Go To

The World In Four Years is an original unpublished novel based on the life of 14-year-old Mackenzie "Kenzie" Daavettila who is a freshman at Sirencester High School located in Sirencester, Pennsylvania, a fairly rural area and town of 5,000.Kenzie is an average teenager who wants to get over all the rumors that surrounded her in junior high, but a couple people, namely Ricky Pembrook, won't let her forget. Her friends, Torie Cagliostrio and Dahlia Fenceroy, betray her in favor of Torie's abusive relationship with older star football player, delinquent, and overall certified bad boy Levi Khangura. Kenzie slowly loses herself in a crazy freshmen year when she realizes how messed-up people can really be.

This work contains tropes of:

  • Childhood Friend Romance: Subverted. Kenzie and Noel were childhood friends, and Kenzie fell in love with him, but Noel didn't like her back.
  • Dysfunction Junction: The Daavettilas. Also, everybody is much too screwed up for a bunch of 14-year-olds.
  • Everybody Has Lots of Sex: Kenzie is constantly hearing about some new sex scandal at SHS and she herself talks about feeling pressured to be promiscuous to be popular.
  • High School: Most of the characters are in the 9th grade and most of the events take place at Sirencester High School.
  • Junior High: Although no events take place before the 9th grade, all backstory is rooted in middle school.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Basically everyone in Sirencester. Kenzie becomes this, Torie and Dahlia are this because they want to get rid of Kenzie, Ricky is this because Kenzie's existence as a walking reminder of his horribleness is a threat to his popularity. The Daavettillas are this due to their obsession with the nuclear family in that they would do whatever they had to do - to anyone, including their own daughters Kenzie and Carrie, to look good. Levi is this in his emotionally abusive relationship with Torie- should I just stop, now?
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: Sirencester. Discussed by Kenzie, who is so bored of her beginning of high school and wishes something would happen. Then it does.
  • Suburbia: Somewhat. While Sirencester isn't a sidewalk-plagued small town of duplicate homes and obsessively normal families, it's not exactly a farmland. The suburban elements are there, as is the obsessive normalness of the suburbs which deeply affects everyone, but especially Kenzie's family. As the story goes on, Sirencester develops more into an overly perfect suburbia where everyone is virtually a stereotype.

