Main Characters

     the Hero 
The younger brother to the actual Chosen One, the Hero is forced to take on his brother's title when he dies.
  • Deadpan Snarker: In fairness, unlike the others in his group, he knows when to shut it off.
  • Genre Savvy: One of his big advantages is that he's read a ton of stories similar to this one, and so knows the common pitfalls to avoid and other things to watch for (for example, he immediately recognizes most soon-to-be party members because they look unique from everyone else).
  • Guile Hero: He has no combat experience, and isn't particularly smart enough to perform magic. What he is good at, however, is talking to others and getting into places he shouldn't. These two qualities, beyond any others, allow him to get people who'd normally kill each other to work together as well as access places and things he would otherwise not be able to.
  • Meta Guy: A large part of his character is snarking about how idiotic/stereotypical someone's plan/behavior is, and poking fun at things he sees as cliche.
  • Refusal of the Call: Is understandably freaked out when news of his brother's death means he is the new champion. He outright refuses to go along with it, until circumstances force his hand.
  • The Unchosen One: His brother was the Chosen One, but he was soundly defeated. Now the Hero has to take his place, and that is far from an easy task.
  • Unlikely Hero: He's just a spoiled younger prince with no aspirations or goals beyond the next hedonistic streak.

Party Members

     Cheng Yu, the Alchemist 
A former member of the University of the White Lotus, Cheng Yu was expelled after too many breaches of conduct in his experiments.
  • Deadly Doctor: He makes most of his money curing illnesses and healing injuries, but make no mistake, Cheng Yu has deadly grenades of various effects.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's more Deadpan than Snarker, but he's one of the best examples in the story.
  • Dr. Jerk: Cheng isn't exactly a friendly guy. He's not outright hostile, but he's extremely cold and apathetic to most people.
  • For Science!: Is interested solely in seeing how his concoctions react in the field of battle, and joins the Hero for this reason alone.
  • Mad Doctor: Doesn't solely specialize in medicine, however, but he still counts.
  • Mad Scientist: It's rather telling that he was banished from a school of other Mad Scientists.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Subverted. His medical licence was redacted when he left the university. Not that most villages mind, seeing as his potions are still good.

     Olivia Allegri, the Assassin 
A Classy Cat-Burglar with a huge Money Fetish, Olivia is Only in It for the Money and came along for the loot and gold on their voyage.
  • Classy Cat-Burglar: For obvious reasons she doesn't have the cat suit, but she fits the rest of the mold.

     Thorn, the Barbarian 
A Blood Knight with no home and no name save for that on his sword, Thorn embodies the most violent aspects of warfare.
  • The Berserker: He is a barbarian, after all. Every time he gets into a fight, he goes into a killing frenzy.
  • Blood Knight: To a downright ridiculous degree. Thorn loves to fight in every regard, and relishes killing. If he hadn't been recruited by the good guys, he'd likely end up as a boss somewhere down the road.
  • The Big Guy: Stated to be about 6' 6", though the in-game engine makes him look the same height as everyone else.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Oh boy, this might be a while.
    • First and foremost, fighting is the single greatest good. Struggle and conflict promote evolution and adaptation, and dying simply lets you go to the afterlife, which is just as good.
    • Rules and regulations are for chumps, your own personal oath being far more important. However, there's nothing against following someone else's creed, just make sure you think for yourself.
    • Honesty and bravery are also valued highly, though bravery far more than honesty.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Subverted. He's not friendly or nice in any regard.
  • Death Seeker: Subverted. Upon hearing about his religion, the player character can directly ask if Thorn wants to die. His answer is a Slasher Smile and a simple "no".
  • Dual Wielding: Does this to his axes. He's scarily effective at it, too.
  • Dumb Muscle: He's certainly not stupid, but he's far from an intellectual.
  • Expy: Basically Kenpachi Zaraki.
  • Heaven Seeker: He believes in an afterlife very similar to Valhalla, which is why he's so obsessed with fighting. It serves double for him, as this would also allow him to ask his deities what his name was in his mortal life. Not that he's in a terrible hurry to die though.
  • Hidden Depths: Occassionaly, Thorn shows that he's more than a mindless killing machine. For one, he understands battlefield tactics and logistics to a greater degree than even the Hero does, and he knows a huge amount of fighting styles from people he's killed. He also proves to have great knowledge on his religion and others, as evidenced by his comments to the other religious characters.
  • In-Series Nickname: Thorn is not his real name, it's the one etched onto his sword, which he took off a corpse. He has absolutely no idea what his name is, and desperately wants to figure it out.
  • I Owe You My Life: The Hero breaks him out of the prison he was to be executed in, so he pledges his loyalty to him until he can save his life in turn.
  • Named Weapons: Inverted. The weapon technically named him. Possibly played straight in regard to his sword, as it's unknown if the weapon is named Thorn, or if that was the previous owner's name.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Of a sort. He's not actually a member of the Viking-esque race in the setting, but he follows their culture and religion.
  • Slasher Smile: When he smiles, it's usually of this variety.
  • The Social Darwinist: He believes in this, which is why he loves conflict so much, as it allows one to adapt and increase their status in life. He also admits that intellectual strength is just as important, but has no patience for such things.
  • Sociopathic Hero: The only reason Thorn even works alongside the others is because he owes the Hero for helping him. Otherwise, he'd have probably killed them as soon as looked at them.
  • The Stoic: When not in a fight, he mostly is content to give blank stares and not speak at all. Most likely, he finds non-combat related things dreadfully boring.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Oh yeah. Everyone else at least has some redeeming quality about them in regards to doing the right thing, even if it's for selfish reasons. Thorn is the only one who doesn't believe in the cause at all, only journeying with the Hero out of a debt.
  • Wrecked Weapon: The sword he took his name from is rusted to oblivion and unfit for battle, so he simply carries it with him. It's the only relic he has that his name even exists, after all.

