Before Decay Takes Us is an unpublished fantasy/adventure novel by jiminee. She promises to write it. Someday. Also that title may be changed if she thinks of a better one.
Hex Auder is a sullen, reactive eighteen-year-old who likes gardening more than people and isn't really a fan of adventure until they find themself in one. They and their younger sister Cicely have grown up in the city of Cygnus, living and working in a hotel run by their adoptive father, Brack. But when Cicely is kidnapped and taken across the country towards the dangerous wilds, a place teeming with strange creatures, and Brack goes missing, Hex must follow.During their chase they meet many weird characters and (sometimes) begrudgingly make friends with them.
This unpublished work contains examples of:
- Metamorphosis: The Neidr transform from snake to human form after coming into contact with a human.
- Interspecies Romance: Saiph, a centaur, and Pyrope, a human.
- Femme Fatale: Subverted. While Virgo is beautiful, dresses in red and her morals are questionable at best, Virgo never uses her sexuality to take advantage of anyone - not intentionally, anyway.
- Parental Substitute: Brack to Hex and Cicely.
- Hates Everyone Equally: Hex hates everyone, with the exception of Brack and Cicely, at first.
- Jerkass: Hex can be this.
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: Hex. Goddamn.
- I Will Find You: When Cicely is kidnapped, it kickstarts Hex's journey.
- Fantastic Racism: Humans towards monsters, going so far as to build walls to separate them.
- Grim Up North: Pasaulis gets wilder and less civilised in the northwest, particularly behind the wall.
- Dye Hard: Moss. Nobody knows what colour her hair is under the green.
- Seriously Scruffy: Hex spends a lot of time in the garden, and couldn't care less about their appearance.
- Chaotic Neutral: Hex is type 4.
- Aerith and Bob: Hex, Brack, Saiph, Pyrope... and Cicely.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Moss is only called by her surname, though her first and middle are known. (It's Dr. Enna Fin Moss.) Also a Meaningful Name, given that before she was a rocket scientist she studied mosses and lichens.