Main Characters

    Kenzie Daavettila
Mackenzie "Kenzie" Alison Daavettila is the daughter of Gerald Daavettila and Kinsley Daavettila. She is the younger sister of Kolbie Daavettila. She is the protagonist of The World In 4 Years. Kenzie was born on May 28, 2003 in New York City, New York, USA, having moved to Sirencester in Pennsylvania, USA at the age of 2. She is a 14-year-old freshman at Sirencester High School.
  • Abusive Parents: Jesus Christ. To plainly say that Kenzie is emotionally and physically abused is an understatement. Mr. Daavettila is a paranoid man with insane anger issues who is obsessed with the image of the 'perfect suburban family', despite that Sirencester isn't even the suburbs. Kenzie's mother is a bipolar, unempathetic, negative woman who is constantly physically abusive to her own husband. After hurting Kenzie, her mom refuses to even get her a bandaid and blames her, and her father threatens her that if she calls the police, he'll frame her and get her put away. Her dad chokes her when he's upset with her and never apologizes, and also doesn't do anything when Kenzie reveals she's suicidal for an entire month. Her mother tells her to kill herself and then says that she never said that, and if she did, Kenzie deserved it.
  • Accuser of the Brethren: Justified. Doesn't want to forgive Ricky even after she knows that he's sorry, but he's not really that sorry.
  • Alpha Bitch: Downplayed. Kenzie isn't especially popular or rich, but she is smart, charismatic, vain, narcisstic, conniving and controlling, traits she uses to survive at Sirencester.
  • Beneath the Mask: Kenzie hides her obvious mental issues with exaggerated happiness and snark. She also hides her real identity when she catfishes Ricky and Levi.
  • Becoming the Mask: Although she technically already had feelings for Ricky prior to catfishing him, they only grow stronger as their fake relationship continues. Kenzie finds herself conflicted, but after he lies about what happened with the real version of her to prop himself up, she dumps him.
  • Brainy Brunette: Although Kenzie has black hair, she applies, as she's in all honors and in the top 10 of the freshman class in the beginning.
  • Break the Cutie: At the beginning of freshman year, Kenzie has an optimistic view of high school, and everything in general. This slowly wears off as she realizes that high school isn't the magical place it is in movies, and much more fucked up, and becomes a terrible person with a deteriorating mental state.
  • Consummate Liar: Got Levi locked up in jail for years for a crime he didn't commit.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Physically and emotionally abused by her parents. Bullied, especially by Ricky.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Kenzie's constant use of sarcasm and creative insults.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Kenzie catfishing Ricky with the intention of spilling all his secrets. Justified, though, when you realize just how guilty Ricky is. Also, Kenzie framing Levi, but when considered Levi is an asshole who threatened and intimidated Kenzie for suggesting Torie break up with him, all the while he was emotionally abusing her, this may be justified.
  • Drama Queen: Kenzie acts and talks extremely dramatic. Discussed when someone says that she acts like an extremely bad actress playing every bitch from every high school show.
  • Everybody Knew Already: When she discovers everyone's been talking about her crush on Ricky.
  • Empty Shell: Although Kenzie acts overly emotional, it's a coverup for how she feels nothing on the inside and lacks the motivation she possessed in middle school.
  • False Friend: Kenzie seduces Ricky using a fake identity to gain his secrets just so she can leak them, although her guilt prevents her from doing so and it's never revealed to Ricky.
  • Frameup: Kenzie frames Levi for possession of child porn.
  • Ghetto Name: Downplayed. People call Kenzie "Keisha" as a racist taunt and state that the name Mackenzie is just 'too white'.
  • Like Is, Like, a Comma: Uses 'like' in her daily conversation far too much.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Lies to police, frames people for crimes, and seduces people with the intention of ruining their lives. It's a wonder this girl is 14.
  • Restrained Revenge: Kenzie hates Ricky and wants revenge on him, but his high social status and power to start a vicious rumor about her whenever he wants prevents her from doing so. To his face, at least. So she jabs at him constantly as a guilt-trip.
  • Stalker with a Crush: With Noel when she was younger, although she does get over him before the book and her crush on him is only mentioned by her and other characters, often mockingly. Kenzie does admit to this with Noel.Downplayed with Ricky, who insists Kenzie is this with him, although she is not at first. Kenzie quickly reverts to this, though.
  • Stepford Smiler: Other characters point out that Kenzie acts happy to the point that it's unreal and creepy, and as the year goes on, it is unreal.
  • Stepford Snarker: Kenzie is extremely snarky, especially to Ricky, just because she's hurt.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Kenzie won't tolerate Ricky's treatment of her anymore and tells everyone his biggest secret and makes fun of him.
  • Valley Girl: Kenzie speaks purposely in a high-pitched, annoying voice, appears ditzy (although she is not) and is extremely vain.

    Ricky Pembrook
Ricky Pembrook is Kenzie Daavettila's ex-love interest. Ricky was born in The Hamptons, New York, USA, having moved to Sirencester at the age of 12. Ricky is a 14-year-old freshman at Sirencester High School. Ricky is an attractive, athletic, charismatic and popular student and lacrosse player. Ricky is widely liked and respected and has had his fair share of flings with the girls at Sirencester. Having resided in the rich suburbs of New York City for the majority of his life, Ricky has an entitled, spoiled streak. Unbeknownst to most, Ricky's charisma masks his nastier side of him, evident with the way he has treated several girls, including Kenzie. In the beginning, Ricky seems to not mind his median-line social status at Sirencester Middle School, but as high school begins, Ricky becomes more concerned with his popularity and would hurt people to make himself look good.
  • Dark Secret: Ricky told a kid to kill themselves in elementary school and they did.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Kenzie has a crush on him, so Ricky tells everyone, turns her friends against her, dates her friend just to get a jab at her, bodyshames her, and lies about what happened to make him seem justified.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Ricky is this momentarily when fake-Kenzie discovers he does feel bad for his actions. Although she does realize he must not feel that bad if he never bothered to apologize. And is still telling his friends lies about her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Ricky's possible redemption arc falls flat when Kenzie realizes he lied about what happened to a stranger that he could tell his biggest secret to, but couldn't tell the truth about what happened. What's up with that? It's assumed by her that he told all his friends the same lie. Also, Ricky notes that telling everyone someone has a secret crush on you is wrong, but even after this notice, he continues to tell people about what happened with Kenzie. He says he still feels terrible for driving a little kid to suicide just by saying 'kill yourself', but then does the exact same thing to Kenzie, and it's not a joke. Yikes.
  • Karma Houdini: No one seems to care that Ricky is a cheater, liar, and overall jerk when Kenzie makes them aware. Ricky just gets away with the way he is.
  • Malicious Slander: Ricky tells everyone the reason he's so mean to Kenzie is because she spread vicious rumors about him being an abusive boyfriend after he wouldn't give her his phone number, although none of this is true.
  • Suicide Dare: Ricky screams at Kenzie to go die. Also, the unnamed boy he drove to suicide.
  • The Ace: Ricky is popular, attractive, charismatic, athletic, and wealthier than most of Sirencester. The only thing he lacks is intelligence, although his grades aren't horrible.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Ricky's clearly a terrible person, but everyone likes him.

