  • It's common for annual sports titles to remove players from the game if they've retired or face legal issues which prevent them from participating in the league that year.
  • Kobe Bryant was removed from Backyard Basketball 2004 shortly before release because of his sexual assault case. Some data related to him is still in the code of at least the PC version.
  • The Football Manager series, due to licensing issues, cannot use real players or teams in some cases (such as the Japanese leagues, Chinese national team and, infamously, Oliver Kahn). However, the unlicensed content is altered by simple text files, the removal of which adds them back into the game.
  • Until version 1.6, MacSki contained an advertisement for its creators' most famous game, TaskMaker. The advertisement was removed in later versions, but the "TaskMaker." voice clip can still be found if you open the program with ResEdit.
  • The iPhone port of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 did not let players make their own skaters, unlike the original versions. However, looking in the app files reveals that many textures used by custom skaters are still in the data.
    • THPS3 was to have a level set in Paris, exclusive to the Gamecube release. It was never formally implemented, but files for it remain on the game.
