Something Is Coming Out From Under The Mountain is the (working) title of a planned series by two overworked college students. While only referred to as 'The Thing' by the authors, The Thing is actually already a thing.
The story follows a large cast of characters as they go through regular high school life at Nuther's School for the Gifted Child; you know, attending class, dealing with crushes, and killing demons that threaten to end the world. Regular stuff for regular kids.
Well, regular is a relative term.
The series is planned on spanning at least two books, describing the struggle between the super-powered human elite and the magic-cancelling E.B.S. humans, as teenagers work to revolutionize the world and make it into a better place.
1Something Is Coming Out From Under The Mountain provides examples of:
- Abusive Parents: The Hexcyanferrate parents are this to Molly and Xenon. They keep padlocks on the fridge, which only they and Annie have keys to. When they aren't hurling barbed comments at Molly and Xenon, they're ignoring them. While Molly's been dealing with this for all his remembered life, since he's always been powerless, so being gay didn't change much of his parents' treatment of him. Meanwhile, Xenon's had a tougher time dealing with their parent's abuse, since they used to be adored by their parents... until they came out as trans.
- Adults Are Useless: Zig-zagged. While most of the work does fall on the youngsters, they are still specially trained youngsters-trained by adults. Of course, there are some instances where adults are better suited for the task at hand, and the reliance on kids by adults is exploited by Sepida and Persin.
- Art Shift: Or rather, Font Shift. When someone is thinking, whether to themselves or to someone else, the font changes depending on the person who is "speaking".
- Badass Normal: Even parents who both have powers can end up having a kid who's, for all intents and purposes, a Muggle. Still, there's uses for them at Nuther's; they end up becoming The Smart Guy who the more-offensive team members use to supply with information about whatever monster they're fighting. Of course, they still have to learn how to fight—can't have any of these precious children getting killed off, now can we!
- Boarding School: Nethur's School and St. Carthaige's are both boarding schools.
- Break-Up/Make-Up Scenario: Xenon ends up dumping Zinc after he accidentally cheats on them, but they take him back eventually.
- Cast Full of Gay: There's only a few heterosexual characters. Well, less than 'a few,' and more like 'one or two.' Given the authors are both gay, it shouldn't really be a surprise.
- Straight Gay: Since almost every character is not heterosexual, there's few, if any, reliance on stereotypes. So, most everyone can fall under the "Straight Gay" umbrella.
- Child Soldier: These are all teenagers, but they're expected to fight to the death.
- Class Trip: Of course, given that this is a school that trains kids to fight monsters, these are less 'trips to the science museum' and more 'trips to hunt down and kill demons'.
- Desert: The school is in a desert.
- Embarrassing Last Name: The Hexcyanferrates, due to both family issues and the fact that no one can pronounce their last name correctly. Molly is hit with a double dose: Molbdenum Hexcyanferrate.
- Fantastic Racism: Those afflicted with E.B.S., are feared and discriminated against; they're seen as violent and stupid animals rather than humans. They're also oppressed as they're the only group that can both resist the super-powered elite humans, and, in some cases, have powers themselves, on par with humans.
- Girl Posse: The closest thing to a 'popular clique' the school consists of Bety, Kaya, Malici, Casi, and Celeste. However, due to everyone's varied class schedules and different age groups, they rarely do much other than eat lunch together and gossip. After Bety and Hiyoko become friends, the group falls apart.
- Gone Horribly Right: At one point, when fed up with Molly and Zinc's constant bickering, their team decides to take the car and leave them stranded in the city to find their own way home as a prank, of course. However, when the group returns a few hours later to pick up the two boys, it turns out they took them seriously... and have left.
- Head Desk: After being kidnapped at St. Carthaige's, Celeste repeatedly hits her head on the table in front of her in frustration.
