Mercer Mayer (born December 30, 1943) is an American writer and illustrator of children's books, having produced over 300 titles since 1967. He initially received notice for being one of the first authors to produce a completely wordless picture book, his debut work A Boy, A Dog, and a Frog. His greatest early success was 1968's There's A Nightmare In My Closet, which drew critical disdain for supposed similarities to Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, but was an instant hit with children and parents (Sendak himself loved the book, and he and Mayer remained friends until Sendak's death in 2012).

His two most famous series star the characters Little Critter (a chubby, hairy, 'creature') and Little Monster (a dragon/dinosaur being).
