Beginnings of Blackwater (flashback)

The beginnings of Blackwater spans from 1 and is about the beginnings of Blackwater that all appear before this series begins.

Founding of Blackwater (1864-1876)

  • April 1858: A group of around thirty some emigrants were traveling across a trail by the Sweetwater River, and a member of the group named Shackleford went to get a drink from the nearby freshwater river, when he noticed that a small amount of gold and other minerals had been flowing along the stream. He told the rest of his group, and they decided to create a camp near the river where the gold was found. The members of the group continued panning for gold and prospecting, however they had little to no success.

  • September 1858: A few months later, the community of emigrants began leaving this camp they had created due to there being barely any gold. This only left a few people, and one of these was Dillon Merry. While prospecting, Dillon found a native american woman who had been left out in the stream and was seriously wounded. He cared for the woman, and took her to a local doctor named Gilliam. Dillon and the woman, who was named Makawee.

  • January 1859: Makawee and Dillon had a fairly good relationship, and Makawee was pregnant. Little did Dillon know, that Makawee was the daughter of Sitting Bull, the chief of the Sioux tribe. Makawee had been abducted by another emigrant and had been beat senseless and most likely sexually abused, before throwing her into the stream. The Sioux tribe thought that Dillon was the one who had been kidnapped Sitting Bull's daughter, and so they planned an attack on Dillon and the rest of his camp.

  • Febuary 1859: At the beginning of February, the Sioux tribe attacked the unprepared settlement by Sweetwater river. This resulted in eight deaths of the settlers, and two native american deaths - one of these was Makawee who died from being shot in the head with an arrow by Sitting Bull. While aiming at Merry, Makawee sacrificed herself and died from blood loss by her father's hand. Dillon Merry, two unnamed settlers and Gillian fled higher up the Sweetwater river, before reestablishing their settlement.

  • August 1859 - October 1859: On August 11th, 1865 - Dillon Merry struck it rich when he found a considerable amount of gold while prospecting over the span of a few months. By October 1865, he had made roughly $200 ''($3,000). He began to establish his settlement, and got a few new members who were migrating across the Sweetwater River.

  • November 1959 - May 1862: Dillon's settlement continued growing (which he dubbed Blackwater due to the Sweetwater River appears black at times due to minerals.) along with his luck with prospecting and his the fortune he made. By May of 1862, he had roughly one hundred people living in the community and had made several thousand dollars. Also in May, he was contacted by Rupert Steinbech, a congressman who was interested in building a railroad. He heard of the fortune Dillon was making, and was hoping to build a railroad to attract more people to the community for prospecting. The two formed a deal - where Dillon would be the "mayor" of the town, but Rupert would have true control over the town, however a majority of the profits went to Dillon. Dillon would be more of a "public image". Little did Dillon know that Rupert had criminal intentions.