- Little Bit Beastly: The E.B.S. characters. Those affected have the ears, tails, eyes, and sometimes a few claws of certain animals. Besides that, they also have a Third Eye in the center of their forehead, and the ability to cancel out the powers of others. Of course, they're treated the exact same as everyone else! ...As long as they hide any non-human characteristics and have the proper papers to prove they're not mindless animals. E.B.S. afflicted people were actually the results of an experiment by a radical super-powered terrorist group who, intent on destroying the 'elite' powered humans, combined some of said super-powered humans with certain animals resistant to their powers.
- Meaningful Name: Most all of the characters have names that mean something.
- Noodle Incident: Just what happened on Molly and Zinc's friendship field trip?!
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Molly, Annie, and Beryl don't use their first names very often.
- Orphanage of Love: The 'No Parents Kids' live at one and are looked after by Teri.
- Polyamory: Teri, Vrik, and Snow are all in a loving, three-way relationship with each other.
- Sliding Scale of OrphanIssues: Due to the dangers of monster fighting, a lot of students are orphans. There's a large variety of how each student feels about their predicament: Lappia doesn't much talk about it; Casi, Rory, Beryl, and Zinc's parents died a while ago; Teri and Kage are glad their parents are gone ; Concua loses her only parent mid-book, and is heart-broken
- School Uniforms are the New Black: Everyone at school wears uniforms while at school. When on a trip for the school, they still wear their uniforms to show that they're on official school business.
- Sex Is Good: It's a bunch of teenagers in a school in the middle of nowhere who have to fight monsters. Hormones run rampant. Very few of the kids dating others don't have sex.
- Sibling Team: Since a lot of siblings go to the same school, they're usually put on the same teams.
- Theme Naming: The kids from well-respected hunter families are named after periodic elements.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Because of the stress of uncontrolled healing magic and the difficulty of controlling powerful magic, Healers are often expected to go insane. In fact, E.B.S. was created by Healers attempting to get rid of magic.
Molbdenum "Molly" Hexcyanferrate
The leader of the Alpha Pi team and number one big brother to Annie and Xenon. Though he has no powers of his own, he's smart and capable of leading a group of super-powered kids— and have some modicum of control over them. Though he's a bit of a hard-edge when it comes to the rules, he genuinely cares about his team members— even though sometimes he can be harsh.
- Badass Normal: He may have no powers, but he's definitely prepared for the life he's chosen. Plus, he's the team leader; he's definitely got some skills.
- Big Brother Instinct: Bordering on Knight Templar Big Brother when it comes to Annie, but definitely shows shades of this when it comes to Xenon as well, mainly in the form of My Sibling is Off-Limits. It doesn't help that Zinc is the one his little sibling decided to date.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Inverted. Molly finds his given name, Molybdenum, much more embarrassing, given how it's unpronounceable and a random element on the periodic table.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Xenon and Annie's foolish.
- Gay Guy Seeks Popular Jock: Holmium was the former team leader, so he had to be pretty good at his job; if their relationship is viewed as romantic, Zinc is popular and loves gym class; and Lil'T is a college frat boy and plays football. You could say Molly has a type.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Zinc, after their bonding trip. Though, one could argue that relationship crosses into Ho Yay territory.
- Jock Dad, Nerd Son: Molly's dad is a magical government agent that hunts and fights demons, while Molly himself is a Giles with straight A's.
- Muggle Born of Mages: One of the many reasons Molly is The Unfavorite.
- My Sister Is Off-Limits: Though this mainly manifests in animosity towards Zinc, Molly also doesn't approve of Beryl and Annie's budding feelings. Due to Molly and Zinc's later friendship upgrade, they become Best Friends-in-Law... after Xenon un-dumps Zinc, of course.
- Parental Abandonment: It's implied that Molly was sent to school so his parents could more easily ignore him.
- Promotion to Parent: Less so with Annie, as their parents still like her, but given their treatment of Xenon, Molly has basically taken over all parental roles in regards to Xenon.
- Second Love: Depending on how you interpret the relationship between Molly and Zinc post-bonding, Zinc could be this for Molly, but Molly's clear romantic feelings for Lil'T fit this trope much more clearly.
