Standard Deviation takes place in the Variance Verse. The story centers around 19-year-old Abby Tanner, an autistic woman who was born with a genetic mutation that gives her heightened senses, the power to absorb information, and the inability to forget things. Despite her young age, Abby has just gotten her doctorate, and is working as a genetic researcher in a lab where research is being done on both autism and genetic mutation. A team of geneticsts, headed by Abby's newfound friend, Dr. Brian Collier, is working on developing prenatal testing that for, among other things, autism and genetic mutations that can cause people to develop powers like Abby's.
But this is only half of Abby's life. Most people underestimate her, seeing only a shy, socially awkward young scientist and not realizing she's secretly a superhero.
