Die For Our Ship / Ace Attorney

Because of the franchise's prolific kink meme and very, very strong LGBT Fanbase, its fans are prone to engage in courtroom-drama level arguments over which characters should kiss each other.

  • Maya Fey used to be seen as a threat by Phoenix/Miles shippers before the original trilogy finished. Her cousin, Pearl Fey also gets a ton of flack from them because she is a Shipper on Deck for Phoenix and Maya. Pearl often dies in fan cases (due to nearly every case involving murder) or gives up on her shipping preferences to match the author's tastes. Even though her reason for shipping Phoenix and Maya is because she witnessed nothing but unhappy marriages due to growing up as a daughter of Kurain. This is in spite of the fact that in-story, she eventually denounces said shipping of her own accord.
  • Following Trials and Tribulations, Iris has taken Maya's place as the biggest threat to shippers. Only this time, she has the dubious honour of uniting both Phoenix/Miles and Phoenix/Maya shippers in their hatred. And their grievances are far more justified. Iris impersonated her sister, Dahlia, and entered a relationship with Phoenix to keep her Evil Twin from committing more crimes. Phoenix believed that his ex-girlfriend was a deceitful killer, but in reality the nice girl and the deceitful killer were two different people. Iris, throughout Trials and Tribulations wants to atone for being an accomplice in her sister's schemes and still loves Phoenix in spite of knowing they can't be together. Even though she is never seen again after the original trilogy, she left a strong enough impression to be deeply disliked by her detractors long afterwards. If she isn't written out of the narrative entirely, most fanfiction has Iris gracefully step aside upon knowing about Phoenix' new relationship, be an Extreme Doormat who can only do what Dahlia tells her to do, or at absolute worst, be just as evil as her sister.
  • Phoenix himself is subject to this treatment by Miles/Gumshoe and Miles/Lang shippers. The fact that Miles was his motivation to become an attorney to begin with is used as grounds to twist him into a Stalker with a Crush, a Dogged Nice Guy who can't stand that Miles is dating a bad boy (Lang) or moron (Gumshoe) instead of him, or in more extreme cases, as an obsessive Yandere who sees Miles as his property due to their childhood friendship. This is done in order to prop up Gumshoe and/or Lang as a healthier and more wholesome option for Miles, who should date someone who was "always there for him" instead of a "creep" like Phoenix.
  • Mia/Lana shippers often distort Diego Armando, aka Godot, into a Straw Misogynist who wanted Mia solely for her looks. This is because he defaults to calling her pet names except in dramatic moments, and because he called Franziska a "filly who needs to be put in her place". This is in spite of the fact that in-canon, his love for Mia is part of his villainous motivation, and multiple characters have called out Franziska for her Inferiority Superiority Complex.
  • Leona Clyde from the Takarazuka musical gets a lot of hate for taking the place of several canon characters in Phoenix's life and being his love interest to boot. Of course, much of the shipper hate is mitigated by the wonderful Ho Yay number with Phoenix dancing with/being assaulted by Edgeworth's backup dancer clones.
  • Even Edgeworth is not safe from this. Those who ship Phoenix with anyone else (usually Maya or Iris) tend to cite him disappearing for a year in Justice For All as proof he would be an unhealthy partner for Phoenix, often ignoring his Character Development in this regard and repeating the popular misconception he intentionally faked his suicide even though Word of God has clarified everyone in-universe (including Phoenix) already knew Edgeworth was still alive and that his "chooses death" note was metaphorical.
  • Athena Cykes got this from Klavier/Apollo shippers pretty much the moment her character was revealed pre-release. After Dual Destinies was actually released, some shippers bashed her as a "Mary Sue" and Spotlight-Stealing Squad, the latter of which was not helped by how Klavier got Demoted to Extra in the same game.
  • Juniper Woods having a canon crush on Apollo made her an inevitable target, especially of Klavier/Apollo and Athena/Apollo shippers. While rarely outright demonized, she is sometimes bashed as a "boring" Flat Character whose feelings for Apollo are shallow.
