Sean Hughes (1965-2017) was an Irish comedian famous for his work as a stand-up, actor, panel show guest and writer. Born in London to Irish parents, the family returned to Dublin and he spent most of his childhood in Firhouse. Hughes moved to London in his late teens to pursue a career in comedy. He was an early success, winning the Perrier award aged just 25 in 1990 and writing and starring in his sitcom Sean's Show, which debuted in 1992. He was the first captain of Team B on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and also the first of the original captains to leave the show, feeling that it had become stale and he was getting too old. He later commented that he would be disappointed if he was remembered for his role on Buzzcocks and not for Sean's Show. He retreated from standup for a number of years in the late 90s and early 2000s: among many things he worked as an actor, appearing on stage in an adaptation of The Railway Children and on the small screen in The Last Detective. He returned to standup with darker, more challenging material. In 2017, he died age 51 from cirrhosis of the liver. He had a prolific and diverse career: in addition to his standup and acting careers he was at various times a radio DJ, a podcast host, the author of two novels, a playwright and, with Cathal Coughlan and Paul Jarvis, one third of trollish "pop" "music" "group" Bubonique.
