Runic Games was an American game developer based in Seattle. The company was founded in 2008 by, Travis Baldree, Blizzard North co-founders Max and Erich Schaefer, and Peter Hu. The staff was mainly composed of the defunct Flagship Studios, known for developing Hellgate: London.

In 2009, the company released Torchlight, a top-down Action RPG in the vein of Diablo. A sequel, Torchlight II, was released in 2012. During Torchlight II's development, Perfect World Entertainment invested $8.4 million into Runic, acquiring the company. As a result, Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer left, desiring to make games on a smaller scale, ultimately forming Double Damage Games.

In 2017, Runic released released Hob, an Action-Adventure game based on exploration in the style of The Legend of Zelda. This was the last game developed by Runic before their owners, Perfect World Entertainment, closed the studio in November 2017, which also came with large layoffs at another subsidiary, Motiga. Perfect World said this was to reflect the company's focus on "games as a service."