- Team Dad: As he's the eldest in the group and the group's leader, he usually falls into this role within his team. It doesn't help that he's pretty used to being in the paternal role, thanks to Annie and Xenon.
- Sibling Team: Zig-zagged. He's on the same team as Annie, but he and Annie are separated from Xenon.
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Zinc. That is, until their super weird friendship field trip.
- The One That Got Away: Holmium, his ex-boyfriend. Made worse by the fact that it was Molly's parents who forced them to break up.
- The Unfavorite: Molly is not liked by his parents since he's powerless and gay.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Inverted. His relationship with Zinc is definitely not friendly, and they argue all the time. After they do become friends, they stop the bickering and squabbling.
Zinc Ribitol
The second-in-command (though Molly is loath to admit it) of team Alpha Pi and Beryl's big brother. He's tough and loud, but despite how much he talks, only a few people can tell how he's really feeling. He much prefers to punch and speak before thinking.
- Big Brother Instinct: Though he's usually pretty hands-off in regards to taking care of Beryl (when compared to Molly, that is), he definitely has his moments, especially in regards to Mr. Cappiocia's... interest... in his sister.
- Boisterous Bruiser: Most people (except Molly) like him, and he's usually the brawn of the team.
- Brains and Brawn: The brawn to Radon's brain.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish to Beryl's responsible.
- Heterosexual Life-Partners:
- With Radon; they've been friends since childhood.
- With Molly, after their bonding trip. Though, one could argue that relationship crosses into Ho Yay territory.
- Love Will Lead You Back: after getting dumped by Xenon, he's willing to wait for however long for them to come back. As it should be, since it was his fault they broke up in the first place.
- Make-Out Kids: With Xenon.
- Promotion to Parent: After the deaths of their parents, Zinc and Teri became the closest thing Beryl has to parents.
- Psychometry: Zinc can see visions when he comes into contact with things of emotional value.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Guy: Loud and energetic, especially when compared to the quieter, pot smoking Radon.
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Molly. That is, until their super weird friendship field trip.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Inverted. His relationship with Molly is definitely not friendly, and they argue all the time. After they do become friends, they stop the bickering and squabbling.
Malici Santos-Limos
The illegitimate son of a French jewelry chain C.E.O. and his Brazilian mistress. He's cocky and not the least bit serious about much of anything (except maybe his boyfriend, Neptor). The only thing he hates more than the word "Gold Digger" is his half-sister and father.
- Annoying Younger Sibling: Is this to Dionea. Though, considering the circumstances, there's a good reason why she dislikes him.
- Berserk Button: Unless it's a pun on his metal powers, he doesn't like it when anyone calls himself or his mother a Gold Digger.
- Casanova In Love: He used to think of himself as a pretty smooth dude, but now that he's got a steady boyfriend, he doesn't care much for flirting anymore.
- Extraoredinary: Malici can control metals. However, this does not include people who are named after metals.
- Gay Best Friend: Despite most of his closest friends being female (with his Best Friend being the most popular girl in school, Bety Fairbairn), his friendship with them is not based on his gayness to accessorize their group.
- Nerd Glasses: Subverted. Even though he has large rimmed glasses, he's considered a pretty cool dude and is mildly popular as a part of Bety's posse.
- Secret Other Family: He and Dionea share a father; when on a trip to Brazil, their father met Malici's mother and started an affair, resulting in Malici. No one really knows how that mess got sorted out, but Malici and his mother have a steady supply of money after the whole incident.
- Sibling Rivalry: With Dionea. Given their... history, its understandable that they dislike each other.
- Sibling Team: Averted. He's one of the only people who's not on the same team as his sibling.
Radon Quinone
A quiet loner who somehow is best friends with Zinc. He's more of a rule-breaker than a lot of people think.
- Childhood Friend: With Zinc.
- Custom Uniform: A mild example. He never goes anywhere without his beanie.
- Emotion Bomb: He can influence the emotions of people. The more people he tries to control, the less influence he has on individuals. He mostly uses his powers to calm down Zinc and Molly, though.
