Being a very popular social media website, Twitter has crashed on several occassions due to specific news stories.

  • During the 2014 Oscars, Ellen DeGeneres took a picture with several other celebs and posted it on Twitter, while urging viewers to make it the most retweeted photo of all time. Sure enough, the pic was retweeted over 3 million times and within half an hour Twitter crashed.
  • Twitter went down for an hour on May 12, 2019 after the announcement of Peggy Lipton's death caused the site to crash.
  • This also happened when Toy Story 4 premiered on June 18, 2019, with too many fans sharing their reactions causing the site to go down, as well as on July 4, 2019, when a 6.7 earthquake hit Los Angeles.
  • On July 11, 2019, Twitter went down for an hour when the soundtrack for The Lion King was released on various music services.
  • The release of the investigation report of Kobe Bryant's helicopter crash, along with the announcement of the death of the Cleveland Browns' mascot Swagger and BTS fans celebrating the anniversary of Jungkook's graduation from high school, caused the server to crash.
  • The announcement of One Direction reuniting on April 9, 2020 caused Twitter to go down for two hours.
  • When it was announced that Rick May, who played Soldier in Team Fortress 2, had died on April 13, 2020, Twitter went down for an hour, while Discord went down for two hours.
  • Twitter went down for two hours on May 17, 2020 due to a combination of the broadcast of of a NASCAR race and the release of the final chapter of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.
  • Twitter went down on June 26th, 2020 due to Kelly Asbury's death, which was justified, as multiple users were reporting on it at once.
  • On July 2, 2020, the deaths of 3 celebrities being reported at once (Bryon Bernstein, Mike Walling and Hugh Downs) caused demand on the server to be overloaded.
  • Twitter also crashed from demand due to the announcements of Hyrule Warriors and the Xbox Series S on September 8, 2020.
  • On October 1, 2020, the site was rendered completely unusable for roughly 15 minutes due to the extreme reaction caused by — of all things — the reveal that Steve was the next playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • Twitter went over capacity on November 20, 2020 because of the release of Animaniacs (2020).
  • On December 30, 2020, a combination of reports for the death of Dawn Wells (well-known for her role as Mary Ann in Gilligan's Island) and Tom Kane (voice of the Professor in The Powerpuff Girls) suffering a stroke caused Twitter to suffer an outage.
  • On February 13, 2021, the report of a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Japan caused Twitter to go over capacity.
  • Twitter crashed on March 4, 2021 due to a combination of the news of BTS becoming the #1 IFPI Global Artist and the release of Attack on Titan's 138th chapter.
  • This happened on both April 16th and 17th of 2021 on Twitter. The first crash was due to a free online BTS concert called Bang Bang Con, while the second was due to Prince Phillip's funeral.
  • On June 30, 2021, Twitter crashed due to the announcement of the death of Donald Rumsfield.
  • Twitter also crashed on September 20, 2021 due to the launch of iOS 15. It would crash again for two hours the next day due to Seungmin of Stray Kids' birthday, and on the following day, it went over capacity due to the announcement of the title of the third Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film.
  • Twitter went down on October 12, 2021 due to Jimin of BTS' birthday.
  • On January 20, 2022, the announcements of NFT avatars for Twitter, a remake of The Aristocats being in development, and a sequel to A Christmas Story crashed the Twitter servers for 30 minutes.
  • On February 11, 2022, the release of One Piece chapter 1040 crashed Twitter.
  • On May 10, 2022, the Twitter servers crashed when the tracklist for the third CD of BTS' Proof series was posted.
  • On July 14, 2022, Twitter went down due to many people posting about a minor earthquake that struck California, the teaser trailer for The Rings of Power and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba fans celebrating Tanjiro Kamado's birthday.
  • Twitter crashed on September 8, 2022 when Queen Elizabeth II's death was announced.
  • On April 21, 2023, Twitter crashed due to the release of SUGA's debut solo album "D-Day".
  • On May 18, 2023, Twitter went down due to the release of the trailer for the NIMONA movie.
