenades!
Narration: "Just as the missiles were attracted to Angel's body heat, the Iceman's ice grenades were attracted to the missiles' speed!"
    • Then there's this...
Bobby: "Quick freezing liquid ice will slow you down!"