- Erudite Stoner: He's a quiet kid and he smokes pot. He also often serves as an advise dispenser when Zinc needs help.
- Hacker Cave: His room has a lot of computers. Not just for hacking; he just likes video games.
- Only Sane Man: Though he rarely speaks up about the things he don't think will work out.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Guy: Could be part of why he's considered quiet; Zinc is pretty boisterous.
- The Quiet One: He doesn't really talk a lot. He's not exactly at The Stoic levels (yet), but he is definitely a quiet kid.
Antimony "Annie" Hexcyanferrate
Molly's little sister and the Hexcyanferrate's only daughter. Unlike her siblings, Annie is bright, talkative, and an optimist. Unfortunately, her parents and siblings' tendencies to spoil and baby her might have left her a bit unprepared for the responsibilities the school has given her.
- Childhood Friend: She and Beryl have been friends since they were babies, and they're the only reason Molly and Zinc would ever spend any time with each other.
- I Am Not My Father: Annie doesn't like being compared to her parents.
- Parental Favoritism: Though she's not very happy about it. She loves her siblings and doesn't like how their parents treat them, especially in relation to her. Still, she's surprised when her parents sell her out to the government after she runs away from school to ask for their help.
- Puppy Love: With Beryl.
- Sibling Team: Zig-zagged. She's on the same team as Molly, but they're separated from Xenon.
- Spoiled Sweet: Even though she's the favorite child of the Hexcyanferrates, she's very sweet and loves her elder siblings very much.
- Teleportation: She can teleport. However, since she's so young, she can only really go short distances.
- The Baby of the Bunch: Thanks to Molly being the leader of the group, she and Beryl are often babied.
Beryllium "Beryl" Ribitol
A small, quiet girl who can see the future. She skipped a grade, so she's the youngest kid in school— but somehow, she also seems to be the most mature. Despite this, however, she is still a child in more than a few ways.
- Adorably Precocious Child: She's the youngest kid in school, but she takes her job and training as the only Seer alive very seriously. However, most people just find her adorable.
- Childhood Friend: She and Annie have been friends since they were babies, and they're the only reason Molly and Zinc would ever spend any time with each other.
- Everyone's Baby Sister: She's the youngest of the entire school, and given that most of the older students already have some level of Big Sibling Instinct, it's pretty much instinct for them to act this way towards the younger students.
- Puppy Love: With Annie.
- Seers: She can see the future.
- Skilled, but Naive: Due to the fact that she's the only Seer alive, she's automatically the most skilled (though that's not to say she's weak power-wise). However, she has no idea why no one likes Mr. Cappoccia.
- The Baby of the Bunch: Thanks to Molly being the leader of the group, along with her own brother, she and Annie are often babied.
- Unskilled, but Strong: This is her first year in this school, and though she has an extremely powerful ability, she has little to no control over it.
- Waif Prophet: She's a small child with the ability to see the future.
Lappia Hernandez
A cold girl who not many people know that well. Given that she's an orphan, the people who did know her are probably long gone.
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She doesn't talk much, and has the dark hair.
- Emotion Suppression: Implied to be how she controls her power.
- Emotionless Girl: She's very serious and quiet.
- Playing with Fire: She can summon and control flames.
- Puppy Love: With Anomur in the second book.
- Mysterious Waif: Though she isn't an important plot point, she is a small, orphaned girl and many people don't know about her past.
- Spicy Latina: Averted. Not only is she one of the youngest kids in school, thus not into sex, she's also very deadpan and serious.
- Teen Genius: She's fourteen and shows amazing control over her powers. Of course, given what her power is, it probably requires a lot more control than other kids her age need.
- The Stoic: She rarely shows emotion on her face, instead relying on body language to convey how she feels.
The heiress to a French jewel store chain's C.E.O. and leader of Team Omicron Iota. While she acts carefree, she actually is very responsible when it comes to her team... though she allows herself some indulgences.
