It was just a game. - Alice Kent
Amidst Destruction[1] is an un-published internet novella which was born from the death of a webcomic, Alice Kent's Emerald Nuzlocke. These two are one and the same, and the unfinished Nuzlocke comic became the prologue for Amidst Destruction.
The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic Hoenn region. A meteor shower hit the region, resulting in Everyone Dying. Well, not everyone - the protagonists are a few of the lucky survivors. The story is told from the third person, and focuses around the actions of Ciaran, Alice Kent, her two pokemon (Jack, an Arcanine, and Ashley, a Ninetales), and Magnus Viper.
Unlike most nuzlockes, the story isn't actually based off any of the games. Rather, it is what Onecanofsprite dubbed "A Fake-Story-Locke". Nuzlocke rules and terms still apply, meaning the main character is unable to catch any more then 1 pokemon in an area, and if any of them are 'dead', they're dead for good.
This story provides examples of:
- Badass Longcoat: Ciaran wears one. Unfortunately, the nature doesn't reflect on him.
- Casual Time Travel: Alice has a time travelling pocket watch, and gives it to Ciaran just so he can see why the hooded guy died.
- Everybody's Dead, Dave: You meet a bunch of people in the prologue. They all die and you never see them again, and it's stated that one of the main characters, Ciaran, has spent 3 years living in the aftermath. He only met people on 3 occasions, and 2 of those were hostile.
- For the Evulz: The Wizard sending Alice into his rather saw-like game. Why? He refused to tell her.
- From Bad to Worse: Okay, so half your pokemon are dead, but you won the challenge! You're free now, right? What's that? An apocalyptic meteor strike? DAMN IT!
- Genre Blindness: Yes, Ciaran! Go into the pitch black, massive office block where you SAW a massive shadow move through the building, which could be stalking you!
- Godhood Seeker: Magnus Viper's plan.
- Hardboiled Detective: Ciaran.
- Kick the Dog: Ah yes, the defenseless young school girl who has lost all of her friends and doesn't know why. What better evil to do then send her into the same game?
- Only Sane Man: Why is every single survivor I meet that I DON'T have to kill so paranoid? - Alice Kent
- Sir Not-Appearing-in-This-Trailer: Ciaran, Magnus Viper... Heck, pretty much everyone except Alice Kent don't make an appearance before the drastic change, and characters who never even show up are the ones on the cover.
- Took a Level in Badass: Alice Kent, between the Prologue and the actual story.
