Over the years many musicians have made a collaborative album and/or single together. This is still promoted as a big deal, because many artists are signed to different labels, making it not always easy to do so without contractual breaks.
Since two musicians from different labels appearing on stage together is quite common we only list actual public releases on single, LP or CD here.
- Jon Anderson and Vangelis recorded the studio album The Friends Of Mr. Cairo (1981), which spawned the hit singles Somehow I'll Find My Way Home and State Of Independence.
- Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington recorded the studio album The Great Summit in 1961.
- Björk and Thom Yorke recorded I've Seen It All together.
- David Bowie and Mick Jagger had a 1985 hit single with Dancing In The Street.
- Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue had a hit single with Where The Wild Roses Grow (1995).
- Neneh Cherry and Youssou N' Dour had a hit single with Seven Seconds (1994).
- Eric Clapton and B.B. King recorded the album Riding With The King together.
- Bob Dylan and The Band recorded the album Planet Waves together.
- Guns N' Roses performed together with Alice Cooper on "The Garden" from Use Your Illusion (1991).
- Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson recorded the song To All The Girls I Loved Before in 1984.
- PJ Harvey and Thom Yorke recorded This Mess We're In on Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea.
- Michael Jackson has done this often:
- He and Paul McCartney performed together on Paul's single "Say Say Say" (1981) and Jackson's "The Girl Is Mine" from Thriller (1983).
- He sang a duet with Stevie Wonder on "Just Good Friends" from Bad.
- He and The Notorious B.I.G. performed together on HIStory: Past, Present, and Future -- Book I (1995) during "This Time Around". On that same album "2Bad" is a rap segment with basketball player Shaquille O' Neal and "Scream" a duet with his sister Janet Jackson.
- Jay-Z and Linkin Park in their collaboration mash-up Collision Course.
- Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones recorded an album with the Moroccan folk group The Master Musicians of Jajouka, Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Jajouka, even though his only input was producing it and adding some phasing effects. The Rolling Stones also collaborated with this group on the track "Continental Drift" from Steel Wheels.
- John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Frank Zappa once shared a stage together. Their performance can be heard both on Lennon's "Some Time In New York City" (1973) as well in a more complete and unedited version on Zappa's "Playground Psychotics" (1993).
- Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson recorded Macca's song Say Say Say in 1981 and The Girl Is Mine on Thriller (1982), after which they had a fall-out when Jackson bought the rights to the entire Beatles catalogue in 1985.
- McCartney and Stevie Wonder also recorded the hit single "Ebony and Ivory".
- Freddie Mercury and Spanish opera diva Montserrat Caballé recorded an album together called Barcelona.
- Metallica and Lou Reed recorded the album Lulu together in 2011.
- Nirvana and Meat Puppets recorded three songs together during the MTV Unplugged in New York concert.
- Oomph!:
- In Plastik, Dero Goi duets with Nina Hagen in "Fieber".
- "Brennende Liebe" crosses over Oomph! with the Austrian duo L'Âme Immortelle.
- From GlaubeLiebeTod: the single version of "Die Schlinge" crosses over Oomph! with Apocalyptica, while the single version of "Träumst du?" becomes a duet of Dero Goi and Czech singer Marta Jandová.
- "Land ahead", the English version of "Land im Sicht", includes of Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation as backing vocalist.
- Queen:
- The band and David Bowie had a hit single in 1981 with "Under Pressure".
- Queen also collaborated with Yes's guitarist Steve Howe during the recording of the song "Innuendo", having him provide a Spanish guitar part that was too difficult for Brian May.
- The Rolling Stones and Peter Tosh recorded the 1978 hit single (Walk And) Don't Look Back together.
- Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Fred Waring and his orchestra performed together on a Christmas Album called 12 Songs of Christmas.
- Sinatra also sang a duet with his daughter Nancy on "Somethin' Stupid".
- Velvet Underground and Nico recorded their collaborative debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico together in 1967. Only after that did Nico record her own debut solo album.
- The Three Tenors concerts were heavily promoted at the time because it featured Luciano Pavarotti, José Carreras and Placido Domingo singing together on one stage.
- Sarah Vaughan collaborated with many artists throughout her career, including Michel Legrand, Godley and Creme, Sergio Mendes and Clifford Brown (Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown).
- Tom Waits and Keith Richards have performed together three times on a Waits album, namely Rain Dogs (1985), "That Feel" on Bone Machine (1992) and on Bad As Me (2011).
- Robbie Williams and actress Nicole Kidman once covered "Somethin' Stupid". Their version also hit the charts.
- Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart worked together on the track Willie the Pimp on Zappa's Hot Rats and recorded an entire collaborative album too: Bongo Fury.
- John Zorn has worked together with Mike Patton, Bill Laswell, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Bill Frisell, Eugene Chadbourne, Mr. Bungle, Derek Bailey, Marc Ribot (of Tom Waits fame) and Boredoms. The live album The Stone: Issue Three is an improvisation between Zorn, Lou Reed, and Laurie Anderson.
- Sabaton's frontman Joakim Brodén sang on van Canto's cover of Sabaton's "Primo Victoria". The whole band later showed up for The Teaser of Radio Tapok's cover of "The Attack of the Dead Men", with Joakim joining Oleg in singing the outro.
- The unlikely pairing of Dutch progressive rockers Focus and 60s rocker P. J. Proby produced the album Focus con Proby.
- Starset and Breaking Benjamin came together for "Waiting on the Sky to Change"note in 2022.
- French rock band Ultra Orange and Emmanuelle Seigner collaborated for the album "Ultra Orange & Emmanuelle" in 2007.