- Aura Vision: She can see people's auras, which reflect emotions and aspects of a person's personality. She usually uses this information to manipulate others.
- Big Beautiful Woman: She's heavier than other girls at the school, but she has no problem being seen as attractive.
- Big Fun: Chubby and liked by everyone (except the elder siblings of the girls she dates). She's also the daughter of a pretty rich dude, so she has some layer of aristocracy as well.
- Big Sister Bully: Towards Malici.
- The Casanova: She hopes from girl to girl, but unlike the usual trope, she makes sure not to hurt anyone.
- Custom Uniform of Sexy: She leaves her blouse unbuttoned lower and rolls up her skirt to look sexier. This gets her in a lot of trouble with the faculty.
- Sibling Rivalry: With Malici. Given their... history, its understandable that they dislike each other.
- Sibling Team: Averted. She's one of the only people to not be on the same team as her sibling.
Kage Kramer
- Badass Normal: He may have no powers, but he's definitely prepared for the life he's chosen.
- Big Brother Instinct: Inverted. His younger sister acts more like an older sister than he does.
- He Is Not My Boyfriend: To Lil'D. He refuses to acknowledge that they're dating, but they're not fooling anyone.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Zig-zagged. While Teri is loud and tomboy-ish, she takes her role as Team Mom really seriously. Meanwhile, though Kage is quieter and more studious, he is easily flustered and can be just as flighty as Teri.
- Muggle Born of Mages: He's a Giles, while his sister inherited Telepathy.
- Nerd Glasses: Played straight. He's studious and good in his classes, and wears glasses. Ironically, they're not as big or as thick as the other, more "rebellious" characters.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Platonic example with Teri.
- Secret Relationship: With Lil'D. They're terrible at keeping it a secret though... and not just because his little sister is a mind reader.
- Team Dad: A mild example. He mostly provides support for Teri's maternal moments.
Vrik Muller
- Affectionate Nickname: Vrik and Teri give Snow any Snow-based nickname they can think of: Snowbelle, Snowflower, Snowflake, Snowball, and so on.
- Custom Uniform: In a very small way; while his ripped jeans and leather jacket certainly seem rebellious, both are still within the school's uniform dress code.
- Delinquent Hair: He likes to dye his hair and his tips different colors to fit in with his too cool for school facade. He also has eyebrow and lip piercings to complete the look.
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: Implied to be part of why he dresses this way. Though, considering he has two girlfriends, he must be doing something right.
- Nerd Glasses: While he tries to be cool with dyed hair and piercings, he has to wear large glasses. Also, Teri is merciless when it comes to teasing him.
- Sickeningly Sweethearts: With Teri and Snow. Despite how much Teri and Vrik tease each other, Vrik is often caught thinking about how much he loves his girlfriends.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Teri. Vrik considers Teri his best friend as well as his girlfriend, so this still applies.
- Winds of Destiny, Change!: Can control luck. To him, it manifests as glowing gold sand, which he can manipulate with his mind. The more sand in an area, the luckier that area is.
Teri Kramer
- Affectionate Nickname: Vrik and Teri give Snow any Snow-based nickname they can think of: Snowbelle, Snowflower, Snowflake, Snowball, and so on.
- Cool Shades: Teri and her cool cherry-red shades. Not as weird as it should be, considering that the school is in a desert.
- Dirty Mind-Reading: She often uses her powers to peek into others' minds and find out about their relationships.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Zig-zagged. While Teri is loud and tomboy-ish, she takes her role as Team Mom really seriously. Meanwhile, though Kage is quieter and more studious, he is easily flustered and can be just as flighty as Teri.
- Mama Bear: To the 'No Parents Kids.'
- Mind over Manners: Averted. Teri has no issue with the fact that she can't turn off her telepathy. At worst, she gets a headache from the constant chatter when she's tired.
- Promotion to Parent: To all in the 'No Parents Kids' club. Implied to be part of the reason why the orphanage is the Orphanage of Love.
- Team Mom: Not to her own team; to the 'No Parents Kids.' She refuses to take care of anyone except "her kids."