    Torie Cagliostro
Katoria "Torie" Cagliostro is Kenzie Daavettila's ex-best friend and the best friend of Dahlia Fenceroy.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Despite Torie literally starting all the drama with Kenzie, she still manages to remain innocent in the eyes of her friends.

     Dahlia Fenceroy
Dahlia Fenceroy is Kenzie Daavettila's ex-best friend and the best friend of Torie Cagliostro.
  • Big Bad Friend: Dahlia backstabs Kenzie to defend Torie and Levi's abusive relationship, and backstabs her in regards to Ricky.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Dahlia lies to get Kenzie in trouble and goes against her wishes regarding Ricky just because she likes him too, then acts as if Kenzie's requests are incredulous and she's allowed to violate them if she wants.
  • Broken Pedestal: Downplayed and subverted. Not that Dahlia really idolized Ricky, but she does say "He wouldn't do that" when Kenzie makes her aware of his cheating. Despite the fact that he bragged about cheating and did all those horrible things to her best friend, apparently Ricky wouldn't do that.
  • Gossipy Hens: Gossips about literally everyone, especially the popular, Ricky, and Kenzie.

Supporting Characters

    Keighley Hoffstetter
Keighley Eli Hoffstetter is the good friend of Kenzie Daavettila. She is a 14-year-old freshman at Sirencester Valley High School, residing in Sirencester, Pennsylvania. Keighley first developed a reputation for being a promiscuous 12-year-old after vaguely pornographic videoes had been released of her. Keighley seems to be an attention-starved, popularity-hungry girl who would sleep her way to the top- and does.
  • Attention Whore: Keighley's obsession with boys and popularity is due to her constant need for attention.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Subverted. Keighley lies about her abusive past to garner sympathy.
  • Dating Service Disaster: When she catfishes Jasper as an older girl just so she could threaten him with his naked pictures that he had to date her or she would release them.
  • Double Standard: Downplayed. Despite Kenzie and Keighley both being 14-year-old girls of approximately the same social status and Keighley being much worse than Kenzie in regards to her leaked pornographic videoes, cheating, stalking, and promiscuity at a young age, everyone kind of ignores Keighley's past or just puts it aside while Kenzie feels the effects of her past on her every day.
  • Hypocrite: When Keighley's boyfriend cheats on her, Keighley is hugely upset, despite being an extreme serial cheater.
  • Fille Fatale: Keighley is only 14 and constantly flirting with several guys at once, even going so far as to cheat on her boyfriend with multiple guys over the course of only a month.
  • Likes Older Men: 12-year-old Keighley becomes obsessed with a 17-year-old. She also seems to go for people years older than her in general.
  • Psycho Ex-Girlfriend: Keighley with Jasper, as it's hinted that they had some sort of relationship and were romantically and sexually involved until Jasper didn't want anything to do with her anymore. Keighley then attacks Jasper's girlfriends and catfishes him into sending him nudes just to use them to force him to date her. Also with Arthur, as after he cheats on her and breaks up with her she tries to influence every single girl he's talking to and gets Kenzie to talk to him.
  • Really Gets Around: Keighley is constantly talking to an extremely high amount of guys at once considering her age.

    Levi Khangura
Levi Khangura is Kenzie Daavettila's enemy and Torie Cagliostro's ex-boyfriend. He is a 16-year-old freshman at Sirencester High School, having been held back twice.
  • Domestic Abuse: To Torie. He constantly is emotionally abusing her, including getting overly jealous for no reason on the regular, calling her names and saying she is worthless, and telling her to kill herself.
  • Dating Service Disaster: With Kenzie, who, unbeknowst to him, seduces him into cheating on Torie.
  • Jerk Jock: An asshole, who also happens to be a football player.
  • Suicide Dare: Levi tells Torie to kill herself after suspecting (for no reason) that she is talking to her ex.
  • The All-American Boy: Levi is a relatively tall, blonde-haired, blue-eyed football player.
     Carolyn Daavettila
Carolyn "Carrie" Daavettila is the older sister of Kenzie Daavettil. She is 25 years old, making her 11 years Kenzie's senior, and an alumni of Sirencester High School.