     Lou Rousselle, the Bard 

     Gabriel Summerfield, the Cleric 

     Volker Nosske, the Druid 

     Indro Cavalcante, the Magus 

     Zhuan Lei, the Monk 
A blind monk with mystic powers, Monk can fight on par with those with weapons or sight.

     Ambrose Goldshield, the Paladin 
A military with decades of experience, Ambrose is called back to arms out of devotion to his common man.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Ambrose is a gold-hearted individual who wants to help anyone who needs it. If said help they need is taking care of some bandits, he's more than happy to kill them.
  • Church Militant: He directly participated in three Crusades, and still considers himself an instrument of the Lord's will. Despite this, he is not a Badass Preacher (he admits he couldn't even read the scriptures until he was in his thirties) or a Well-Intentioned Extremist (as he firmly believes in the Good of To Be Lawful or Good).
  • For Great Justice: Believes in this, to the extent he's willing to die to see it happen.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Subverted. He is heroic and uses swords, but he's not the main character.
  • Knight Errant: Spends his days doing this, though he had retired before. Now he does it simply to get a meal or two in his belly. The player can convince him to join his party though, and it doesn't take much.
  • Knight Templar: Averted. Ambrose specifically made sure he never strayed that far down the path "like so many before him" to religious fanaticism.
  • Officer and a Gentleman: He is a member of a noble house, and volunteered to be a paladin when offered. Personality wise, he's very polite and kind to civilians and would lay down his life for them.
  • The Paladin: Duh.
  • Retired Badass: After the Ninth Crusade he officially retired from service as a paladin, but circumstances have forced his hand to fight off evil once again.
  • Silver Fox: Considering his age, he looks incredibly good. Some of the others even comment on this. Ambrose, for the most part, doesn't seem to use it.
  • Still Wearing the Old Colors: His default outfit is his old paladin uniform, which he kept intact all this time.

     Diane Voclain, the Ranger 
A hunter who specializes in monsters, Diane roams the land collecting bounties on various creatures.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Uses traps, poisons, and a variety of arrows to win her battles. When you fight creatures strong enough to take on whole companies of men, it's best to fight like your life depended on it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: One of the top contenders in the party for this.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Subverted. Some of the others in the group accuse her of being this, but she denies it, stating that she simply hunts monsters because she's good at it, and someone has to do it.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Believes in this ideal. She only does what she does because she gets paid for it, not out of altruism.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Doesn't brag, boast, or even speak to most of the things she kills. This applies to her intelligent quarry as well, making her rather unnerving to fight against.
  • The Stoic: The most emotion she shows is quiet satisfaction or smug deadpan humor.
  • Vampire Hunter: Mentions she does this on occasions, though she tends to avoid it.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Doesn't have magic of any sort and isn't particularly strong physically, so she must rely entirely on her skills.
  • The Witch Hunter: Mentions she does this on occasions, though she tends to avoid it.

     Robin Falk, the Warrior 
A woman of war, Robin is the former wife of a famous warrior and the Team Dad of the group hilariously.
  • Famous Ancestor: More like Famous Spouse, but it's similar enough. Her husband, Viktor Falk, was a sea captain who lead numerous raids across the countryside. His death inspired her to take up his arms in his name.
  • The Lad-ette: While her culture downplays femininity already (think Vikings), Robin is a premier example of this trope. She drinks, swears, and loves a good fight. Simon outright calls her more masculine than him.
  • Team Dad: Despite being female, Robin is closer to this trope than Team Mom.

     Simon Blecher, the Wizard 
A scholar of magic, Simon is the smartest member of the group and resident Team Mom ironically enough.
  • Badass Bookworm: Simon has spent his entire life studying magic, and while not top of his class or even acknowledged by his school, he's remarkably powerful for a mage.
  • Mr. Exposition: Fulfills this role in conversation.
  • No Social Skills: Has spent most of his life cooped up with books, and so has little in the ways of interaction. He's trying to figure it out though.
  • The Smart Guy: Studious, and has a vast array of knowledge on various subjects.
  • Team Mom: Despite being male, Simon is closer to this trope than Team Dad. He's gentle and patient with his younger charges, and prefers subtle guidance over orders.