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Tomboy to Snow's Girly-Girl.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: Platonic example with Kage.
- Sickeningly Sweethearts: To Snow and Vrik. Despite how much Teri and Vrik tease each other, Vrik is often caught thinking about how much he loves his girlfriends.
- Telepathy: She can read minds.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Vrik. Teri considers Vrik her best friend as well as her boyfriend, so this still applies.
Snow Vane
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: While Teri doesn't care much, Snow finds Vrik's fashion to be adorable. Though she stops liking it as much once she realizes her brother dresses the same way.
- Big Brother Attraction: Averted. Once she finds out Vrik and Noir have the same fashion tastes she starts to find herself less attracted to the 'bad boy' image.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Vrik, if 'sulking' or 'pouting' can count as brooding. Also a platonic example with Noir.
- Disappeared Dad: Her dad isn't mentioned by anyone.
- Don't Split Us Up: Due to her brother not having any powers, he was forced to go to St. Carthaige's while Snow went to Nuther's. They haven't seen each other for almost seven years since he was admitted. After they reunite, Snow leaves Nuther's to attend the new St. Carthaige's with Noir.
- Embarrassing Full Name: Martha Peters. Snow herself says that its family tradition to give children horribly embarrassing names.

- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Noir's foolish.

- Third Eye: In the middle of her forehead.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The Girly-Girl to Teri's Tomboy.
- Weather Manipulation: She can manipulate the weather.
Rory Thompson
- Half-Identical Twins: Despite being assigned different sexes at birth, Rory and Casi are alike enough in looks and stature that Rory can wear Casi's clothes no problem.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: Unlike her sister, her big, blue eyes show how innocent and naive she is.
- Invisibility: Can turn herself invisible. However, she has shaky, if any, control over her abilities. When she's flustered or nervous (which is often) she'll often blink out of sight.
- Polar Opposite Twins: Soft-spoken and nervous whereas Casi is loud and confident.
- Precocious Crush: Has one on Kaya.
- Momma's Girl: Towards her semi-adoptive mother, Teri. She's clingy and quite close to the older girl.
- Magic Pants: Rory can turn her clothes invisible as well as herself. It's implied that that requires a lot of control... because otherwise she'd have to take them off.
- Shrinking Violet: Nervous and easily frightened.
- Wonder Twin Powers: Averted. Rory and Casi's powers have nothing to do with each other.
Casi Thompson & Celeste Kaiser
Together:
- Battle Couple: Like everything else, fighting is done together.
- Can't Live Without You: A mild example. Casi and Celeste find it really hard to do anything when separated; Celeste is unable to control her powers without Casi, and Casi is unable to do anything without Celeste giving her energy.
- Light Feminine Dark Feminine: Casi has blonde hair and loves pink mini skirts; Celeste wears black sweaters and her bangs often get in her eyes. However, Casi is much more unpleasant than Celeste; she yells, curses, and is more likely to kick open a door than knock. Celeste, meanwhile, is the Shrinking Violet who follows Casi like a shadow.
- Pure Energy: Celeste has access to a huge amount of energy, but she can't control it. Enter Casi, who has no power of her own beyond being able to channel Celete's energy into something usable, whether it's Energy Balls, Telepathy, Telekinesis, and so-on. when they're separated however, they're useless. Celeste has too much energy, which makes her both extremely jittery and extremely irritable, along with no control of what her powers do. On the other hand, Casi, so used to Celeste supplying her energy, becomes almost narcoleptic, and unable to do anything other than stand and sway sleepily.
- Mindlink Mates: Casi and Celeste have a private telepathic link. Teri and Haikki can overhear it, but other than that, they can't hear or be heard by anyone else.
- Lipstick Lesbian: They're both feminine and they're both in love with each other.
- Violently Protective Girlfriend: Both for each other.
Casi:
- Big Sister Instinct: She's very protective of her sister, Rory.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: Averted. She has big, blue eyes and is very mean.
- Girlish Pigtails: She has two half-pigtails on each side of her head.
- Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Despite her blonde hair and love of pink, she's prone to yelling and cursing more than the boys.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's only cruel to others because of Celeste and Rory; due to the discrimination Celeste has faced before and discrimination Casi is afraid Rory will face, Casi is very protective of both. She either acts out in hopes of scaring threats into leaving them alone or so that they will punish her instead of Rory or Celeste.
- Loveable Beta Bitch: The Beta Bitch to Bety, but unlike usual set-ups, she's content being the beta bitch.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: Celeste was continuously discriminated against in school and ended up being held back a year due to teachers bullying her. Casi bombed her own classes and assignments to get held back as well so the two wouldn't be separated.
- Pink Means Feminine: Her favorite color is pink.
- Proud Beauty: Not exactly sexy, but definitely cute, and proud of it.
- Understanding Girlfriend: To Celeste in regards to her jealousy. When she notices it, Casi finds it adorable. She understands that Celeste is afraid of separation because of both her E.B.S. and her powers.
- Wonder Twin Powers: Averted. Rory and Casi's powers have nothing to do with each other.
Celeste:
- Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She's not very sociable and has dark hair.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: She doesn't like it when Casi doesn't pay attention to her.
- Evil Is Petty: Inverted. She's on the side of good, but is extremely petty to others.
- Goth: Of the Gloomy variety; she's quiet and wears a lot of dark colors.
- Head Desk: After being kidnapped at St. Carthaige's, Celeste repeatedly hits her head on the table in front of her in frustration.
- Ice Queen: Can seem this way to others, especially since she distrusts a lot of people.
- Lady of Black Magic: She's cold and cool, and has an extreme amount of power ...but only when she's with Casi. When they're separated the pent-up energy makes her explode, both figuratively and literally.
- Little Bit Beastly: She has bat ears, bat teeth, and dark, leathery skin. Unfortunately, her eyesight is bad too.
- Pink Means Feminine: Though her wardrobe is mostly black, she still likes the color pink.
- Scratch Damage: To Haikki; she licks her hand and scratches Haikki with her hand. Then implies that she has rabies. It doesn't do much besides gross out Haikki and make her mad, but Celeste is happy with the pettiness.
- Shrinking Violet: She's extremely shy and hides behind Casi most of the time; however, she comes off as being a bit of an Ice Queen at times.
- Amnesiacs are Innocent: Averted. Despite Bety's memory loss, she's still a bitch.
- Big Sister Instinct: To Kaya. Even though they're not actually sisters. Bety is Kaya's great-aunt.
- Despair Event Horizon: Averted. Despite Kaya being kidnapped, Bety is simply filled with determination to get her back. But then Zig-zagged: when Hiyoko is killed, Bety vows revenge.
- First-Name Basis: Bety is this with all of the teachers and faculty. She even has a special nickname for Thomas, the gym teacher. This is because Bety has been in school as long as most of the faculty. In the case of Thomas Winters, they were even students together.
- Forgetful Jones: Bety is quite forgetful at times, from confusing what things have happened to Missing Time. It's because the school is forcefully removing her memories.
- Harmful Healing: She has no control over her powers and has been stuck in high-school for almost forty years because of it.
- Morality Chain: Hiyoko becomes this for her. After her death, Bety becomes very upset.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: The school periodically erases Bety's memories in hopes of both controlling her and also studying a Healer before they go off the deep end.
- Life Drinker: When Bety is injured, she becomes this to use other's Life Energy to heal herself.
- Life Energy: Bety should, theoretically, be able to control this; by taking life force from one thing, she can apply it to another injury and heal it. However, she has a lot of difficulty controlling it, and can't remember a time when she successfully used it on purpose.
- Lovable Alpha Bitch: She's the Alpha Bitch at school, has her own Girl Posse and Gay Best Friend, and she's crass and rude... but don't mess with her students.
- Older Than They Look: Bety is short and chubby, so some people mistake her for a younger teenager. Even further: Bety actually should be in her fifties, due to her powers, she actually looks like a teenager.
- One Head Taller: Bety is already shorter than a normal person and Lil'J is already taller than average, and he has a crush on her.
- Power Incontinence: Bety has no control over her healing power unless she's injured, and then she has no control over who she takes health from.
- Proud Beauty: Bety knows she's pretty and is proud of it.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Towards everyone except Kaya, especially Lil'J (where it becomes borderline Ice Queen).
- Teacher/Student Romance: Bety has a crush on Tommy Winters. It turns out they actually dated when Tommy was in school.
- The Napoleon: She's short and very aggressive.
- Valley Girl: She talks in the slang and certainly loves the beach, but she doesn't have the honest sincerity or the stupidity typically associated with the character. However, she's not a parody character; she is actually from the sixties. Her healing powers make her eternally young.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Lil'D. She dared him to make his only pair of glasses huge Triangle Shades.
- Walking Spoiler: She has... a lot of spoilers related to her.
- Who Wants to Live Forever?: Theoretically, Bety could live forever. She doesn't like the idea.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: As with all Healers, Bety faces the threat of going insane from her powers. This is exactly what the school is trying to avoid by erasing her memories.
Lil'D Bonner
- Big Brother Instinct: Averted with Lil'J. He likes his brother fine, but he isn't protective of him, nor very parental.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The responsible to Lil'J's and the rest of his brothers' foolish.
- Lovable Jock: He's pretty sporty and athletic (though, at their school, everyone has to be).
- Massive Numbered Siblings: Lil'D has five older brothers. [[Lovable Jock: All of them are members of the same frat and play football. It's expected that he'll join them when he graduates.]]
- He Is Not My Boyfriend!: On the receiving end of this from Kage. He doesn't much care about what people think.
- Secret Relationship: With Kage. Though they're not very good at hiding it, especially since Kage's sister is a mind reader.
- Teleportation: He can teleport inanimate objects to an undisclosed place he calls 'The Locker' that only he can access and pull them out as well.
- Triangle Shades: He wears them at all times. They're prescription. Bety dared him to make his only pair of glasses huge anime shades.
- The Stoic: He doesn't show a lot of emotion.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance: He denies it, but everyone says he's similar he to his brothers.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Bety.
Lil'J Bonner
- Badass Normal: As a Giles, he has no powers, but he can fight along with the rest of his team.
- Dogged Nice Guy: He has a crush on Bety and is extremely obvious about it. However, though she doesn't reciprocate, he's perfectly fine with being her friend.
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The foolish with the rest of his brothers to Lil'J's responsible.
- Gentle Giant: He's extremely tall, but kind and a bit naive.
- Lovable Jock: He's pretty sporty and athletic (though, at their school, everyone has to be).
- Massive Numbered Siblings: Lil'D has six older brothers. [[Lovable Jock: All of them are members of the same frat and play football. It's expected that he'll join them when he graduates.]]
- Magical Seventh Son: Inverted. His six brothers all have magic powers, but he is powerless.
- One Head Taller: He has a crush on Bety and he's extremely tall.
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Kaya. She's the only one he's outright mean to.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance: He has similar interests and sense of humor as his brother, along with tastes in women (except for Lil'D, Lil'T, and Lil'R of course.
Kaya Fairbairn
- Cool Big Sis: Sees Bety as one. It turns out, Bety isn't actually her sister; she's her great-aunt. However, because of their shared last name and their resemblance, they rearranged her memories so she forgot that she didn't have a sister.
- False Memories: She remembers Bety as her sister, but that's actually not true.
- Precocious Crush: Rory has one on her, and its unclear if its unrequited or Kaya is just waiting for Rory to get a bit older. At the very least, Kaya is fond of the younger girl.
- Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Lil'J. She's pleasant to everyone but him.
- The Fashionista: She's highly interested in fashion. Part of the reason why she dislikes Lil'J is because of his fashion sense... even though they all wear the same uniform. Later, she starts making dresses and other clothes for Rory.
